There are many carbonated skincare products out there—carbonated packs, carbonated serums, and more—and I've introduced quite a few of them before. To begin with, "carbonic acid" here refers to carbon dioxide (CO2) gas. Because CO2 molecules are extremely small, they can penetrate into the skin. This allows blood vessels to dilate, which is expected to promote blood circulation. Another thing—when people think of carbonation, they usually imagine that fizzy, popping sensation, like soda in your mouth. Doesn't that seem kind of acidic to you? There used to be warnings like "don't drink carbonated soda or your teeth will dissolve," though actually drinking carbonated water doesn't dissolve your teeth. However, when carbon dioxide gas is applied to the skin, it does make the skin slightly more acidic. Since skin is healthiest when kept slightly acidic, this is actually beneficial. Various studies have shown that applying CO2 gas increases skin's moisture content. This is why high-concentration carbonation is especially important for people with dry skin. This is likely because increased blood flow promotes skin turnover. Kao Corporation, in particular, has published a lot of research on this topic, showing that increased moisture content also improves the skin's barrier function. Here's great news for those struggling with acne: in 2022, Kao published data suggesting that carbonation may help reduce acne inflammation. While carbonation and acne might not seem related at first, the data shows that applying carbonated skincare products can help acne heal faster. This is thought to be due to improved blood flow enhancing skin metabolism. When we get acne, we tend to reach for all sorts of medications, but it's fascinating that carbonation alone can bring noticeable improvement. In other words, while carbonated skincare has traditionally been recommended mainly for dry skin, this data suggests it may also be worth trying for those dealing with acne. Here's the key point, though: to get these benefits, the product must contain a high concentration of CO2 gas. Many people assume that any product that fizzes or foams contains carbonation, but that's actually a misconception. Because CO2 evaporates so easily, not every fizzy foam product is truly "carbonated." For example, with something like shaving foam, while it may contain a small amount of CO2, in most cases the foaming effect comes primarily from propellant gases used just to create bubbles—not from carbonation itself. These products aren't lying when they call themselves "carbonated," but the benefits I mentioned—increased moisture and acne improvement—only occur with high-concentration carbonation. Products relying mainly on propellant gas for foaming can't be expected to deliver the same results. One product I've used continuously for a long time is the Sofina iP foaming serum. It has long contained high-concentration carbonation (along with some propellant gas), but it's genuinely marketed as a "high-concentration carbonated foam serum," so I highly recommend it. Now, after that long introduction, let me share three of the newest and lesser-known carbonated skincare products. **1. Albion First Essence** This is a foaming serum with a fairly firm, substantial foam texture. As you spread and press the foam into your skin, it transforms into something like a lotion that absorbs in. Even just applying this gives your skin an amazing glow. Of course, it also contains a high concentration of carbonation. Albion is actually one of Kao's brands. Compared to Sofina iP, Albion is positioned more toward anti-aging, and this product features an even more advanced version of Kao's carbonation technology. As I mentioned, carbon dioxide exists in two forms: volatile CO2 and non-volatile HCO3⁻ (bicarbonate ion). Since CO2 evaporates more easily, it tends to escape quickly. What controls this evaporation is actually pH. The more non-volatile HCO3⁻ present, the less CO2 escapes. This product contains ingredients that control pH to maintain higher levels of the non-volatile bicarbonate form, allowing a high concentration of carbonation to be properly delivered into the skin. Previously, the technology focused on making carbonation bubbles smaller. This time, Kao has succeeded in using pH control to keep the carbonate ions in their non-volatile state—a very Kao-like innovation, given their long history of carbonation research. Additionally, this product contains Kao's well-known whitening ingredient, Chamomile ET, as well as an ingredient unique to Albion called "Selencin extract." This extract was patented in 2007 for its ceramide-production-promoting effects. So, Albion combines blood-flow-boosting, high-concentration carbonation technology to increase moisture, the patented Selencin extract to boost ceramide production, and Chamomile ET for whitening effects—making it a true "super serum" that hydrates and brightens at once. It's also convenient to use as a quick daily serum. **2. Ecarte Precious Gel Pack** This is a carbonated pack made by mixing two agents (Agent 1 and Agent 2) in a container before applying it to the skin. There are many types of carbonated packs out there, but often the CO2 fizzes away while mixing, meaning much of it has already evaporated by the time it's applied to the skin. I once researched carbonated packs extensively and found that this brand holds a patent for a technology that forms a film preventing CO2 from evaporating, allowing it to remain in the pack when applied to the skin. Typically, products combine a gel type and a powder type, but this one uses gel plus gel. When mixed, it forms an agar-like texture that sets within about five minutes. During that time, the agar-like film keeps the CO2 trapped, releasing it gradually over about an hour—a truly groundbreaking mechanism. After seeing Kao's research suggesting carbonation might help with acne, I decided to try this product on a breakout, even though I usually avoid using packs when I have acne. I noticed the redness seemed to calm down. Beyond acne, it also dramatically boosts skin moisture, giving your skin a plump, dewy look—perfect before a photoshoot. It's become one of my go-to items, both for boosting radiance and as an emergency remedy for acne. After researching extensively, I found that maintaining CO2 within a gel for over an hour is surprisingly difficult to achieve, which makes this carbonated pack truly exceptional. **3. Meguri Carbonated Mist** This one was actually a gift from a friend who highly recommended it. This product releases CO2 gas directly, combined with a finely misted moisturizing essence (labeled as a "hydration-boosting lotion"), which is sprayed together with the carbonation to enhance skin absorption. Not only is the carbonation highly concentrated, but the moisturizing essence itself is packed with ingredients I love. It contains Vitamin C derivative (magnesium ascorbyl phosphate), Vitamin A derivative (retinyl palmitate), and Vitamin E (tocopherol)—essentially a combination of Vitamins A, C, and E. Combined with the fine carbonated mist that sprays like a gentle shower, this enhances skin absorption even further. Since it doesn't leave your skin wet, you can spray it even over makeup without smudging it. It's great for those mornings when your skin looks a bit dull—spraying this gives an instant brightening effect. I've been using it almost every morning since receiving it as a gift, and it's become one of my favorites. So, what did you think? Carbonation truly has profound and powerful beauty benefits.
