Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Today I'd like to introduce men's skincare, a topic many of you have been requesting for a while.
This channel has a lot of male viewers as well as female ones, and I often get questions like "Can men use the products you recommend?" Of course there is a category called "men's cosmetics," but that doesn't mean men can't use products outside that category. However, since men and women have different skin qualities and environments, men have their own specific skin concerns, and men's cosmetics are designed to address those.
Today I'll first talk about how men's skin differs from women's and what points to be careful about, then introduce recommended items by specific concern. This should be useful not only for men but also for their partners, so please watch until the end.
■ Differences Between Men's and Women's Skin
The biggest difference between men's and women's skin is the amount of sebum. Higher male hormone levels make the sebaceous glands more active, producing more sebum. Before puberty, around elementary school age, boys' and girls' skin isn't very different. But once puberty hits and boys are affected by male hormones, sebum production becomes more active, leading to body odor and oily skin.
The reason men's skin doesn't feel dry even without applying lotion after washing is because of this high sebum production. This might make you think "maybe I don't need to moisturize, just washing my face is enough," but that's actually not a good idea. While men produce more sebum, their skin is said to have a lower capacity to retain moisture. It's unclear whether this is because having more oil means less need to retain water, or whether the lower moisture-retention capacity itself causes more sebum production—but either way, once the sebum is gone, men's skin tends to dry out more rapidly than women's.
So, if you strip away too much sebum because your skin feels oily, your skin will become dry and its barrier function will be damaged. On the other hand, if you don't remove enough sebum, it will clog pores and cause acne. Men's skin is actually quite delicate—without proper skincare, it can alternate between being greasy and dry.
Also, while awareness of sunscreen use has increased among men recently, compared to women, men rarely apply makeup, so the habit of putting something on the face after skincare is less common. This means men's skin is constantly exposed to UV rays, which accelerates photoaging—resulting in more wrinkles, spots, and sagging compared to women of the same age.
To summarize: men's skin produces a lot of sebum but has difficulty retaining moisture, so controlling sebum is important. Also, since men are more exposed to UV rays in daily life, they're more prone to photoaging, so the key is how to recover from that through skincare.
The basics are simple—wash properly, add moisture if you need moisture, add oil if you need oil—but this "obvious care" is actually surprisingly difficult for men's skin.
From here, I'll introduce recommended items by specific concern.
■ For Oily, Shiny Skin
The most common concern among men is oily, shiny skin. Of course, if you have acne, please prioritize acne treatment regardless of gender. Today I'll assume you don't currently have acne.
For those who want to reduce shine or that "inner dry" greasy feeling, sebum control is key. The basic approach is to wash thoroughly with a rich lather, then follow up with lotion to properly hydrate the skin. For this, I recommend "DUO Men's All-in-One Lotion."
This lotion contains ingredients that specifically target shine. It includes a proprietary ingredient called "Androgen 5 Effect." Since male hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands and cause oiliness, this ingredient works in a way that counteracts that hormonal effect to help reduce shine.
The main ingredient is "hydrolyzed soybean extract"—soy contains isoflavones, which are said to help suppress male hormone activity somewhat. It also contains birch extract and ginseng extract, ingredients also used in women's cosmetics to give skin a clear, radiant look. Additionally, since men often have inflammation from UV exposure, it contains anti-inflammatory ingredients like glycyrrhizic acid and centella asiatica extract.
Actually, even oily skin can have inflammation—the redness often seen in shiny, oily-skinned people is like a kind of "sebum sunburn." So the key is to wash thoroughly, add soothing ingredients, and moisturize.
If this lotion alone is enough for you, that's fine, but if you want more moisture, there's also a serum in the same line. People with very oily skin don't necessarily need a 3-step routine (lotion, serum, emulsion/cream), so try using plenty of lotion first. If that feels sufficiently moisturizing, one product is enough. If not, try layering an emulsion on top.
■ For Skin That's Shiny But Not Too Oily, Wanting a Clean Look
Next, for those whose skin is a bit shiny but not extremely oily, and who want their skin to look clean and healthy, I recommend "ORBIS Mr. Essence Lotion." It's a slightly thick, viscous lotion. While the DUO product mentioned earlier focuses on reducing shine, this one aims to transform shine into a healthy glow, making skin look beautiful. Simply removing all shine can make skin look lifeless and dull, so this is designed for men who want their skin to look genuinely healthy and clear.
Men's skin is prone to epidermal damage from UV exposure, which disrupts skin turnover. This leads to rougher skin texture, poor light reflection, and a dull appearance. This lotion contains an ingredient derived from soy that promotes epidermal turnover and helps refine skin texture. It also contains anti-inflammatory glycyrrhizic acid and a generous amount of hyaluronic acid, which delivers moisture deep into skin that has difficulty retaining water, plumping it up from within and creating a clear, radiant look.
If the DUO product is for those with excess oil, this ORBIS product is more of an all-purpose item for normal skin types who want their skin to look beautiful. This line also has an emulsion, but if this lotion alone works well for you, that's sufficient. If you have dryness around the eyes, try adding a small amount of the matching cream from the same line. Start with plenty of water-based hydration and just a little oil.
■ For Sensitive/Dry Skin
Recently, more men have sensitive skin—feeling dry, experiencing stinging after shaving, and finding that oil-controlling products don't work for them. For this type, I recommend "Vitalism Medicated Premium Moist Milk."
This is an emulsion that spreads smoothly with minimal stickiness, containing "heparinoid," an ingredient recommended for sensitive and dry skin. As mentioned, men have lower moisture retention and often experience ongoing inflammation from shaving and UV exposure. Once dryness sets in, it can lead to itching and sensitivity, causing people to scratch their skin. Using oil-stripping products in this state can create a vicious cycle, so it's important to first use products that help retain moisture.
If you experience redness or flakiness after shaving, this emulsion alone—without lotion—can be sufficient. The matching lotion in this line also contains heparinoid, while the emulsion contains the anti-inflammatory glycyrrhizic acid, and the lotion contains tranexamic acid. Tranexamic acid is often associated with whitening effects, but it also helps prevent skin irritation. So if you prefer a light, refreshing texture, go with the lotion; if post-shave stinging is your main concern, the emulsion alone works well.
Once men's skin becomes dry, it can spiral into itching and other inflammatory symptoms. So even if oil-controlling products worked well for you before, if you start experiencing itching, redness, or dryness, it's worth switching to moisture-focused products containing ingredients like heparinoid. This helps restore the oil-moisture balance and strengthen the skin barrier.
■ Summary
As shown by these three skin types, men's skin can be very shiny one day, normal another day, and dry on yet another. Since so many factors are intertwined, it's important to assess your current skin condition and choose skincare that matches it. From there, if you want to add anti-aging care, you can incorporate those ingredients as well.
Men should try to keep their oil and water balance in check. If you have excess oil, it's fine to remove it, but don't forget to add moisture. If your balance gets thrown off from over-removing oil, hold off on oil-controlling products and focus on moisture-drawing ingredients as your base. And since men's skin is constantly exposed to UV-induced inflammation, please make sure to prioritize sun protection.
So, what did you think? What I covered today represents the very basics of men's skincare. Feel free to add to this based on your own needs. The items I introduced today aren't the only options, so if you have other products you'd like me to review, please let me know in the comments.
See you in the next video. Goodbye!
