I am a 28-year-old woman. I have never taken any UV protection measures until now. Recently, my freckles have gotten worse, and a friend pointed out that my skin looks dark, so I started UV protection measures 2-3 months ago. Even for someone like me, is it possible to become as white as my natural limit? Please tell me about the methods and how long it might take. Would it take 2-3 years? I use sunscreen daily, take vitamin C supplements, and moisturize.
It's hard to say definitively. This is because even with normal UV protection and just vitamin C supplementation, if your skin isn't actually that dark right now, it might not take that long. But if you've been very sun-damaged, it will probably take time. Regarding vitamin C supplementation and moisturizing, it seems you're not using whitening products, so I think it would be good to incorporate whitening skincare.
Isn't there any evidence-based research showing that strong stimulation from facial massage can lead to spots and sagging? I understand that pinching the nose too much causes pigmentation, and that pressure on the face isn't good, but what evidence-based papers give doctors this confidence?
Rather than a paper, there's something called a ligament, which connects muscle to muscle. It's known that when this ligament lengthens or stretches, it causes sagging. I can't say exactly how much pressure causes this, but it's known that friction and pressure can cause it. Conversely, it's known that tightening the ligament lifts the skin, as seen with treatments like Thermage. Since Thermage lifts the skin by contracting this ligament, that's essentially the mechanism. I think this is clear enough that it doesn't really need to be formally published as a paper.
I had full-body medical hair removal, but the hair on my face became thicker. I heard there are areas where this can happen - will continuing treatment make the hair thinner in these areas?
This is called "paradoxical hypertrichosis." When using Alexandrite laser hair removal, this paradoxical hypertrichosis tends to occur in certain areas like the jawline, nape of the neck, and back. In such cases, switching to a YAG laser machine will eliminate this paradoxical hypertrichosis. Incidentally, at Omotesando Skin Clinic, patients who experience this switch to YAG laser. Actually, I experienced this myself once - thick hair grew on my back and I was surprised, so I had it treated with YAG laser and now it's smooth.
I have a question about chin hair. I'm 27 years old, and I'm troubled by strong, masculine-looking facial hair rather than fine vellus hair. Even after shaving, within 2 days the hair grows back stiff and noticeable enough that I need to shave again. What could be the cause? Could it be low female hormones? I'm planning to continue with medical hair removal, but I'd also like to do some internal care - are there any supplements you'd recommend?
This could possibly be a condition called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a gynecological condition. If that's the case, treatment would be better, so rather than supplements, I'd recommend seeing a gynecologist first. Please try to visit a gynecologist soon.
I'm an atopic dermatitis patient in my 20s. I'm currently prescribed Locoid and Corectim for my face - when during my daily skincare routine should I apply these topical medications? Should I time them differently from my skincare? Even with my regular doctor, the answers have varied depending on which doctor I see, so I'd like your opinion.
The answer is that either way is fine. That's probably why the answers vary. Whether you do skincare first and then apply the medication, or vice versa, studies show it doesn't matter either way. Personally, I prefer to apply skincare first. It might differ between men and women - especially for women who want to apply toner and other skincare products first. Whether you apply moisturizer after that and then steroid, or apply steroid first and then moisturizer, studies show there's no difference either way. So honestly, either way is fine, and I think it's best to do it in whatever order works for you. This is because topical medications need to be applied daily, so it's better to establish a routine that's easy for you to follow. So basically, either way is fine - please apply it in a way that fits your lifestyle.
I want to whiten not just my face but my whole body too - do you have any recommendations? I'm taking oral supplements and getting glutathione IV drips. Many people think glutathione IV drips will whiten their entire body, but since it's for prevention, it doesn't mean everything will become white. Your body's whiteness is basically determined by your original skin color - areas like your stomach that aren't exposed to sun represent your natural color, and you generally won't become whiter than your natural born whiteness. So I don't think you should be too fixated on that.
I can't decide between SK-II and Floral Drip for fermentation-based toners. Do you have recommendations for which skin concerns match which product? I heard that using the same product for a long time can cause your skin to get used to it - should I switch products periodically?
First, regarding the latter point about skin getting used to products - this is partially correct and partially incorrect. It's not that your skin gets used to it and the product becomes meaningless; rather, when your skin condition improves and stays good, that good condition just becomes your new normal. Both SK-II and Floral Drip use fermentation as a keyword, focusing on skin hydration. SK-II in particular contains SK-II's unique yeast-derived ingredient, and various effects have been discovered, including whitening and giving translucent skin. So SK-II tends to be more for when you also want whitening effects, while Floral Drip has more of a moisturizing image. I'd recommend deciding based on what kind of skin you want to achieve, rather than just skin type. But both are wonderful products - Floral Drip really embodies Japan's natural fermentation technology, and SK-II's Pitera is truly one-of-a-kind. Both are excellent cosmetics.
For spot prevention, I apply Pola's Wrinkle Shot to my nasolabial folds in the morning, and at night I apply SK-II's Wrinkle Deep Retinol White 5 to my crow's feet, nasolabial folds, and pore areas on my cheeks and nose. Should I avoid double-using Wrinkle Shot and Retinol 5 together at night on my nasolabial folds? Also, regarding facial massage, does using a facial fitness device that you hold in your mouth, or a small-face beauty device, cause sagging?
In terms of ingredients, Wrinkle Shot contains Pola's proprietary ingredient called Nihls-One, while the main ingredient in the other product is retinol, so using them together should be fine. Regarding facial muscles, these devices are more about training the orbicularis oris muscle, so I don't think there's an issue, since it's not creating harsh friction.
I get sunburned due to my job. If you have any prevention or countermeasures, I'd like to know. Also, after washing my face, the area around my cheeks and nose bridge sometimes flakes like dry, powdery skin in patches. What could be causing this and how can I solve it?
For prevention, basically applying sunscreen is key. While it won't completely prevent sunburn, taking oral sunscreen supplements alongside can help suppress inflammation after sun exposure. Regarding the flaking around your cheeks and nose after washing, I'd need to see it to know for sure, but proper moisturizing is important. It might also help to do a peel treatment with something like a peeling lotion first, and then moisturize afterward.
I read that the daily recommended intake of vitamin C is 100mg, but many supplements contain 1000-2000mg per dose. Is there a risk of taking too much? Also, isn't it too early to get a flu vaccine now? I heard you got vaccinated recently, doctor.
Yes, vitamin C can't be stored in the body - it gets flushed out through urine. So 1000mg or 2000mg should be fine. Of course, there are cases of excessive intake causing issues, but basically since it gets flushed out through urine, it should be fine. Regarding the flu vaccine, it takes about 2 weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop, so if you're aiming for the flu season peak around January-February, getting vaccinated in early October is typically recommended. The reason early October is often suggested is that many families have students preparing for exams, and exam season peaks around December-January, so many people time it for that period. But if you're not in that situation and want the vaccine to be most effective in February-March instead, getting vaccinated now would be totally fine. It really depends on when you want to protect yourself.
