Doctor, it's incredibly hot.
I thought I say every year that it's hot, but when I looked it up, this year really is hot.
This year is really hot, and I went to Miyako Island, sorry, I'm suddenly bringing this up.
To commemorate the launch of the transparency-supporting candy that Yutaka Tomori seriously developed, I went back to Miyako Island.
You can buy it online, so that's great. This includes a promotion.
Anyway, putting that aside, I went back to Miyako Island. The breeze was nice so it was cool there, but
the next day, I came back to Tokyo, and it was hot.
Even though you came back from Miyako Island?
I came back from Miyako Island to Tokyo, and it was hot. Tokyo is incredibly hot.
People do say Tokyo is hot, don't they. Really.
Isn't this year even more abnormal?
It is abnormal. Since it's hot, I think everyone experiences that feeling of fatigue from the heat,
so we had the Arata Tomori Clinic tell us what to do about it.
Welcome to the clinic. How are you feeling? Something like that. How have you been lately?
Well, let's do this on a self-pay basis.
For example, walking around town during a non-hot season doesn't tire you out much, but
when it's hot, don't you feel more tired doing the same amount of work?
I do get tired, and I'm all soaked with sweat too.
Sweat too, right.
The reason is that it's an SOS from your autonomic nervous system.
An SOS?
That's right. Summer fatigue symptoms come from lethargy leading to not being able to eat properly,
or eating only carbohydrates or only light, cool foods, which makes you more tired.
Of course that's true, but what's being said recently, as I mentioned, is that
the autonomic nervous system is sending out an SOS.
What does the autonomic nervous system do? It regulates body temperature, among other things.
If your body temperature rises too much that's bad, and if it drops too much that's also bad, so
it adapts to the outside temperature and raises or lowers your core body temperature, but
when it's hot, it glitches out. It makes you sweat,
it has to keep the heart pumping, and it overworks trying to do all these things.
On top of that, if you suddenly step into a cold air-conditioned room,
now it has to work to raise your body temperature instead.
When this happens repeatedly, the autonomic nervous system starts to malfunction.
When the autonomic nervous system works extremely hard, reactive oxygen species increase.
And the body itself starts to feel tired, but
another thing is that when the autonomic nervous system is overworked,
to prevent the body's functions from shutting down,
it deliberately sends a command telling the body to stop,
which is thought to be the main cause, according to recent findings.
The autonomic nervous system releases hormones,
keeps the heart beating, moves the internal organs,
and works hard on its own, so when it says "I can't work any harder than this,"
that shows up as fatigue.
If you leave that fatigue unaddressed,
it leads to even more overwork, and you never recover from the tiredness.
Nomura-san, what do you do when you feel tired?
I sleep.
Correct! Some people go get a massage when they're tired,
some go to a sauna,
some listen to relaxing music,
there are options like that, but
the cheapest and
easiest thing to do is sleep.
Summer fatigue comes from autonomic nervous system disruption due to temperature differences,
as well as not being able to eat properly, but
also, in summer, the nights get shorter.
Because daylight hours are longer.
The time you're awake gets longer.
So you tend to become more sleep-deprived than usual.
Because it's hot, you tend to think you'll act once it cools down,
and there are festivals,
summer festivals and events,
summer vacation too,
so there are a lot of events, right?
So you end up staying up late more easily.
That further disrupts the autonomic nervous system.
All of these factors combine to cause summer fatigue.
So first and foremost,
getting proper sleep
becomes extremely important.
How much do you sleep per day?
When it's really short, I only sleep about 4 hours.
Doesn't that tire you out?
I've kind of gotten used to it,
and I think of it as just for now, so I keep doing it.
So when you're young you can push through without sleep, but
once you get into an older generation, that's no longer possible.
Really, it's not possible.
So what I want you to be careful about is,
you think of it as work and feel you have to wake up at 6am on weekdays, but
if on your days off you're so exhausted
that you sleep until noon,
you should consider that your autonomic nervous system is in a very fatigued state,
so I want you to keep in mind how important sleep is,
but it's hot, right?
How do you sleep?
In summer I tend to wear light clothing,
like underwear with a short-sleeve undershirt, and sleep with a blanket over me.
What about the air conditioner?
I have it on.
Do you set it at a certain level?
It's on auto, yes.
Do you turn it off with a timer?
No, I don't.
Well, that's half right and half wrong, maybe.
I see.
First, I want you to keep the air conditioner on.
About 5 degrees Celsius below the outside temperature.
If it's 30 degrees outside, around 25 degrees.
I see.
That's said to be the best setting,
and I want you to keep your head cool.
You shouldn't let your body get cold.
Wearing light clothing isn't good.
If possible, wear long sleeves and long pants.
And while covering yourself with a blanket, run the air conditioner,
so that your head stays a little cool while your body stays warm—
that's said to make it easier to fall into deep sleep.
Also, since the sun rises high during the day and you don't want that to be a problem,
if the air conditioner shuts off, your body then has to work hard again
to try to cool itself down,
so it's better to keep the temperature constant.
While you sleep, keep the air conditioner running continuously,
it's fine to keep your head cool,
but it's important to make sure your body doesn't get cold.
Wearing short sleeves and shorts, your body might feel cold without you realizing it.
So not sleeping that way is better for your body.
In the sense that you can get higher quality sleep for your body,
I think that's better.
I'd like you to be careful about that.
Understood.
And then there's food too, right?
That's right.
When it's hot, you lose your appetite.
Because you lose your appetite,
you end up eating things like cold noodles that are easy to eat,
or cold food in general, and
that becomes a cause of your body getting chilled,
so if possible, try to have something warm at least once a day,
and of course not eating only cold things is a given, but
what do you eat?
When it comes to food, I eat pretty much everything,
I eat soups too, and vegetables too,
so that part is fine for me.
But what I was thinking
is that the way you say "osoumen" sounds so refined.
That's what's on my mind right now.
You call it "osoumen"?
Yes, that's right, it's called "soumen."
I see, that's what that was about.
That's unrelated though.
But in order to avoid getting tired,
eating seasonal foods is a given, but
you know, things like
vegetables.
Getting plenty of nutrients
is of course important too, but
be sure to properly eat
seasonal vegetables and fruits,
but still, you know,
more than food or anything else, it's about sleeping.
That's the most important thing, isn't it.
Really, it's about sleeping.
Also, sweating is very important too.
Sweating lowers your body temperature,
that's a thing, but
these days,
you don't really sweat a lot, do you?
So bathing properly,
singing is also said to be effective,
but practicing sweating
is important,
not by forcing yourself, though,
during hot weather
I'm not saying turn off the air conditioner and force yourself to sweat,
but things like changing from just showering to soaking in the bathtub,
or
exercising
to practice sweating,
using your autonomic nervous system
to a degree that doesn't tire it out,
rather than suddenly
pushing hard,
constantly sweating a bit
to regulate your body temperature
would be good,
I think.
I see.
Feeling tired
is a genuine SOS signal,
so please keep that in mind,
and if you push yourself too hard,
it can actually lead to insomnia,
or you suddenly realize you're exhausted
and end up passing out
like fainting
and falling asleep like that—
that's really bad for your body.
Especially
people in their 40s and 50s
should be careful about this,
and I hope everyone can
get through the summer well.
Please do try this out.
Yes, doctor, thank you very much today.
Thank you.
