Hello everyone. I'm Tchia, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Today I'd like to talk about cleaning tips for the COVID-19 era. While it would be ideal to return to normal life after the state of emergency is lifted, the coronavirus won't simply disappear overnight. We need to continue living with constant vigilance against it. Handwashing and wearing masks are extremely important for prevention, but I'd also like you to keep COVID-19 prevention in mind when cleaning your home. Let me explain the key points. First, the routes of COVID-19 transmission are droplet infection and contact infection. It's quite common for the virus to spread when droplets land on a surface, which is then touched by hand — that's precisely why we're told to wash our hands. With that in mind, please be sure to focus your cleaning on the surfaces you touch with your hands. During the SARS outbreak — caused by a coronavirus similar to the one behind COVID-19 — there was a case in a Hong Kong hotel where cleaning tools used in a SARS patient's room were then used in other rooms, causing the infection to spread further. Improper cleaning can actually scatter viruses, so please be mindful of this. 【Cleaning Tip 1: Thoroughly disinfect surfaces you touch】 Use alcohol, diluted sodium hypochlorite, or hypochlorous acid as your disinfectant. While spraying and wiping is a common approach, when cleaning at home it's best to use disposable paper towels soaked in disinfectant. If you use a cloth, re-soak it in disinfectant frequently to maintain its effectiveness. Using your soaked paper towel or cloth, wipe down surfaces that are frequently touched — especially light switches and door handles. When wiping, avoid scrubbing randomly, as this may spread the virus. Always wipe in one direction (for example, right to left). If a surface is visibly dirty, disinfectant may be less effective. First remove the dirt with disinfectant, then apply a fresh round of disinfectant to complete the disinfection. Tables should also be wiped in a consistent direction across the entire surface, including the edges, since these are areas your hands frequently contact. For chairs, focus on the backrest, as that's where hands most often touch. The underside and legs of chairs rarely come into contact with hands, so they don't need special attention. 【Cleaning Tip 2: Keep the entryway free of dust】 The entryway is where viruses most commonly enter the home. Dust accumulation can trap viruses, keeping them present in that area. Store shoes in the shoe cabinet, vacuum or damp-mop the entryway at least once a day to prevent dust from becoming airborne, and disinfect the area once a day. 【Cleaning Tip 3: Prevent dust buildup inside the home】 Vacuum dust-prone areas thoroughly and use a dry mop (such as a Swiffer-type product) on floors regularly. Be careful when vacuuming — the exhaust from the vacuum can stir up dust, potentially causing you to inhale any viruses it may contain. One area people often overlook is the TV screen. TV screens carry static electricity, which attracts dust — and with it, potentially virus-laden particles. Wipe the screen once a day with a disinfectant-soaked paper towel or cloth. The same applies to computer monitors. Additionally, microwave buttons, intercom handsets, and refrigerator door handles are all surfaces touched by multiple family members, so disinfect them frequently — more than once a day if possible. 【Cleaning Tip 4: Clean the toilet with disposable tools】 It is known that viruses can be shed in urine and feces. Use a disposable toilet brush and flush it away after use. Urine can also splash onto the walls, so wipe the toilet walls with a disinfectant-soaked paper towel or cloth once a day. You only need to wipe within arm's reach, so there's no need to be overly thorough about it. 【Summary】 ・Frequently wipe down surfaces you touch (remove dirt first, then disinfect) ・Prevent dust buildup (dusty areas are where viruses accumulate) ・Wipe statically charged screens such as TVs and monitors thoroughly ・Clean the toilet with disposable tools and disinfect the walls When cleaning, always ventilate the space by opening windows so that dust can escape. Wear a mask to avoid inhaling dust. Since doing all of this alone can be overwhelming, it's a good idea to share the responsibilities with your family — for example, wiping the toilet walls after each use, or self-disinfecting after touching door handles or switches.
