Hey everyone! Are you breathing? This is Tomori Ara.
So, everyone, are you breathing properly? I think many of you would say "of course I am," but recently new data came out showing that breathing—and oxygen—is actually deeply connected to beauty, so I wanted to share it with you.
Just now I asked, "Are you breathing properly? Are you taking in oxygen?" When you breathe and take in oxygen, that oxygen rides on your blood throughout your body and reaches various cells. But here's something I want you to remember, which might seem to contradict what I just said: no matter how deeply you breathe, even if you take a big breath, your blood oxygen concentration actually doesn't change much. Unfortunately.
The reason I say this is because, as you may have seen at a hospital, there's a device called a pulse oximeter that measures blood oxygen concentration. Let me measure mine real quick. Okay, here we go—my blood oxygen level right now is 99%. I'm breathing pretty well! But even if I talk or take deep breaths, the blood oxygen concentration doesn't change that much.
So why did I say oxygen concentration is important? Well, there's this product called IPSA ME that was released in October, I believe. It's a "beauty liquid"—something between a lotion and an emulsion in texture. If you've used IPSA products before, you'll know they have this skin-check device—a skin analyzer of some kind, sorry I don't remember the exact name—but anyway, IPSA has its own skin diagnostic device that checks things like your age, skin moisture level, and elasticity, and then tells you which ME beauty liquid is right for you.
This newly released ME product apparently can now also measure the oxygen level of your skin. I was surprised and thought, wait, that can't be right, because I already knew that blood oxygen concentration stays around 97–99% and doesn't really change. So I thought, IPSA, isn't that an exaggeration? I wondered if skin cell-level oxygen was basically the same for everyone, so I wanted to look into it more, and I contacted them and had them show me their research data.
As expected from IPSA, they've done thorough research. The representative I spoke with confirmed that of course blood oxygen concentration doesn't change easily, but what they focused on wasn't blood oxygen—it was oxygen concentration at the cellular level.
Oxygen is transferred from the blood to the cells. When oxygen is delivered into the cells, it promotes cellular activity. The blood oxygen level I mentioned earlier can be measured with a simple device like the pulse oximeter, but measuring oxygen at the cellular level usually required lab-grade research equipment. I had assumed this kind of measurement wouldn't be available at a regular department store counter, so I was impressed that IPSA introduced a device capable of measuring cellular-level oxygen concentration—and even more so that they had gathered solid data on it.
Of course, IPSA already knew that blood oxygen concentration doesn't vary much—it's generally between 96% and 99% with little individual difference. However, when they measured oxygen levels at the skin cell level, they found individual differences ranging from about 60% to 80%. When they looked at what differentiated the 60% group from the 80% group, they found that people with higher skin oxygen levels also had higher stratum corneum moisture levels and higher elasticity index scores.
So, people with higher skin (cellular) oxygen levels tend to maintain more moisture in the stratum corneum, and that leads to greater skin firmness. This led them to hypothesize that if oxygen could be properly delivered throughout skin cells, it might increase moisture retention in the stratum corneum, strengthen the skin barrier, and improve firmness. Since blood oxygen levels themselves don't change, they focused on how to make better use of oxygen at the cellular level—specifically, by enhancing the function that delivers oxygen into the cells.
In simple terms: blood oxygen levels stay the same, but if the cells' ability to take in that oxygen improves, the cellular oxygen level goes up. There are individual differences in this ability, and the data showed that when oxygen is properly delivered to cells, it promotes cellular maturity, which in turn increases stratum corneum moisture levels—this is what IPSA discovered.
I see—so it really is important not just to breathe well yourself, but for your cells to "breathe" well too. So how did IPSA find a way to help blood oxygen get properly absorbed into skin cells? They researched extracts from the roots and stems of iris family plants, and found that these extracts increased the cells' ability to take in oxygen.
They combined various iris family plant extracts to create something called OXME7β, which appears to be a complex of Blackberry Lily Extract, Cinnamon Bark Extract, and Horse Chestnut Extract. By adding this complex, they were able to enhance the cells' ability to absorb the oxygen carried in the blood.
If you look closely, you might notice that the product I bought has a "7" written on it. I believe the ME line goes up to numbers 7 or 8, with various types available. The system considers whether your skin cell oxygen level is low or high, and whether your sebum production is high or low—essentially whether your skin retains enough moisture—and based on these levels, they told me that product number 7 was right for me.
Since we can't tell on our own whether our oxygen levels are high or low, nor can we easily judge whether our sebum production and moisture levels are adequate, having them properly assess this through consultation and then hand you the exact number (from 1 to 8) that's right for you is amazing, isn't it?
Although it's labeled as a "beauty liquid," it has a texture somewhat like an emulsion, so I think you could use this as a single all-in-one step, or apply it after toner, or apply it directly and follow with a cream—both approaches would work well. It seems especially suited for those "fluctuating skin" days—when the weather goes from warm to suddenly cold and dry—and for times when you want proper moisture without feeling too sticky. Using the ME product number that matches you can help your skin "breathe" all the way through, allowing oxygen to reach every corner of your skin as part of that process.
Oxygen really is so important, isn't it? Of course, it matters that blood circulates throughout the body, but it's equally important that once it arrives, the oxygen in that blood actually gets absorbed into the cells. Especially since we now know from IPSA's data that when oxygen is properly delivered to skin cells, stratum corneum moisture levels increase—so if you're concerned about dryness, using a product like this to address dry skin could be a great option.
