Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Today I'd like to talk about coffee, which many of you love. There was a time when coffee was said to be bad for your health, but now it has become a beverage that I really want you to drink for your health. So I'd like to explain questions like whether it's okay to add lots of milk, or whether you shouldn't add sugar, one by one. Whether you drink coffee every day or not, please watch until the end.
First, do you all really like coffee? I myself drink at least 1-2 cups of coffee every day without fail. Actually, coffee is said to have various healthy effects, and especially for us women, there's data suggesting that drinking about 1-2 cups of coffee may reduce dark spots. Chlorogenic acid, a polyphenol found in coffee, is said to have anti-inflammatory effects that may suppress spot formation. I've previously explained on YouTube about beverages that are effective against spots, so some of you may already know that coffee is actually good for beautiful skin.
Of course it's good for skin, but coffee is also said to have wonderful effects in terms of overall health. Coffee contains a lot of the polyphenol chlorogenic acid I mentioned earlier. When people think of polyphenols, they usually think of red wine, right? Polyphenols make you think of red wine. Drinking 1-2 glasses of red wine a day is said to reduce arteriosclerosis, events called strokes, and cardiovascular events like myocardial infarction. When you line up foods high in polyphenols per 100g, red wine is by far the highest in polyphenol content. But the second highest is coffee. Isn't that surprising? Coffee is the beverage with the second-highest polyphenol content after red wine. By the way, third place is green tea. Green tea is also rich in catechins, and there's data showing that it may suppress stomach cancer in women, for example, so in terms of polyphenols, green tea is also wonderful.
Now, going back to coffee, there's very interesting data showing that consuming a lot of polyphenols lowers mortality risk. This comes from a paper called the Takayama Study. This is based on data accumulated over time from 30,000 people aged 35 and older. People who consumed 952mg or more of polyphenols per day had lower risks of mortality and stroke compared to those who consumed less. 952mg might seem like an odd number, but it's the amount you can get by drinking about 3 cups of coffee a day. People who like coffee probably drink 2-3 cups a day anyway, so it's great news that this can lower mortality risk and events like strokes.
However, when it comes to coffee, caffeine is a bit of a concern, isn't it? In small amounts, caffeine can help wake you up and is good for fat burning, but as you all know, consuming too much isn't good for your body. So how much caffeine should you avoid exceeding per day? There isn't much data in Japan, but overseas guidelines suggest keeping it under 400mg per day. One cup of coffee is typically about 150ml, and it's said to contain about 80mg of caffeine. If it's under 400mg, that means about 5 cups or less shouldn't be a concern regarding caffeine intake. However, this is for adults. For example, pregnant women should keep it under 200mg per day, and for children, it's said that they should stay under 90mg per 30kg of body weight. 30kg is roughly the weight of an upper elementary school student, so for such a child, about 1 cup or less per day would be appropriate. Please keep in mind that these are just guidelines.
Going back to adults, if you want to avoid the negative effects of caffeine while still getting the benefits of polyphenols, drinking about 3 cups of coffee a day seems to be the sweet spot where you avoid caffeine's negatives while gaining polyphenol's positives.
Now, many of you might wonder if it has to be black coffee, or if it's okay to add sugar or milk. Let's start with adding sugar. Interestingly, the way mortality risk decreases with coffee consumption is quite fascinating. If we consider 0 cups as the flat baseline for mortality risk, then it decreases from 1 cup up to about 2-3 cups, and then levels off after that. So mortality risk decreases somewhat, but there isn't much difference between 3 cups and 9-10 cups, which is why it's recommended to stick to about 3 cups. However, if you add sugar, mortality risk actually starts to increase from around the 2nd cup. This is likely because the negative effects of sugar start to outweigh the positive effects of coffee's polyphenols once you exceed 2 cups. So if you're drinking sweetened coffee, it's better to limit it to about 1-2 cups.
By the way, adding milk doesn't seem to make much of a difference, but since some people experience increased absorption of polyphenols with milk, if you're concerned about this, it might be better to switch to soy milk or oat milk. However, here's an important point: coffee creamer isn't milk—it's actually oil. So if you use coffee creamer, it could actually increase your risk of arteriosclerosis. If you're going to add something, use fresh milk, soy milk, or oat milk, and if you want it sweet, limit yourself to about 1-2 cups a day. This way, you can enjoy the benefits of coffee's polyphenols while minimizing other negative effects.
To summarize: if you drink about 3 cups of black coffee a day, it's said to help prevent dark spots, reduce mortality risk, and lower the risk of events like cerebral infarction, myocardial infarction, and other cerebrovascular events. If you really want to add sugar, limit it to about 2 cups a day, and if you add milk, also limit it to about 2 cups a day. This way, you can retain the positive elements of coffee while minimizing the negative effects of milk or sugar. Please use this as a reference.
So, what did you think? I think many of you were wondering whether coffee is good or bad for you, but based on the latest data available now, this is the conclusion. So if you're someone who casually drinks coffee, you can feel reassured drinking about 2-3 cups a day.
Thank you for watching until the end today. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
