Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Today I'd like to talk about "white/gray hair," a topic many of you have requested.
There are many YouTube videos claiming things like "do this and your gray hair will turn black again" or "do this to prevent gray hair." But honestly, eliminating gray hair is extremely difficult. While effective methods are gradually being discovered, unfortunately we still don't have anything that can turn your hair completely black overnight.
This is tied to various regulations. For example, with wrinkles, once the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare allowed cosmetics to claim "wrinkle improvement," a wrinkle-improvement boom followed. However, claims about turning gray hair black are actually not permitted for cosmetic products. So even though various manufacturers are working hard to discover effective ingredients, they can't state on their products that they "prevent" or "improve" gray hair, which is probably why this information hasn't reached many people.
So I'll be covering this topic in two parts. Part 1 will focus on lifestyle habits for preventing gray hair, and Part 2 will cover the latest research on gray hair. In this video, I'll explain how gray hair forms and what lifestyle habits and foods can help prevent it.
【The Mechanism of Gray Hair Formation】
First, let's talk about why gray hair occurs. Many people think it's simply due to aging, but actually there's such a thing as premature gray hair—some young people have a lot of gray hair while others of the same age have none at all. Let me explain the mechanism behind this.
Our hair grows from "hair matrix cells" (the "mother cells" of hair) located at the base of the hair follicle. Scalp hair naturally falls out and is replaced roughly every 3 to 5 years. Does that mean hair never grows back once it falls out? Not at all.
Actually, in the area near the opening of the hair follicle called the "bulge region," there exist "hair follicle stem cells" that create hair. Nearby, there are also "pigment stem cells."
When hair falls out, the follicle contracts. This causes both the hair follicle stem cells and pigment stem cells located in the upper area to move down toward the base of the follicle. The hair follicle stem cells become hair matrix cells and produce new hair, while the pigment stem cells become "pigment cells," which produce melanin—the source of black hair color—and deliver it to the newly grown hair, making it black.
Interestingly, gray hair isn't actually "white"—it's often transparent. This means our hair becomes black because pigment is added to it. The reason some ethnicities have blonde or brown hair instead of black is due to the color of melanin produced by these pigment cells.
So even though hair is still growing, it can become gray due to several possible errors: the pigment stem cells may not descend properly, or melanin may not be properly delivered to the hair. We still don't know exactly which stage the error occurs at, but we do know that some kind of error is definitely happening for hair to turn gray.
Because of this, various research is being conducted on preventing damage to pigment cells and improving the delivery of pigment to hair. However, it's said that lifestyle habits can significantly help with prevention as well.
【About Diet】
First, let's talk about diet. When people think of "blackening hair," they often imagine seaweed or hijiki, and while these aren't bad, the most important nutrient is actually protein. Since hair itself is made of protein, protein is essential, but when it comes to blackening hair, a substance called "tyrosine" is needed. Tyrosine is said to be a raw material for melanin. If protein intake is insufficient, tyrosine becomes deficient too, weakening the pigment cells' ability to produce melanin. So make sure to eat enough protein.
Another important nutrient for incorporating pigment into hair is minerals—especially iron and zinc. These activate melanocytes, which produce melanin, and play a role in transporting melanin to the hair. While minerals are often associated with seaweed, iron can be found in foods like bonito and red meat fish, while zinc is found in liver, cheese, and beef. Seaweed isn't bad, but try to actively consume iron and zinc.
Another important nutrient is vitamin C. Vitamin C has strong antioxidant properties and is effective at removing reactive oxygen species. It's becoming clear that when pigment stem cells transform into pigment cells, having too many reactive oxygen species can hinder this transformation. Therefore, removing reactive oxygen species with vitamin C is considered beneficial. Vitamin C is also needed for skin and blood vessel formation, and since modern people experience a lot of stress, it's important to consistently consume vitamin C.
【About Scalp Environment】
Recent research has also shown that scalp environment is related to gray hair. When there's excess sebum, it oxidizes and causes scalp inflammation. The immune system works to suppress this inflammation, but this can exhaust immune cells and disrupt immune function. This disruption in immune function may also weaken the ability to produce melanin.
While it's well known that maintaining a healthy scalp environment helps prevent hair loss, it's also important for preventing gray hair. While it's important not to leave too much sebum on the scalp, the scalp is also a unique area with low moisture retention capacity. If you have oily skin with lots of sebum, using a shampoo that removes oil is good, but if your scalp is dry and itchy, it's better to use a shampoo that doesn't strip too much oil, or use moisturizing products for the scalp.
Also, for women, hairspray residue, or for men, gel or wax residue left in the hair can worsen not just the hair but the scalp environment too. Removing wax or spray requires strong shampoo, which can further damage the scalp environment.
Here's a trick: normally you use conditioner or treatment after shampooing, but since wax and spray are oil-based, like makeup, oil dissolves oil easily. Conditioners and treatments contain more oil components than shampoo, so apply conditioner or treatment generously before shampooing, brush your hair to coat it with oil, then rinse once to remove the wax or spray. After that, shampoo properly. This way you can remove wax and spray without stripping too much natural oil from your scalp. You don't need to use strong shampoo every day just to remove wax or spray.
【About Scalp Blood Flow】
Finally, scalp blood flow is very important. People often say "massage your scalp," but many find this bothersome. In such cases, brushing is the best option. Brushing gently pulls the hair, improving scalp blood flow without needing a massage, and also removes some dirt from the hair. Nowadays, finger-combing has become popular, reducing the habit of brushing, but I encourage you to make brushing a habit to maintain a healthy scalp environment.
That's it for Part 1 on preventing gray hair—lifestyle habits and nutrients to incorporate. In Part 2, I'll go into detail about how far gray hair research has progressed and what products incorporate these research findings, so please look forward to it.
