Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori, a cosmetic dermatologist. Today, I'm going to share which beautiful skin habits are OK and which are mistakes. Some of the habits you're keeping up in order to achieve whiter/brighter skin actually don't need to be done, while others I really want you to continue doing. Please watch until the end if you'd like.
Let's start with the first one: applying sunscreen 30 minutes before going out. This is said in a lot of places, and I think I mentioned before that this doesn't really matter much. When I said that, many people told me things like "it was said on TV" or "some brand writes that on their packaging," so I asked manufacturers again and reconsidered it myself. Sunscreen works by blocking on the surface, not by penetrating into the skin. So it can provide protection immediately after application. However, some sunscreens are slow to dry and might rub off easily, which is why some manufacturers suggest applying it 15-30 minutes beforehand. But for most sunscreens, going out immediately after applying doesn't reduce their effectiveness. In fact, the longer time passes, the more likely it mixes with sweat or gets rubbed off, so I don't think there's much meaning to waiting. So the important point with sunscreen is applying the appropriate amount—the timing isn't really that relevant.
Second skin habit: drinking lemon water in the morning. Many models and influencers do this—drinking a glass of lemon water first thing in the morning, believing it has a whitening effect. But medically speaking, this doesn't really have much whitening effect. Of course, taking in vitamin C and drinking a glass of water in the morning is good for your overall body condition, but I don't think it has much of a whitening effect. This is because if you just put a lemon slice in water or squeeze about half a lemon, it's hard to get a large amount of vitamin C that way, and lemon water itself doesn't have much whitening effect to expect. So ultimately, it doesn't have to be in the morning—drinking lemon water little by little throughout the day, whether morning, noon, or night, would work just as well as a way to regularly get vitamin C, so it's not meaningless. But I don't think just drinking one glass in the morning adds much benefit to whitening. Of course, if you find it enjoyable, please continue doing it, but if you're doing it out of an obsessive feeling that "I have to," then it doesn't really matter whether you do it or not.
Third habit: using two whitening serums together (double use). This is a habit I really want you to keep up. Whitening cosmetics have various active ingredients, and there are actually many different approaches. For example, there's a signal telling melanocytes (the cells that produce melanin) to produce melanin, then the melanin gradually darkens, then that melanin gets passed to skin cells, and then it undergoes turnover—there are many different mechanisms involved. So there are products that stop inflammation, ones that inhibit melanin production from melanocytes, ones that stop the melanin from darkening, and ones that lighten melanin that has already darkened—they block or promote different things at different stages. Since the mechanisms differ, the approaches differ too. So combining products means you can block melanin production at multiple stages. Of course, using just one whitening skincare product is fine too, but if you think about a multi-angle approach, using two products together isn't a problem. Splitting them between morning and night is one option, but if you don't mind adding an extra step or texture, using both at the same time is fine too. So if you have the means, please try using two.
Fourth habit: doing UV care even indoors. I'm sure those who watch our channel already do this, and it's absolutely correct, so please keep doing it. Since the rainy season is dragging on right now, there are more cloudy days, and you may want to open the curtains and let some light in even indoors. But even on cloudy days indoors, while UVB may not come in as much, UVA—the type of ultraviolet ray that promotes photoaging—does come in. Of course, if we consider sunny days as 100%, cloudy days would be around 60-70%, but that's still a significant amount pouring down. So thinking "I'm indoors, it's cloudy, it's the rainy season" and skipping UV care isn't good. I always say that spots and wrinkles are like a fixed-term savings account—little by little, the "savings" build up every day, and when it matures, spots and wrinkles appear. It would be nice if this were actual savings, but since we don't want spots and wrinkles to show up, please make sure not to increase that "savings" and do proper UV protection even indoors. However, once the sun has set, there's no problem. When I say this, people often ask about evenings or nighttime, but it's only relevant while the sun is out. So once it's night, you don't need sunscreen. Please continue the habit of applying sunscreen 365 days a year—rain, snow, wind, or sunshine—whenever you're near an open window indoors or going outside.
Fifth: if the SPF is high, you can prevent spots and wrinkles. I wanted to mark this as correct, but actually it's more of a caution point—a habit to be careful about. This is because many people only look at SPF when choosing sunscreen. Many people think that if it's SPF50 or 50+, they won't get sunburned. But actually, SPF is an indicator of how much it blocks UVB. Ultraviolet rays include UVA and UVB, and among these, UVA is what causes photoaging—spots, wrinkles, and sagging. Of course, UVB also causes redness on the skin's surface, and continued exposure is known to cause spots too, but most of photoaging comes from UVA. The indicator that blocks UVA is actually called PA. PA values range from 1 to 4+. For example, comparing SPF50 with PA2+ versus SPF30 with PA4+, the latter might actually be more effective at blocking UVA. So between a product with SPF30 and PA4+ versus SPF50 but only PA2+, since SPF is essentially about duration—both 30 and 50 will last about a day if applied properly—I would recommend choosing the one with a higher PA value. Again, this is because photoaging is mainly caused by UVA. So when choosing sunscreen, SPF value is of course important, but please also make sure to choose one with a higher PA value, which ranges from PA1+ to PA4+.
I believe that whitening means bringing out the best transparency for your own skin. Of course, becoming completely white isn't the only wonderful thing—achieving a color that suits your own skin is something everyone aspires to and hopes for. I'm sure you have various habits for that purpose, so if there's something that turned out to be a bit off, I hope you'll reconsider it.
