Hello everyone, this is Tomori Nitta. Today I want to share with you a new serum based on the latest skin research.
The product I'm introducing today is Chanel's "Sérum No. 1 de Chanel." It's part of a new line called "No. 1 Chanel," which includes toner, serum, cream, foundation, and more. I have the 30ml version of the serum here, though a 50ml size is also available.
It's just so cute—simply having it on display lifts your mood. Chanel is known for its black-and-white brand image, but here the red accent really stands out, and just looking at it makes you feel excited.
This "Sérum No. 1 de Chanel" isn't just about appearance—it's grounded in serious research. Chanel focused on "senescence" (cellular aging), a keyword that's currently drawing major attention in aging research worldwide.
Our bodies are made up of about 37 trillion cells. Cells repeatedly divide, grow, and age daily, performing various functions. But when DNA damage occurs during division, cells stop dividing. Cells that stop dividing either undergo apoptosis (natural cell death) or get consumed by immune cells, removing them from the body.
On the other hand, some damaged cells keep proliferating uncontrollably—these become cancer cells. It's been suggested that cellular senescence may act as a brake to prevent this kind of abnormal proliferation, like that seen in cancer cells.
Recent research has found that among cells that stop dividing, some disappear while others remain in place indefinitely. These persistent cells don't die, but instead send signals telling abnormally proliferating cells to stop. This is thought to be an evolutionary mechanism that puts the brakes on abnormal cell division.
However, further research revealed that these cells also emit signals that cause chronic inflammation. As they accumulate, inflammation spreads to surrounding areas, damaging neighboring cells. Like "zombie cells" that won't die and harm those around them—this is what's known as "senescence" or cellular aging.
These "senescent cells" exist not only in older people but in young people too. In youth, however, accumulation is minimal, while it increases with age, potentially affecting various organs.
So what do these cells do specifically in the skin? That's what Chanel's research team investigated. They created cultured skin models representing different stages of cellular senescence and examined the skin's structure. They found that skin showing more visible aging had significantly more senescent cells. This led to broken-down, less functional fibroblasts and thinner epidermis—confirming a loss of elasticity that contributes to wrinkles and sagging.
Senescent cells go through stages: formation, accumulation, and then transmission of signals telling nearby cells to "become zombies too." Since these cells also serve beneficial functions, eliminating them entirely isn't the goal. Instead, Chanel's research team focused on two key points: preventing accumulation and suppressing the spread of these signals to other cells.
Senescent cells are influenced not just by age but also by exposure to stress—things like dryness, air pollution, UV rays, and smoking that directly stress the skin. This means even young people can have high levels of senescent cells if exposed to stress, while older people with fewer senescent cells can maintain youthful-looking skin.
Interestingly, a plant called "Red Camellia," which also grows in Japan, has been found to be free of senescent cells. Camellia, of course, is a symbol closely associated with Chanel's brand. Research revealed that Red Camellia contains concentrated components that prevent the formation of senescent cells.
Chanel cultivates camellias using natural farming methods on vast lands dedicated to this research. Among various camellia species, the petals of "Camellia japonica" contain polyphenols, including anthocyanins, which are believed to contribute to preventing senescent cell formation. Research confirmed that incorporating this Red Camellia plant extract could indeed suppress the accumulation and spread of senescent cells.
This is called "Red Camellia Petal Extract," and it contains protocatechuic acid, a compound with powerful antioxidant properties. Beyond its antioxidant effects, it's said to improve microcirculation—the communication between cells—which helps prevent the initiation of cellular senescence. This extract is a common ingredient across the new "No. 1 de Chanel" line.
In simple terms, this means delaying the onset of cellular senescence. While Chanel is often associated with aesthetics, fragrance, and texture, they've thoroughly researched camellia—their brand symbol—and integrated it with cutting-edge concepts like cellular senescence into their products. That's truly world-class Chanel, and I found it genuinely impressive.
When you use it, a good amount of milky-white, slightly thick serum comes out of the dropper, enough to cover your whole face. It glides smoothly into the skin without any stickiness at all, making it great for those who dislike sticky textures.
Besides the serum, there's also toner, cream, and even foundation and blush in this new line, so feel free to choose whichever products suit your needs.
The name might actually be read in French as "Numéro Un Chanel"—"Numéro" meaning "number" and "Un" meaning "one." Either way, what I wanted to convey today is how amazing this new No. 1 serum in its red packaging truly is.
The packaging is adorable, and just having it on display lifts your spirits, so if you visit a department store, be sure to stop by the Chanel counter and take a look.
Today turned into quite an extensive discussion again, but once more, I was reminded of just how amazing researchers are. On this channel, I dive deep into various brands and the latest serums like this, so please subscribe if you enjoyed this video.
See you in the next video. Goodbye!
