Hello everyone, I'm Arata Tomori. Today, we have Dr. Teriyama, a teeth specialist, joining us. Hello. Dr. Teriyama is actually from the same agency as us. We have an office where doctors, lawyers, dentists, and other professionals gather. Dr. Teriyama also collaborates with us on various projects. I discuss beauty topics, but I have many questions I'd like to ask the specialist dentist about facial sagging and bad breath. Is it okay if I ask you many questions today? That's fine. Well, Doctor, please introduce yourself. I'm Yuko Teriyama, a dentist. I'm a fan of Dr. Tomi's YouTube channel. Thank you very much. So I'm quite nervous today. We're filming here like this. I always watch your broadcasts. Thank you. Please go ahead. What is your specialty within dentistry? Do you know about prosthodontics? My sister... Nami. I hold a position in the Department of Prosthodontics, and she also mentioned prosthodontics. It's about making and fitting dentures and crowns, right? That's right. For areas where teeth are missing, we create dentures, implants, or crowns to place over existing teeth. That's my specialty. However, there's a special area called maxillofacial prosthodontics, where we treat patients who have lost parts of their face. We handle large-scale prosthetic work too. It sounds like head and neck surgery. After head and neck surgery patients have operations, we help with rehabilitation and restore facial appearance using prosthetics and dentures. So beauty is definitely an important element. Exactly. Regular dentists handle dentures and crowns, but when someone has been in an accident causing facial distortion or loss, we work to restore them to their original state, so beauty elements are essential. I've seen you in various books and magazines, so I have many questions. But it's difficult to visit a dentist just for those issues, right? It feels like a high barrier even for me. So today, I'd like to ask Dr. Teriyama about oral aging and facial sagging. Thank you so much for joining us. Well, right away, one of the top complaints on our channel is sagging. I think sagging happens for two reasons: the skin itself ages and stretches, and the skull shrinks with age, causing the skin to sag. Since we can't really do much about bone, we use heat treatments to tighten the skin. Sagging usually starts around here, right? Yes, it's the mouth area. I'm wondering if there's any way dentists can prevent this. Well, the main concern for both adults and children is that not moving the mouth is bad. Rather than consciously moving it, diet is important. Chewing is actually a complex motion. For example, even if you want to bite a cracker, you don't just bite with your front teeth. You have to guard with your lips so it doesn't scatter. Then you crush it into small pieces before swallowing. Lots of different parts move. Muscles atrophy if you don't use them, they become droopy, and the face tends to look blurry. For children, chewing affects growth and development, and there's concern that the jaw won't develop properly. From what I understand, people used to eat harder foods, so their jaws were stronger. So conversely, the jaw was a bit more square. But nowadays, kids eat only soft foods, so their jaws are smaller and they have smaller faces, which sounds good. Is that actually good? Small faces are desirable, but teeth are genetically programmed with a set number. The tooth size is also predetermined. If the jaw bone becomes too small, the teeth won't fit properly, so they become crowded. I see. Many young people worry about their teeth alignment. That's modern life. What about chewing gum? That's good. Gum or the gummies the doctor here makes. Thank you. Those are good. They're made somewhat firm. Having a good chewing sensation is important. A common misconception is that when people want to strengthen their bite, they try to bite down hard on something tough, like dried squid. If your natural teeth are healthy, that's fine, but for people with crowns or older people, teeth can break. Strengthening your bite is actually quite difficult. What would you recommend for chewing? I really recommend gummies. Not gum, but gummies specifically. Gum is fine too, but the good thing about gummies is they break down and disappear. In the prosthodontics field, we actually use gummies to measure patients' chewing force. We can see how fine it breaks down and how long until it disappears. With gum, you can keep chewing, but it maintains the same form. But with gummies, you can see at 30 seconds how much smaller it got, or at one minute. It's easy to tell when you spit it out. Is it better if it breaks down faster? More efficient that way. The key is to be mindful about using your mouth to break things into small pieces. While eating, we don't usually think about making the food finer. Exactly. You often hear the advice to chew thirty times per bite. That's actually based on good reasons. Breaking food down thoroughly improves digestion and absorption, and vigorously using your mouth strengthens muscles. Also, after eating, food particles remain. They do. Most people rush to brush their teeth to clean that up, but rinsing also strengthens muscles. Just doing vigorous rinsing movements activates all the mouth muscles. We close our lips while doing this. Yes. So it's really simple: eat, then rinse. That alone actually strengthens your muscles. When I film videos, if something looks off, I do this. Yes, we all do that. So this actually has purpose? Absolutely. While just puffing out air uses these muscles, rinsing with water requires tongue strength. Water can't reach your teeth without your tongue. Wow! Let's try it. Yeah. That was fast, Doctor! That's cute. Sorry if the sound bothers anyone, but you really use your tongue there. You do. The point is to make more sound when doing it? Exactly. We want the water pressure to clean away debris. With sticky foods like gummies, you have to really apply water pressure. That becomes training too. The key muscle in the mouth area is actually the tongue. The tongue? Yes. The tongue is said to be the secret to longevity. Do you know Kin-san and Gin-san? Yes, those famous centenarian twins. They had no teeth but were able to eat properly at their age. Why? Because their tongues were strong. See the bumpy surface on the roof of your mouth? If you hold food between that and your tongue, you can crush it. Babies eat soft foods that way. Right, because they don't have teeth. Exactly. People with strong tongues can swallow properly. It even helps prevent aspiration pneumonia. My generation is concerned about sagging like this, and when you strengthen these large muscles, the area becomes defined. You really feel your tongue working when you try this. Right. If you want to do tongue exercises, what's the simplest one? That's the simplest. I also use gummies as tongue warm-up. Warm-up. Stick the gummy on your tongue tip and place it on the roof of your mouth for about 10 seconds. You'll notice your tongue root gets really toned. Then start chewing gum. After chewing, do the rinsing motion. This whole sequence is like a tongue warm-up. Deep stuff. People make funny faces and such, right? Yes. That uses facial muscles like the zygomaticus major. But those aren't muscles that get bigger. The tongue is a muscle that gets stronger with training. So start there, and there are other exercises too. Those are more advanced, so try those once you're ready. There are so many exercises, but if you just rest your tongue on the roof of your mouth, you don't think about having a smaller face or less nasolabial folds. If you'd like, I make gummies myself, so those nutritious gummies would be good to eat. That's ideal. It's eye-opening. Instead of thinking "let me do tongue exercises," just doing the basics creates noticeable changes. Once you get used to it, there are many other exercises we can introduce. I see. You said earlier that a strong tongue means longevity. Does a weakening tongue cause other problems? You snore more easily. That's especially true for people with smaller jaws. Right. The tongue has considerable weight, so your mouth falls open. During this dry season, open-mouth breathing means you inhale all sorts of things easily. Various allergens and getting colds more often. You understand these issues too, I'm sure. From a dental perspective, when your mouth is dry, saliva decreases. Then cavities and gum disease worsen. So keeping your mouth closed is actually optimal. Kids often breathe with their mouths open. When sleeping, we try to keep them closed. If you see mouth breathing while sleeping, closing it is better. For children, if their mouths stay open as they grow, they develop duck lips. What? That's a big mouth? Like this. What were duck lips exactly? Cute celebrities sometimes... Actually, never mind. That kind of lip causes mouth breathing and teeth don't close properly during growth. Teeth become misaligned. Lots of problems arise. Young and old alike, a strong tongue is key. Chewing. Rinsing. These lead to longevity, prevent sagging, prevent colds, prevent bad breath, and prevent cavities. Right. I'll start rinsing from today. Do I need to practice duck lips? You don't need duck lips, but I'll check you anyway. Got it. Today, thank you so much. I realized I didn't know much about teeth and head and neck issues. How can I learn more? I'm planning to open my own YouTube channel soon, so I'll discuss these topics in detail there. When is that planned? Still undecided? Yes, I'll do my best. You're also on Instagram, aren't you? Yes. Could you announce it on Instagram then? Also, please come back to my channel sometime. I have many questions for you. Thank you so much. You're welcome.
