Hello everyone, this is Tomomi. Today I want to talk about something a bit scary — the swelling (edema) that we really need to watch out for in autumn.
You might wonder, "What does autumn have to do with swelling?" But actually, did you know that autumn is one of the seasons when swelling occurs most easily throughout the year? If you leave this autumn swelling untreated, it could lead to serious trouble for your skin. Today I'll talk in detail about the swelling we should address in autumn, so please watch until the end.
Let's get started. When we talk about swelling, you might think of things like your legs becoming puffy by evening, or your face being swollen when you wake up in the morning — it happens in various places without us noticing. Swelling might give the impression of "summer," when we drink too much water, but actually autumn is the season when swelling tends to occur most.
So what exactly is swelling? It's a state where excess water accumulates in the body. Why does excess water accumulate? That's related to our blood flow.
In our bodies, blood circulates continuously. Blood rich in nutrients and oxygen is sent out from the heart, delivered to every corner of the body, and then returns to the heart after collecting carbon dioxide and waste products.
More specifically, blood rich in oxygen and nutrients sent from the heart travels through the arteries to capillaries throughout the body. In the capillaries, oxygen and nutrients are delivered to each location, waste products are collected, and the blood returns to the heart via the veins.
When this happens normally, swelling doesn't occur. But for various reasons, this "collection" process can become less efficient, and at that stage, excess water leaks out — this is the cause of swelling. So the key point is: when blood flow becomes poor, swelling occurs.
Now, why is autumn a season prone to swelling? Because there are many factors that worsen blood flow.
The first is the "temperature difference within a single day." Even if it feels hot during the day, it gradually gets chilly, and you might think, "I should have brought a jacket." Also, since it's warm during the day, many places run air conditioning, and places like trains can feel quite cold. When there's a big temperature swing within a day like this, blood flow tends to worsen.
This also disrupts the autonomic nervous system. When the autonomic nervous system is thrown off balance and the sympathetic nervous system becomes dominant, blood vessels farther from the heart narrow, worsening blood flow. This, in turn, makes swelling more likely.
Also, lifestyle habits and clothing choices that carry over from summer are a factor. You might think a single shirt is fine during the warm daytime, but by the time you head home, your body has cooled down, worsening blood flow. Similarly, if the air conditioning that was turned on during the day is still running in the evening, your body can end up unexpectedly cold.
Furthermore, autumn is known as the season of good appetite. With so much delicious food available, it's easy to overeat. Overeating often leads to excessive salt intake, since flavorful food tends to be heavily seasoned. Excess salt causes the body to retain more water, which also contributes to swelling.
In this way, autumn is a season where blood flow quietly worsens without us realizing it, making swelling more likely.
So what's the problem with leaving swelling untreated? It leads to dry skin. Among the things you should avoid for beautiful skin, one is exposure to UV rays (sunburn), another is friction, and another is dryness.
When skin becomes dry, its barrier function weakens, allowing external irritants to enter and causing inflammation. This makes signs of aging such as spots, wrinkles, and sagging more likely to appear. That's why it's best to avoid dry skin as much as possible — but leaving swelling unaddressed leads to dryness.
From here on, not just temperature but also humidity will drop, accelerating dryness. If you leave autumn swelling untreated, not only will your face become puffy, but your skin will also become more prone to dryness. You might not notice it as much on your face since you apply skincare there, but if your legs become swollen and tight, itchiness can occur. This can lead to rashes and further dryness, so it's very important not to leave swelling unaddressed.
So how do you relieve swelling? First, since improving blood flow is key, light exercise is ideal. Try to incorporate walking and other activities to improve blood flow as much as possible.
If walking feels like too much trouble, bending and stretching your legs — especially your ankles — doing squats, or marching in place can also help, using the pumping action of your lower body muscles to improve circulation. For your upper body, since we tend to look at our smartphones a lot, doing shoulder rolls about once an hour and moving your body frequently to improve blood circulation is a good idea.
Also, please make sure to soak in the bathtub during bath time. Not only does it warm you up, but the water pressure also improves blood flow. When you're busy, it's tempting to just take a shower, but make sure to soak in hot water. Adding bath salts or bath milk to moisturize while warming your body is also a good idea.
Additionally, since disruption of the autonomic nervous system worsens blood flow, try to relax as much as possible. Watching YouTube right before bed can be stimulating and disrupt sleep, throwing off your autonomic nervous system, so if possible, just listen to audio and dim the lights before bed to relax. Finding something that relieves your stress and brings you comfort, and reducing stress to balance your autonomic nervous system, is very important.
Especially in autumn, as the nights grow longer, staying up late can easily disrupt your autonomic nervous system. Maintaining a regular lifestyle is also very important as a measure against autumn swelling.
As for food, it's recommended to actively eat foods rich in potassium, which helps eliminate excess water, such as avocado and spinach. Vitamin E is also key, as it promotes the excretion of sodium from the body and improves blood circulation. In fact, avocados also contain a lot of vitamin E. While avocados are available year-round, they're actually in season from summer to autumn, so now is a great time to eat plenty of them. They also contain unsaturated fatty acids, which help improve skin glow and dryness. So even though it might not feel very "autumn-like," I highly recommend incorporating avocado into your diet as a measure against both swelling and dryness.
To summarize: autumn is a season where blood flow tends to worsen, making it genuinely prone to swelling. If left untreated, this leads to dryness, and untreated dryness causes invisible chronic inflammation in the skin, which becomes a cause of aging. I hope you'll make sure not to neglect swelling and instead take proper care of it.
Today I talked about autumn swelling. Since summer was long this year, when it suddenly turns to winter, blood flow may worsen and swelling may become more likely, so I hope this video will be helpful to you. Thank you for watching until the end today. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
