Hello everyone, I'm Toa, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Today I'd like to talk about unwanted hair removal, something many people think about as summer approaches. When we talk about hair removal, there are various options: methods you can do at home, and treatments available at clinics or beauty salons (esthetic salons). At-home methods include tweezers, shavers (razors), and waxing or depilatory creams. 【Tweezers】 Plucking hair with tweezers actually carries some risk. The stimulation from plucking can promote the hair's growth phase, potentially causing hair to grow back faster and more vigorously. 【Shaving (Razor)】 Shaving is generally fine as long as you use a clean razor and moisturize thoroughly afterward. Shaving creates microscopic cuts on the skin's surface, which can lead to dryness, so post-shave moisturizing is essential. However, since shaving only cuts the surface, people with heavy hair growth may need to shave every 2 to 3 days. Additionally, because the razor cuts hair at an angle, the cross-section of the hair becomes visible as it grows back, making it appear thicker visually. Shaving itself does not actually make hair coarser, but it can create the visual impression of increased hair density. 【Wax and Depilatory Creams】 These products can cause allergic reactions in some people. Always perform a patch test before use to ensure safety. 【Folliculitis (Hair Follicle Inflammation)】 With any at-home method—tweezers, razors, depilatory creams, or wax—bacteria can enter the hair follicle after hair removal, causing folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicle). If this occurs, proper medical treatment is required, so please take precautions when performing at-home hair removal. The main drawback of at-home hair removal is that hair grows back quickly, requiring frequent maintenance. If you truly want to eliminate hair growth long-term, medical hair removal (laser hair removal at a clinic) is the best option. 【Home Hair Removal Devices】 While home hair removal devices are available on the market, professional medical-grade laser devices are extremely large—roughly the size of a photocopier—and even those are considered compact by today's standards. It is physically impossible to replicate the output needed for permanent hair removal in a small home device. Furthermore, hair removal is classified as a medical procedure in Japan and must be performed by a licensed medical professional. Home devices likely work through heat or mechanical removal and cannot achieve permanent hair removal. For permanent results, always visit a certified clinic. 【Difference Between Esthetic Salons and Medical Clinics】 Treatments at esthetic salons are categorized as "hair reduction" or "hair removal," not permanent hair removal. Since permanent hair removal is a medical procedure, it cannot legally be performed at esthetic salons. The devices used at esthetic salons operate at a much lower output and can only reduce hair growth for a limited period—not eliminate it permanently. Think of esthetic salon treatments as a longer-lasting version of at-home hair removal. In contrast, medical laser hair removal works by destroying the "hair matrix cells" (the stem cells responsible for hair growth) at the root, permanently preventing hair from regrowing. For true permanent hair removal, always visit a medical clinic. 【Risks of Medical Hair Removal】 Medical hair removal is not without risks. The primary risk is burns. Because the laser output is powerful enough to destroy hair matrix cells, there is a risk of burns if not properly managed. This is why a physician must evaluate each patient and calibrate the appropriate output level. After treatment, mild skin inflammation is expected, and topical medication is typically applied as part of aftercare. 【Underarm Hair Removal and Sweating】 Some people feel they sweat more after underarm hair removal, but this is not caused by the treatment itself. Underarm hair naturally absorbs sweat, acting as a buffer. Once the hair is removed, you simply become more aware of sweat directly on your skin. Removing underarm hair does not increase the amount of sweat produced, nor does it worsen body odor (axillary osmidrosis), so there is no need to worry. 【Areas Suitable for Hair Removal】 Hair removal can be performed on any area of the skin except mucous membranes. This includes the face and sensitive areas such as the VIO (pubic, inner labia, and perianal) zone. However, these areas carry a higher risk of burns, so medical hair removal at a certified clinic is strongly recommended. Personally, I grew up in Okinawa and had very thick hair. The first thing I did after becoming a doctor was get medical laser hair removal. The cost has come down significantly since then, and I believe it's a worthwhile, lifelong investment rather than struggling with daily hair removal. I highly recommend considering medical hair removal. On this channel, I explain beauty and health topics in an easy-to-understand way. Please subscribe if you find the content helpful, and feel free to leave comments with topics you'd like me to cover—I read every single one. See you in the next video!
