Hello everyone, this is Tomoni Nitta. May has arrived, and Golden Week is already here. Time really flies, doesn't it? Many of you started new schools or new jobs in April, so your environment may have changed significantly, and this might be a good moment to take a breather.
Around this time in May, right after Golden Week, it's common for people to suddenly feel down or lose the motivation they used to have, becoming more negative in their outlook. This is what's known as "May sickness" (gogatsu-byo), a seasonal form of low mood.
When people hear "May sickness," they might think it's just laziness or a matter of willpower, but in fact, many people experience it. According to a 2022 survey conducted by the medical information site CareNet, 300 people aged 20 to 59 were asked, "Do you experience feelings of depression in May, similar to May sickness?" 53% answered yes, and about 10% said they experience it every year.
Isn't that a surprising number? People often think May sickness is just something you can overcome with effort or that it's simply a state of mind, but according to this survey, one in two people is prone to these symptoms, and about 10% suffer from this feeling of being down every single year.
Among those who reported experiencing May sickness, the most common symptom—cited by 53.5%, roughly half—was feeling down. The second most common, at 49.7%, was a sense of powerlessness or lethargy. Third was fatigue, at 35.2%. Following that, over 20% reported neck pain and shoulder stiffness—symptoms that can really affect quality of life. About 12% reported panic-like symptoms such as heart palpitations or dizziness, and about 10% experienced physical symptoms like stomachaches or abdominal pain.
In other words, May sickness isn't just about feeling down or lacking motivation—it can also bring on physical symptoms like pain, panic-like sensations, and stomach pain. This is what makes it so concerning.
Because the name "May sickness" sounds mild, people tend to think it's something you can just ignore. But as I mentioned, one in two people experiences it, and it affects not just your mental state but your body as well. If you're someone who's feeling down right now, please know that you are not alone or unusual in any way. That said, it shouldn't be left untreated. Understanding the causes and countermeasures is essential to prevent it from recurring or dragging on.
If you're watching this video and feeling low right now, or if someone around you seems to be struggling, I want you to know this is by no means unusual.
So why does mental instability and various physical symptoms tend to appear in May? This is said to be due to changes in the autonomic nervous system. In the same survey, people cited relationship troubles and stress as major causes.
When we experience stress, our autonomic nervous system becomes imbalanced. The autonomic nervous system consists of the sympathetic nervous system, which causes sweating and increased heart rate, and the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes relaxation by lowering heart rate and blood pressure and dilating blood vessels. Ideally, these two systems work in balance. However, under stress, the body tends to brace itself, causing the sympathetic nervous system—which acts like an accelerator, putting us in a "fighting stance"—to become overly dominant.
Ideally, the parasympathetic nervous system would then kick in afterward to help us relax. But if you're under constant stress, this balance gets disrupted. This applies not only to relationship issues but also to changes you might perceive as positive, like starting to live alone. Even if you consciously feel that something is enjoyable, your body still registers it as stress—whether it's "good stress" or "bad stress," it's still stress as far as your body is concerned. This is why new relationships or a new living situation that you thought would be fun can actually be causing stress to your body and disrupting your autonomic nervous system.
So if you notice yourself feeling down, struggling, unable to sleep, or having stomach pain, recognize that you might be pushing yourself too hard and that your sympathetic nervous system has become too dominant—and it's time to rest.
When it comes to resting, the most important thing is to actually take rest. There are many ways to relieve stress, but the most crucial thing is getting proper sleep. Since the parasympathetic nervous system becomes dominant while we sleep, sleep is incredibly important. Rather than trying to do everything at once, start by simply prioritizing good sleep.
In addition, maintaining a regular lifestyle is important—waking up and going to bed at the same time each day, and eating meals at set times. Even this alone helps regulate the rhythm between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. You don't need to stick to exactly three meals a day, but try to keep consistent meal times.
A balanced diet is also very important. In particular, try to eat foods that promote the production of serotonin, which helps stabilize mood—such as bananas, cucumbers, natto, and dairy products. Try to incorporate a wide variety of these into your diet.
Furthermore, it's known that improving your gut environment can also improve your mood. While dietary fiber often brings to mind vegetables, carbohydrates are actually very important too. Eating rice, potatoes, and beans helps feed your gut bacteria evenly—what's known as "luminacoids"—so make sure to include these as well.
However, if despite all this you still can't sleep or eat properly, it may be time to seek professional help. If these symptoms persist, please remember this is not unusual at all, and don't hesitate to consult a psychosomatic medicine clinic or receive counseling from a professional institution. Getting sleep medication if you can't sleep, for example, and receiving treatment appropriate to your symptoms is also very important.
To sum up: May sickness is not something unusual at all. One in two people may experience it. And it's not a sign of mental weakness—it's a sign that you've been pushing your nervous system too hard. So first, rest well. If resting, eating properly, and maintaining a regular lifestyle don't lead to improvement, please be sure to visit a psychosomatic medicine clinic or receive counseling.
I hope that none of you will think "it's my fault" or "there's something wrong with me" when it comes to May sickness, as that kind of thinking itself can become a source of stress. I sincerely hope that all of you can enjoy your new life happily even after Golden Week ends.
Thank you for watching until the end today. If you enjoyed today's content, please give it a like and leave a comment below—I'd really appreciate it. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
