Hello everyone, I'm Shin Tomori. Today, I'd like to introduce 5 ways to choose cosmetics that you should avoid, so please watch until the end. When I recommend various cosmetics in this video, I make sure to mention which skin types they're suitable for and how to use them properly. However, I understand that many people still struggle to choose from the vast array of cosmetics available. I think it might be easier to remember what NOT to do rather than what you should do. So today, I'd like to talk about what you should avoid when selecting cosmetics.
When choosing skincare products, making the wrong choice can result in products that don't match your skin type. Even if the cosmetic itself is good, it might not work well for you and you might not see good results. So I think choosing the right cosmetics is really important. I hope you'll watch this video to the end.
So, let's get started with the first way you should avoid choosing cosmetics: copying celebrities.
On social media and in magazines, there are often "beauty influencers" or "gurus," and products are often marketed as "recommended by so-and-so." Of course, it's fine to use them as reference. However, if you choose cosmetics just because you want to look like a certain person, you'll never actually become that person.
This is because with cosmetics, especially skincare, skin type is the key factor. Skin type depends on age and also on your inherent constitution. I myself have very oily skin, so products that work for me won't necessarily work for someone with dry skin. Conversely, if a beauty guru has dry skin, I know their products won't work for me either. So suitability varies from person to person.
When you hear a recommendation, think about whether that person mentioned being dry-skinned or oily-skinned, or whether their skin looks naturally strong. That person might be beautiful because of their genetics, or because they're using skincare that matches their skin type. Use recommendations as a reference and factor them into your choices, but don't copy everything 100%. It's wasteful to use something just because someone else uses it. Choose cosmetics based on your own skin type, age, and what kind of skin you want to have.
Next, the second way to avoid: hating specific ingredients.
This is a common mistake. For example, people often ask me, "Should I avoid UV absorbers in sunscreen?" or "Should I avoid preservatives in cosmetics?" or "What about parabens?" They go through ingredients one by one asking if they're dangerous. Of course, some people do have allergies or sensitivities to certain ingredients. This is especially true for people with very sensitive skin. For those people, it makes sense to avoid these ingredients. However, if you've been using products with these ingredients without experiencing any irritation or reactions, you don't need to worry too much.
Some cosmetics are marketed by saying "we removed this harmful ingredient." But I don't think that's necessarily good. Every ingredient has its positive side. For example, UV absorbers are necessary for achieving high SPF values. Without UV absorbers, it's hard to reach high SPF levels, and using only physical blockers can cause white cast. So UV absorbers are necessary for good texture and to prevent white cast while effectively blocking UV rays. However, some people do react to UV absorbers. But for most people, they're fine.
Similarly with parabens, large amounts can cause irritation, and some people react even to small amounts. But if you've been using products with parabens and haven't experienced irritation, you don't need to worry that they'll cause dark spots or wrinkles in the future. If the cosmetics you're currently using don't cause any reactions, the ingredients in them are fine for you. By not avoiding certain ingredients unnecessarily, you'll have a wider range of products to choose from. So try not to avoid specific ingredients.
Third: choosing cheaper products just because they have the same ingredients.
This is very common. You see things like "has the same ingredients as this luxury brand" but costs half the price. Of course, I understand wanting to save money on products you use every day. However, just because two products have the same ingredients doesn't mean they're identical.
For example, SK-II contains Galactomyces ferment filtrate, which SK-II calls "Pitera." But even if another product says it contains Galactomyces ferment filtrate, the way the Galactomyces are cultured—the temperature, the location, the culture medium—creates completely different ferment filtrates. Even if they're both Galactomyces ferment filtrate, they're different.
To put it simply: sea salt from Miyakojima comes as a fine powder, while table salt is regular granular salt. But they taste different and have different textures. Yet they're both salt. Similarly, even if ingredients have the same name, they can be quite different, and their effects can vary.
Companies that conduct serious research invest in research data and safety verification, so higher prices are inevitable. Of course, cheaper products aren't necessarily 100% bad. The point is they're not the same. Research-backed products and copies are different. So if you understand this and still choose a cheaper option, that's fine. But don't choose a cheap knockoff thinking it's the same. That's a bit off the mark.
Fourth: don't over-trust skincare ingredients.
Skincare is fundamentally about prevention. While some improvements can be made—for example, some products can improve existing dark spots—the basic function is to prevent things from getting worse or to suppress future damage. If you have a large dark spot and apply whitening products, it won't disappear. If you already have deep nasolabial folds, they won't suddenly disappear. Dark spots won't fall off, and your jawline won't suddenly become sharp. Those kinds of changes require actual treatment.
So skincare is prevention, not treatment. If you don't keep this in mind, you'll end up endlessly searching for a product that can do something impossible. You'll think "why doesn't this product remove my dark spots" or "why doesn't this product erase my wrinkles," and you'll keep switching products and getting confused.
Skincare is about prevention and maintenance. You can maintain your current state through proper skincare. So you shouldn't over-trust skincare either. You should clearly distinguish between what skincare can do and what requires actual treatment. That said, treatment alone won't work well without good daily skincare, and conversely, skincare alone can't provide treatment. Both are necessary together.
Fifth and finally: if you experience problems, stop using it immediately.
No matter how good a product is, even if I've recommended it on YouTube or it's very famous, if you experience problems when using it, that's evidence it doesn't work for you. Some people say "this is a purging reaction, keep using it and it will improve." That's not true.
There are special ingredients like vitamin A (retinol) where you might experience an adjustment period that eventually subsides. But for most other ingredients, if you experience itching or redness immediately after application, that means the product is irritating your skin. If something feels off, stop using it. That's very important.
I say this repeatedly, but there's no cosmetic that works for everyone. Out of 100 people, some will find it doesn't work for them or causes irritation. No matter how good the ingredients are or how much you like it, if it doesn't work for your skin, stop using it immediately.
To summarize, the five ways to avoid choosing cosmetics are:
First, don't copy celebrities.
Second, don't dislike specific ingredients.
Third, don't assume products are the same just because they have the same ingredients.
Fourth, don't over-trust skincare.
Fifth, if you experience problems, stop using it.
Keeping these five things in mind when choosing cosmetics in the future will serve you well.
