Doctor, we have an incident.
What happened?
An incident. Lately, has anyone heard of "Chappy"? Some people call ChatGPT "Chappy."
Oh, it's ChatGPT? I see, that's definitely Chappy.
Apparently more and more people are asking ChatGPT to diagnose things like their skin condition. I wanted to ask you, from a professional standpoint, what you think about having AI diagnose your personal skin concerns.
Right now there are really many attempts being made everywhere combining AI with skin diagnosis, so I won't flatly deny it. But what scares me a bit is that ChatGPT basically gathers various beauty knowledge from cyberspace. When I type in keywords like "I'm a 47-year-old woman," "I have acne," "I'm also worried about spots," it goes and collects information based on that. Which means, of course some of it will be correct and some will be wrong.
The AI diagnoses that exist in the world actually examine our skin condition more closely, and instead of using data that's just floating around out there, they incorporate it into data that the company itself owns — that's probably what existing companies are doing. But ChatGPT gathers information scattered across this vast online space. Some of it is wrong, some of it is right. I don't think ChatGPT can yet properly sort through and select the right information. But information keeps getting updated version by version, right? So it's not that it's bad, but if people rely on it too much and think "if I just ask it, everything will be fine," then, for example, people like me would become unnecessary.
True, if everything can be understood just from that.
So rather than watching Tomori Ara's long, hard-to-follow videos, people might increasingly think that asking ChatGPT would give them something more tailored to themselves. I'm not just saying this for my own position, but if things go that way, the number of people putting out information would decrease. ChatGPT works by looking at all the information that exists online and suggesting what suits you. But if the overall volume decreases, you might not be able to get accurate information anymore, and you won't even know if what you're getting is actually correct. And you also won't be able to verify whether it's really correct.
I see, that's true. That might not be so different from the old web after all. You can't judge for yourself.
Exactly. So it's not that ChatGPT itself is bad, but I do find the future where it's used too much a little scary.
What kind of use do you think would be good, where people ask it properly and use it well?
The point is not to leave everything up to ChatGPT — it's something you're supposed to use as a tool. So unless you have some baseline knowledge yourself, you won't be able to tell whether it's wrong or not. I think it's important to properly understand your own condition, and to know what you actually want, so that even if ChatGPT tells you something false, you're able to notice that it's false.
It really does lie a lot.
It really does lie a lot.
I use it at work too, and there are quite a few times I think, "isn't this a lie?"
So you shouldn't take everything at face value. Also, in the end there are things you can't know without actually seeing them, and skin is always changing, so after properly understanding your own condition, you ultimately have to be the one to judge what's best. ChatGPT will suggest a few options, but whether those options actually suit you, and which one you finally settle on — that has to be decided by yourself.
By the way, should we try posing some made-up concern to ChatGPT now and see what kind of response comes back?
I don't think I've ever really asked it something like that.
Right, because you can diagnose it yourself.
"I'm a 47-year-old woman. I'm concerned about sagging. I used to struggle with acne. Please recommend a lotion that would suit me."
Okay.
"Please recommend a lotion that would suit me."
Oh, it's thinking, it's thinking. It's searching the web.
"Since you're 47 and starting to worry about sagging, the key points for choosing a lotion would be to focus on firmness, elasticity, high moisture, and softening the texture of the skin. Since you also have a history of acne, we should also consider the possibility of skin irritation and sensitivity along with age-related signs, and choose something gentle..." and it keeps going on and on.
It's surprisingly accurate.
Oh, that's exactly what we were just talking about.
But this is exactly the issue. What ChatGPT is telling me right now is treating the fact that I had acne as meaning I have sensitive skin. But there are two types of acne — the type that occurs with sensitive skin, and the type like mine, caused by excess sebum. I think it's confusing acne inflammation with the inflammation of skin irritation. Now, recommending Elixir for firmness isn't wrong at all. But it also recommended d program. There are three types in the d program line — an aging care line, a high-moisture line, and one for pores and acne-prone skin. If it were me, I wouldn't choose the high-moisture option for acne and pores. But it chose that high-moisture one. And what I think is decisively different is that it recommended a Curél cream. As I always say, Curél is for people with dry, sensitive skin, and I don't have dry, sensitive skin. People with acne generally don't have dry, sensitive skin — they might have oily, sensitive skin, but if you use something like Curél cream, while it's good for people whose skin trouble is based on dryness, it's a bit off for people with acne-prone skin. I think it's mixing up acne inflammation with the inflammation from skin irritation, which is fundamentally based on dryness — that seems to be getting confused here. So while a lot of it is accurate, I'd say about 30% of it is off the mark.
Would the accuracy improve if you input your exact skin condition?
It might also be something you can't really know without an actual image.
But with just that amount of information...
If you go into more detail, like saying "my acne is caused by excess sebum, so this isn't right for me," and go back and forth more, I think the accuracy would improve more and more. But in order to have that back-and-forth, you need some baseline knowledge yourself. So rather than leaving everything up to it, it's good to consult it once you understand skincare to some degree and understand your own skin. But going by what this thing said, I realized, trying it for the first time just now, that it might be a bit off.
The ability to put your own condition into words is necessary.
Of course, going forward, that kind of future is surely coming more and more. But when that happens, if you don't have a foundation of your own, you'll end up being controlled by it, right? That's kind of scary. It's like in sci-fi, where you think you're using the robot but you end up being used by it — because of things like that, knowledge never betrays you. Knowledge is something that can never be taken from you no matter what happens — even if a thief comes, even if there's a fire, whatever happens — so please make an effort to build up your knowledge. And also, this is a bit of a self-serving point too, but if people rely only on ChatGPT, the people who put out information will disappear, and that kind of information will stop appearing on the web — that's something I'm a little worried about.
Didn't you just say something profound there? About knowledge.
Actually, my father always used to tell me that.
Wonderful!
My father always used to say it. So from when I was little, he always told me, "gain knowledge, study."
I see. So that's where you, Tomori Ara, come from.
That's right.
What wonderful parents.
Thank you.
So, with that said, more people are using it these days — it's not bad. It's not bad, but I guess the feeling is, just be careful.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
