Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Today, I'd like to introduce five beauty methods that doctors absolutely do not do.
A while ago, I introduced health methods that doctors don't practice, which received quite a bit of feedback from you. So this time, instead of health methods, I'd like to introduce beauty practices that are said to be good for the skin but that doctors probably wouldn't actually do themselves, so please watch until the end.
There are quite a lot of beauty methods out there, but from a doctor's perspective, I think many of them are questionable. So today, I'd like to introduce some of those.
First, chilling toner to tighten pores. I hear this quite often. People say that applying cold things to your face tightens your pores with a "pop" sound. While it's true that your pores do tighten momentarily, it only lasts for a second. As you can imagine, as soon as you apply cold toner to your skin, it warms up to body temperature or room temperature. So the question is whether doing this serves any purpose, and the answer is not really. Your pores might tighten for a moment, but it doesn't last. The only benefit might be that it feels nice.
However, most cosmetics are designed to be stored at room temperature. The formulation is based on room temperature storage, so cooling them down might compromise their stability, though it won't make them outright bad. I think it's fine to use cold water when you have a sunburn and your face feels hot, but for tightening pores, splashing cold water on your face or using chilled toner doesn't really make sense, so I don't think you need to do it.
Second, drinking hydrogen water. Hydrogen has many forms besides just water. Recently, there's been research showing that inhaling hydrogen has helped with stroke rehabilitation and that in cases of cardiac arrest, using hypothermia in the ICU increases survival rates, and inhaling hydrogen seems to increase survival rates. However, these benefits are based on using medical equipment. For example, with hydrogen water or hydrogen supplements sold on the market, it's unclear how much hydrogen they actually contain, so actively drinking them doesn't seem very meaningful.
Now, is hydrogen bad for your body? No, it's not. I understand that hydrogen helps prevent oxidative damage to the body, but it's not really incorporated into most commercial supplements or drinks. Interestingly, your body can actually produce hydrogen on its own. This happens in your gut through your intestinal microbiome. Certain bacteria produce hydrogen gas, which strengthens your intestinal motility. When produced properly, hydrogen reaches throughout your body and provides antioxidant benefits. So rather than drinking questionable water with unknown hydrogen content, I'd recommend improving your gut environment to increase the bacteria that naturally produce hydrogen.
Third, making your nose taller through massage. This pops up quite often on YouTube. I mention it regularly, but people say their nose got taller from massaging it. But think about it: your nose is made of bone. If massaging could make bones taller, that would mean your skull and facial bones are soft. That doesn't sound right, does it? So no matter how much you massage, bones can't move. You can't make bones concave or taller. Conversely, as you age, your nose naturally widens due to touching and friction. Excessive rubbing can make your nose bigger and irritate the skin, so this beauty method is pointless and actually accelerates nose enlargement. I think you shouldn't believe such incorrect beauty advice.
Fourth, using ultrasound devices at home or at salons. I've made a video saying these are bad. Ultrasound devices work by sending heat deep into the skin to tighten muscles through a tightening mechanism. This is a treatment done at aesthetic dermatology clinics. However, the name has taken on a life of its own, and with no governing laws, aesthetic salons use these devices with outputs that might be quite high, which can cause burns or even cataracts if accidentally applied to the eyes.
With salon treatments, either the output is extremely low and thus ineffective, or if it's at medical-level output, there's a risk of burns and health damage. If the device is applied without proper consideration of facial nerve pathways, the heat can damage the nerve. So there are health risks beyond just burns. When using ultrasound devices, they should be applied by medical professionals like nurses or doctors who understand facial anatomy.
Recently, home-use ultrasound devices have appeared on the market, but honestly, such small, household versions probably don't have very high output. They probably just have a different name and provide some warming effect. Heat itself isn't bad for skin. Applying certain amounts of heat triggers skin remodeling and reconstruction, providing firmness. However, you likely can't get the same medical-level ultrasound effects at home. Such devices can't be miniaturized that way, so I'm sorry, but you should be skeptical of such products. That said, applying heat isn't inherently bad, so I don't think all beauty devices are bad. But companies that use names like "ultrasound" when they're not delivering those effects are questionable.
Fifth and finally, fasting. This is probably controversial. Some might say doctors do practice fasting themselves. But I think there's a difference between fasting and intermittent fasting. Fasting means consuming nothing, not even much water. Intermittent fasting involves consuming water and certain drinks. So some doctors do practice fasting, but the point of intermittent fasting is to rest your digestive system. Modern people eat too much, so resting the stomach and intestines makes sense. You're right that reducing food intake is good.
However, recent research shows that traditional intermittent fasting, which involves consuming only drinks without solid foods, starves your gut bacteria. Gut bacteria feed on dietary fiber, especially the kind that isn't broken down in the stomach or small intestines—these feed the bacteria in your large intestine. Drinks typically lack this fiber. When beneficial bacteria don't receive nutrients for two or three days, they enter starvation mode, producing gases from decay and causing constipation. While your stomach might rest, your gut environment deteriorates, disrupting your autonomic nervous system and causing constipation as a side effect.
So recently, the thinking about fasting has changed. Instead of avoiding solid foods entirely, the new approach keeps calories low but includes food with fermentable fiber that feeds gut bacteria, like smoothies and soups, while avoiding blood sugar-spiking foods. Doctors studying gut health are moving away from traditional fasting. That's why I'm discussing this today.
To summarize, the five beauty methods doctors don't do are: first, splashing cold water or using cold toner thinking it tightens pores—it's not worth doing; second, drinking hydrogen water—you can produce it yourself by improving your gut; third, massaging to make your nose taller—it doesn't work, so stop; fourth, ultrasound devices are medical procedures, so use them only at medical clinics; and fifth, fasting approaches are constantly evolving, so practice fasting in ways that support your gut health.
How was that? This "doctors don't do" series probably reflects what most doctors actually wouldn't do themselves. I hope you'll find this helpful. Thank you for watching until the end. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
