Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori (Yui Tomori). Today I want to talk in depth about inner-dry skin. Actually, there's something people with inner-dry skin need to do to improve their condition, but surprisingly, many people aren't doing it. Today I'll explain this hidden pitfall of inner-dry skin care. People with inner-dry skin must have oily skin as their base - people with dry skin never develop inner-dry skin. This is because having a lot of sebum requires active sebaceous gland function to become oily/greasy, so people with dry skin are simply not inner-dry to begin with. So if you have dry skin, you should just use dry skin care products. However, many people who talk about inner-dry skin suggest that if you thoroughly supply water while reducing oil, that's all you need to do for inner-dry skin. I used to think the same way and practiced this myself, but when I saw people who weren't improving much, I realized there was actually another cause. That cause is inflammation. Actually, people with inner-dry skin have a decline in their barrier function. Let me explain what this means - how does our skin maintain its barrier function? There are two things: pulling in water, and sebum. When these two properly overlap, the barrier function is maintained. But in people with inner-dry skin, while sebum is abundant, the ability to hold water has decreased. So you might think "let's give them something to hold water," but why does this water-holding capacity fail? It's actually because there's inflammation at the base. When inflammation occurs, for example, natural moisturizing factors within the stratum corneum cells stop being produced properly, and the stratum corneum becomes harder to shed due to inflammation. When it becomes harder to shed, cellular metabolism deteriorates. Since cells create intercellular lipids and the aforementioned natural moisturizing factors while undergoing turnover, this turnover process gets disrupted, and on top of that, the stratum corneum cells become thick and hardened. This makes it impossible to maintain moisture, causing water to evaporate more and more. Because of this, the skin produces even more oil. But then this oil oxidizes, causing inflammation, and since there was already inflammation at the base preventing normal turnover, the barrier function declines further, causing more inflammation. This creates an ongoing negative cycle. However, when we do inner-dry skin care, we tend to only focus on removing oil and adding water. Of course, adding water isn't wrong - it's very correct - but this is merely symptomatic treatment. The real cause is the inflammation at the base. So if you don't stop the root inflammation, continuously adding water won't put out the fire, so to speak. Therefore, the most important point is to add ingredients that suppress inflammation while also adding ingredients that draw in water. Until now, people have said things like "add ceramide" or "add hyaluronic acid" or "add heparin," and of course these are all very important. But equally important is adding anti-inflammatory ingredients. When we talk about anti-inflammatory ingredients, these include glycyrrhizic acid, allantoin, niacinamide (which prevents skin roughness by suppressing inflammation), and tranexamic acid. These should be properly formulated along with ingredients like heparin-like substances and ceramide that draw in water - without combining both, inner-dry skin actually won't improve much. So specifically, what kind of products are we talking about? For example, Karte HD's Moist Mist lotion contains heparin-like substances to draw in water, along with dipotassium glycyrrhizate to calm inflammation. Of course this is good for dry skin too, but suppressing this inflammation is also necessary for inner-dry skin. Similarly, there's Curél's Deep Moisture Spray, which contains allantoin, an anti-inflammatory ingredient. Plus it contains pseudo-ceramide, so it strengthens the barrier function while allantoin suppresses the underlying inflammation. So these two products are great not just for dry skin, but also excellent for inner-dry skin. Also, there's Astalift's Medicated Acne Cream which contains niacinamide. Even though it says "acne cream," I think this is really well-suited for inner-dry skin because it contains tranexamic acid. Since tranexamic acid suppresses inflammation, I think this makes a lot of sense. Until now, inner-dry skin advice has really only been about adding water and removing oil, and while this approach does help some people improve, there's always a certain number who don't improve. I believe that's because, as I mentioned, there's inflammation at the base. But if you think about it, there are people who have plenty of sebum but never get dry at all. What's different about these people? It's that they don't have inflammation at the base. In that case, sebum acts as a natural cream, providing radiance, and of course, when there's too much, removing excess sebum is also very important for preventing dryness. But rather than just suppressing sebum, I think how well you suppress the underlying inflammation is very necessary for alleviating inner-dry symptoms. Also, something I wouldn't recommend for people with inner-dry skin is leaving sheet masks on for long periods. Using a sheet mask for 2-3 minutes is fine for inner-dry skin, but if you think "I want to give it plenty of water" and leave the sheet mask on for a long time, it actually causes the barrier function to decline further and triggers inflammation. However, unlike dry skin, this inflammation doesn't show up as redness or itching - rather, it's inflammation that further deteriorates the underlying barrier function, and because of this inflammation, the skin can't retain water properly, causing it to evaporate more and more. As the skin tries to compensate for this, it produces more oil, creating another negative spiral. So for people with inner-dry skin, rather than long sheet mask sessions, I'd recommend focusing first on thoroughly using products that suppress the underlying inflammation. So, how was that? Many people talk about countermeasures for inner-dry skin, but this point about suppressing the underlying inflammation is something I myself hadn't really talked about much before, so this episode was dedicated to thoroughly discussing that topic. If you think you have inner-dry skin, I'd suggest first focusing on suppressing inflammation as your base, then water, and keeping oil to an absolute minimum. I think quite a lot of people struggle with inner-dry skin, so I'd be happy if watching this helps alleviate their inner-dry symptoms even a little. Thank you for watching until the end today. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
