Hello everyone, this is Tomori Ara. Today I want to talk about a question many of you have asked: 'Is it okay to use two serums together?' Since I introduce a lot of different serums, I often get comments like 'Because you introduce so many serums, I want to use all of them,' as well as questions like 'How much is okay to use?' and 'Is it fine to use two serums?' So today I want to properly explain this topic.
To get straight to the conclusion: I think it's fine to use two serums. However, when using two, it matters whether they have the same direction/purpose and how you use them.
For whitening care, there are roughly three steps: stopping the signal that tells the skin to produce melanin, stopping the melanin production itself, and helping excrete melanin that has already formed. Ingredients that suppress the signal to produce melanin include tranexamic acid and Chamomilla ET. For excretion-type ingredients, there's PCA-DPE (or similar) and dexpanthenol. Ingredients that stop melanin production include kojic acid, arbutin, and 4MSK.
It's not that you can't use 4MSK and kojic acid together, but rather than using two ingredients that both suppress melanin production in a similar way, I think it's better to combine ingredients with different functions—like one that suppresses irritation while also suppressing melanin, and another that suppresses melanin production while promoting excretion—even within the same whitening category.
For example, HAKU contains 4MSK and tranexamic acid, so it suppresses the signal to produce melanin and also suppresses melanin production via tranexamic acid. So you might think, 'Let me add dexpanthenol as another serum for the excretion function,' and since dexpanthenol is used by the Pola Orbis Group, you could try Orbis's whitening serum. Thinking this way and using two products together seems like a good approach.
Now, for wrinkle improvement, the main ingredients are niacinamide, retinol, Rice Power No.11, Nyl-1 (Neuroligin), and vitamin derivatives. You could use retinol on specific areas while using a niacinamide serum overall, or use Nyl-1 overall while using Rice Power No.11 on specific areas. Using them this way, the effects differ somewhat, and even though both target wrinkle improvement, what they're targeting is different.
Niacinamide promotes hyaluronic acid production in the epidermis and collagen production in the dermis. Rice Power No.11 acts on the basement membrane and the epidermis-dermis junction, boosting hyaluronic acid in the epidermis and collagen production in the dermis. Nyl-1 suppresses a glycated elastase-type enzyme that forms when expression wrinkles are created. Retinol is said to increase hyaluronic acid in the epidermis and act on fibroblasts to increase type 1, 3, and 7 collagen. Since each has a different approach, if you're going to use two, I think it's good to divide them into 'partial use' and 'overall use.'
Now, what about using three or four serums? That would increase the stimulation on the skin. So if you want to layer three or four products, you should stop using toner, stop using emulsion, use a serum that's very emulsion-like in place of emulsion, or completely eliminate toner and just layer multiple serums after cleansing and finish there. Using more items isn't necessarily better. Toner, serum, emulsion or cream—that's about four items total. It's not impossible to turn all of these into serums, but if you use four items and then add three more serums on top, using seven or eight products total, that defeats the purpose. I think it's better to keep the total to about three or four items combined.
Another common question is whether to split products between morning and night. People often say things like 'use vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night,' but basically, any cosmetic ingredient undergoes repeated-use testing using both morning and night applications, and the formulation that shows the best results from that testing is what gets included in the product. The repeated-use test results from cosmetic companies typically come from data collected over one to three months of morning and night use. This means that when a cosmetic brand wants to achieve its intended effect, using the product consistently morning and night is the key point. So unless a serum specifically states 'for night use only,' using it both morning and night will likely produce visible results faster. Splitting products between morning and night because you have many things you want to use in the morning might be one approach, but I think it makes the effects harder to notice—it's not that there's no effect. If you want to see results quickly, I think it's better to use products properly in the morning as well.
To summarize: using two serums is totally fine. However, in that case, there may be instances where you should remove another item. If you want to use three, four, or five serums, make sure to remove something else. For whitening or wrinkle care, combining multiple products with different functions is more effective, and using them consistently morning and night will help you notice results faster.
So, what did you think? Since there are many great serums out there, I'm sure there are many you want to use. But please choose what suits you without overdoing it, since overdoing it isn't good either. Thank you for watching until the end today. I hope today's video was helpful for you, and if you found it useful, please give it a thumbs up. Please also subscribe to the channel. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
