Hello everyone, this is Tomohada. Today I'm introducing three cleansers that are available at drugstores and are gentle enough for dry skin. Please watch until the end.
If you've tried many cleansers but none have quite worked for you, this video is a must-watch. In the past, I've introduced cleansers by type—cleansing milk, cleansing balm, cleansing oil—but today I'm mixing them together.
When choosing a cleanser, I always emphasize that you should consider not just your skin type but also how heavy your makeup is. Cleansers are meant to remove makeup, so ones with high cleansing power remove makeup thoroughly but tend to be harsher on the skin. On the other hand, gentler cleansers that don't strip away essential facial oils tend to have somewhat lower cleansing power. This basic principle remains the same today.
However, I often get asked, "What exactly counts as heavy or light makeup?" So let me use my makeup today as a benchmark. Today I've drawn my eyebrows, applied a single-color eyeshadow, used a non-waterproof eyeliner, liquid foundation, lipstick, and blush. Consider this "standard, ordinary makeup." Layering multiple eyeshadow colors or applying powder foundation over liquid foundation would count as "heavier makeup."
This time of year, many people experience dryness. I myself tend to have oily skin, but even I feel dryness during this season. So today, I've chosen one cleansing cream, one cleansing oil, and one cleansing balm that can remove standard makeup even for those concerned about dryness. Please use this as a reference.
【1】Minon Milky Cleansing
Minon is famous as a brand for sensitive skin, but surprisingly, I hadn't covered their cleanser before. After trying it, I found it to be really good.
I have oily skin but also struggle with a condition similar to psoriasis, so I've avoided milk cleansers due to concerns about friction. However, before this skin issue appeared, I used to love milk cleansers.
Milk cleansers have oil dispersed within water, and as you blend it with your makeup on your skin, a phenomenon called "phase inversion" occurs—where water and oil swap places—allowing the makeup to lift off. Minon's Milky Cleansing makes this phase inversion very noticeable, and it blended smoothly with makeup without much rubbing.
Its formula centers on ester-based oils and nonionic surfactants, making it suitable for dry or sensitive skin. It also uses a skin-friendly emulsifier. Silicone oils like cyclopentasiloxane are included, giving it good spreadability without stickiness.
For moisturizing, it contains not just glycerin but also diglycerin, which feels lighter than glycerin while still absorbing moisture well, leaving skin feeling plump after washing. Diglycerin also has preservative properties, allowing the product to be paraben-free.
Milk cleansers have a reputation for struggling with eye makeup, but in practice, it removed standard makeup without issue. It achieved phase inversion easily without excessive rubbing, and once blended, it rinsed off smoothly. Those with skin conditions like mine should be cautious, but this is a great option for those who want plump-feeling skin afterward and wear standard makeup.
【2】Cow Brand Makeup Remover Oil
This cleansing oil had a tag noting it was suitable for delicate skin. I'd never tried Cow Brand before, but after checking the ingredients, I decided to give it a try.
As an oil cleanser, you apply it to dry skin, gently blend it with makeup, then add water to emulsify and rinse off. It contains ceramide as a moisturizing ingredient, which offers some reassurance even though it's rinsed away.
Its ingredients are similar to Minon's, using ester-based oils like cetyl ethylhexanoate and ethylhexyl palmitate as a base, along with nonionic surfactants. It's also paraben- and alcohol-free.
In use, it blended well with makeup and didn't leave the tight, dry feeling often associated with oil cleansers. This is likely due to its mild surfactants and the ceramide content. It seemed capable of handling slightly heavier makeup than Minon, making it a good choice for those without particularly sensitive skin who wear more makeup, or for those wanting to minimize friction.
【3】MK Cleansing Balm
This is a private-brand product called "MK," jointly developed by Matsumoto Kiyoshi and Cocokara Fine.
Cleansing balms are popular for melting on the skin while thoroughly removing makeup. It comes with a spatula, and the texture felt slightly softer than typical balms.
Cleansing balms are essentially solidified cleansing oil, combining the cleansing power of oil with the melting texture of cream. The ingredients include ester-based oils like ethylhexyl palmitate and nonionic surfactants (such as PEG-20 sorbitan trioleate), similar to Cow Brand's formula.
Solid oils like microcrystalline wax and paraffin are added, making the product solid at room temperature but melting upon contact with body heat, allowing it to blend with makeup. While balms have a reputation for over-cleansing, this one uses mild surfactants and a balanced oil formulation for a smooth, melting texture.
Even with similar ingredient bases, the "melting sensation" varies by brand due to differences in technique and formulation ratios. If you've felt residue with balms before, trying different brands may help you find one that suits you.
【Summary】
All three products are based on ester oils and nonionic surfactants, making them suitable for dry skin. The oil and balm types can handle heavier makeup—choose the oil if you prefer not to rub, or the balm if a little rubbing is fine. For standard makeup with the gentlest option, Minon is the way to go.
Choose based on the texture you prefer and how heavy your makeup typically is.
How did you find this video? Cleansers are one of the more accessible skincare items to try, so I hope you experiment and find the one that suits you best.
