Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori.
It's still cold these days, and it's really the dry season, isn't it? When your skin is dry, washing your face somehow starts to feel a bit scary. But if you skip washing your face just because it's dry, something called "sebum degeneration" can make your skin look sallow, so you really should wash your skin to some extent. That said, I know some of you are still worried about dryness, so today I want to introduce winter's top-tier face washes by skin type, so please watch until the end.
Now, let's get right into winter face washing. As I mentioned at the beginning, there was a time when "water-only face washing" became popular, based on the idea that if your skin is dry, you don't need to wash your face in the morning. I've actually made a video before about whether that's good or bad, so please check that out for more details. It's said that the amount of degenerated sebum increases both before you sleep and when you wake up. If you consider the amount of sebum on your skin when you wake up as 100, washing with just water apparently only removes about 20% of it. That means about 80% of that degenerated sebum remains on your skin.
This degenerated sebum actually causes tiny, invisible inflammation. That in turn lowers your skin's barrier function, leading to more dryness — it's a vicious cycle. To remove this degenerated sebum, you need to wash it away with a cleanser. But if the cleanser contains a certain amount of surfactant, it will also strip away the sebum film that keeps your skin moisturized, causing dryness again. I think a lot of people have been lost, wondering what on earth they should wash their face with.
If you're so dry that you really don't want to wash your face today, I think using just water is fine. But if you keep that up, it will accumulate, so my view is that you should occasionally use a gentle cleanser that's safe even for dry skin.
As for what kind of cleanser dry-skinned people should use, the general idea has been that a cleanser uses surfactants to lift and remove sebum. But Curél's Moisture Care Foaming Gel Wash is the first carbonated face wash from Curél's facial line. Carbonation actually has a cleansing effect. Normally, surfactants lift and remove sebum from dry skin, but carbonation works similarly, loosening and lifting sebum. If a cleanser used to contain, say, 10 units of surfactant, this can cut that down to less than half. So even people whose skin tends to dry out from cleansing agents can get a cleansing power that's less likely to cause dryness by incorporating carbonation.
Also, carbonation doesn't just lift dirt and sebum — it also improves blood flow in the skin. When skin blood flow improves, your skin's barrier function actually goes up. It removes dirt while not stripping away necessary sebum, because there's almost no surfactant — it's done purely with the power of carbonation. Plus, that carbonation improves blood flow, which boosts barrier function. For people who get extremely dry in the mornings during winter and want to remove degenerated sebum, this is a huge recommendation — I really think there's no reason not to use it.
Since it's from Curél, you can also do ceramide care with it. While washing, it firmly delivers ceramide — pseudo-ceramide, to be precise — which helps regulate barrier function. Compared to a typical cleanser that firmly removes sebum, this one is based on the concept of cleansing with carbonation, so I think it's best suited for people who are extremely dry during this season or who have dry skin in general. If you're so dry in the morning that you don't know what to use, I really recommend trying this Curél Foaming Gel Wash.
Then there are people who aren't exactly dry-skinned, but somehow feel dry during this season, and yet are also concerned about sebum — and if they use a gentle cleanser, they end up breaking out. I think there are quite a few people like that during this time of year. For them, I recommend these. Both are La Roche-Posay cleansers. Why didn't I just pick one? Honestly, this is the one I really wanted to introduce: La Roche-Posay's Effaclar Sobiome Cleanser. The Effaclar series is for people who are sensitive but also concerned about pores or acne. However, this cleanser can actually only be purchased at medical institutions or La Roche-Posay's official online store — it's not sold at variety stores. Thinking that might be a hassle for some people, I also included the Cicaplast Gel Cleanser, which you can buy more easily. I think both are great cleansers for people with inner-dry skin.
That's because La Roche-Posay originally creates products for sensitive skin, and they're very particular about their cleansers too. Of course, they contain a proper amount of surfactant. The main surfactant is sodium laureth sulfate, which does cleanse sebum fairly thoroughly. But it's combined with cocamidopropyl betaine and cocamide MEA, ingredients that prevent over-cleansing and improve the lather quality. So it firmly removes sebum without over-stripping it — though if anything, it leans toward thoroughly removing sebum. And precisely because it removes sebum well, it's packed with emollient ingredients.
First, there's shea butter, and also polyquaternium-11. As you may know, shea butter is an oil. It's somewhat similar to the skin's own oils. So while it washes away excess sebum and grime, it also deposits a nice, clean oil onto the skin. Polyquaternium improves water adhesion, helping to leave moisture on the skin — it's designed so that after washing, water clings nicely to the skin, ensuring moisture is retained as well. It also contains humectant ingredients like mannitol and maltodextrin, which are sugar-based moisturizers. So it firmly cleanses without over-cleansing, while also delivering emollient ingredients to maintain moisture and add a bit of oil back to the skin.
It's also formulated with non-comedogenic testing, so even though it contains shea oil, it's made not to clog pores. So for people who are concerned about pores and want to remove sebum grime, but also have inner-dry skin and want moisture, I think this is a perfect match. As for lather, I always use a foaming net, and it lathers up really nicely. I used to only use products geared toward oily, shiny skin, but as I've gotten older, my skin has become more inner-dry, so I think this washes even skin like mine very gently.
Also, this contains niacinamide, which helps prevent skin roughness, but also has sebum-suppressing properties. People with inner-dry skin tend to have sebum but lack moisture, so this is designed to control sebum while firmly retaining moisture — making it very well-suited for people with inner-dry skin.
Similarly, there's also a cleanser from the Cicaplast line, which is truly my favorite cream line. The cleansing agents aren't drastically different, but this one leans more toward repair-focused moisture, whereas the other one focuses more on water-based moisture. This one in particular contains a good amount of panthenol, so I think it's better suited for people whose barrier function has weakened and who want to repair it. If you're even more inner-dry, this might be the one for you — though it's also only available through the official online store, so it might be worth searching for.
So, as you can see, this really depends on your skin type, but the key point during this season is either being careful about the cleansing agent so your skin doesn't dry out, or — for those prone to oiliness and shine — using a cleanser that firmly cleanses while still maintaining moisture. Removing too much is bad, and not removing enough is also bad, so I hope that especially during this season, you'll use a face wash suited to you in order to keep your skin healthy.
