Hello everyone, I'm Dr. Tomori Nitta, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Today I'd like to talk about mask-related skin problems in summer. We tend to associate skin troubles with winter, but with masks added on top of summer conditions, we really need to adjust our skincare routine according to the season. Let me share some specific tips with you.
First, let's look at the mechanism behind skin problems. As I always say, the three culprits are: sunburn, friction, and dryness. In summer, UV rays are particularly intense. UVA rays shine year-round and cause photoaging, but UVB rays — the ones that cause visible inflammation, redness, and sunburn — increase significantly in summer, making it much easier to get sun damage.
The second factor is dryness. In a normal summer, you wouldn't need to worry too much about dryness unless you have very dry skin. However, wearing a mask puts your skin at risk of what's called "inner dryness" (inner dry). Here's why: your skin has a barrier function that prevents moisture from escaping. But when you wear a mask, the moisture from your breath causes your skin to become soggy, which loosens the barrier. This allows moisture from inside the skin to escape. For those who can compensate with sebum production, the skin may feel oily on the surface but still be dry underneath — that's inner dryness.
The third factor is friction. Wearing a mask constantly creates friction, especially when you talk. As your cheekbones move up and down, the mask rubs against your skin, causing inflammation, which weakens the barrier function and leads to further moisture loss — a vicious cycle.
So your summer skincare needs to address three things: UV protection, moisturizing to combat inner dryness, and minimizing friction.
Please wear sunscreen every day, 365 days a year. Some masks have UV protection, but since a mask doesn't cover your entire face, always apply sunscreen underneath your mask as well.
For skincare, the key during summer mask season is friction-free application combined with high-moisture ingredients. Products that work as an all-in-one — such as all-in-one gels or emulsions — are ideal. Here are a few products I'd like to introduce.
The first is the "Citrana Cica R Foam Facial Wash." This is a foam-type cleanser that comes out as a rich, thick foam. Because you're washing with foam, it minimizes friction on the skin. It also contains "Cica" — an extract from centella asiatica (not the animal!), which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It's great for soothing irritated, mask-stressed skin, and the cleansing ingredients are very gentle, making it suitable for sensitive, reactive skin.
The second is the "Dr. Ci:Labo Medicated AC³ Sensitive EX Cream." Although it's called a cream, I personally use it as an all-in-one product. It has a bouncy, gel-like texture. The key benefit is that it contains five types of ceramides. Ceramides are a critical component of the intercellular lipids in the stratum corneum — the outermost layer of skin — and replenishing them helps reinforce the skin's barrier function. It also contains dipotassium glycyrrhizate, which helps reduce inflammation. It's labeled as a sensitive skin formula and has been allergy-tested (though allergy-tested doesn't guarantee zero reactions), making it a reassuring choice for those with reactive skin.
The third recommendation is not a skincare product but an inner care supplement: "ORBIS Defencera." This comes in a stick form. Earlier I mentioned how important ceramides are for strengthening the skin barrier. This product contains drinkable ceramide — glucosylceramide — which has been recognized by Japan's Food for Specified Health Uses (FOSHU) certification for improving skin moisture levels and barrier function to help with dry skin. Caring for your skin from the inside is just as important as what you apply topically. While inner care for dryness is often associated with winter, it's equally important when dealing with mask-induced inner dryness in summer.
Wearing masks through summer is tough, but with the right approach — consistent UV protection, reinforcing your barrier from both inside and out with ceramides, and keeping your skincare routine friction-free — you can get your skin through it.
