Hello everyone, this is Tomoari Arata. Today I'd like to show you the correct way to use cleansing milk, so please watch until the end.
On this channel, I've shared how to use cleansing oil and cleansing balm. Both cleansing oil and cleansing balm can remove makeup without friction depending on the type of cleanser, and since friction isn't great for the skin, I've recommended oil-based cleansers for those concerned about friction.
In a previous video, I talked about how I may have overemphasized "friction-free" cleansing, and mentioned that "rubbing" and "gently stroking" are different things. Building on that, today I want to introduce cleansing milk.
Cleansing milk is structurally designed so that it doesn't remove makeup unless you massage it in circular motions. Cleansing milks and creams are often water-based with oil mixed in, and since makeup is oil-based, when you apply a water-based cleanser to your skin, it doesn't mix right away. That's why you need to massage it in circles to blend the makeup with the cleansing milk on your skin.
As you mix it, the oil in the cleanser and the oil in the makeup combine, and once the oil content increases enough, a phenomenon called "phase inversion" occurs, where water and oil switch places. This is what allows the makeup to be removed. So cleansing milks and creams require circular massaging to work effectively.
I've always tended to avoid cleansing creams and milks because I was concerned about friction. But this time, based on the idea that "stroking" and "friction" are different, I want to demonstrate the proper way to use cleansing cream or milk if you choose to use it.
Cleansing milks and creams generally have less cleansing power compared to oils and balms. Because of this, while you need to massage them in circles, they tend to be gentler and don't strip away as much of the skin's important natural oils. This makes them a good choice for people with dry skin or those who don't wear heavy makeup.
Some of you might be wondering how light or heavy makeup should be for this to work well, so let me show you today's makeup. I'm wearing sunscreen, liquid foundation plus setting powder, pencil-drawn eyebrows blended with powder and tinted with eyebrow mascara, cream blush, eyeshadow, eyeliner, and lipstick. Some might consider this full makeup, so let me show you how it comes off.
Let's get started. Here's how I look at the start.
Today I'm using Hironmake-up's Amino Moist Moisty Milky Cleansing. This is a cream-type cleanser that undergoes the phase inversion I mentioned earlier.
I'll start with this amount and add more as needed. Ideally, you'd blend it in first before applying, but I'll apply it all over. If it's not enough, spread more evenly so the cream blends in nicely. I'm applying it neatly for the video, but normally it's fine to apply it all over more casually.
After applying a slightly thick layer, start with the sides of the nose, since that area tends to have more oil buildup. You can massage firmly here. Areas like under the nose and around the chin—especially where oil tends to build up from wearing a mask—should be massaged well too.
For areas like under the eyes, be gentle—massage in circles with just enough pressure that the skin doesn't move. I personally have some discoloration under my eyes, so for areas with pigmentation, gentle pressing can also help. Depending on whether you have pigmentation or spots you're concerned about, you can choose to massage in circles or press gently.
When massaging in circles, apply plenty of product and keep the pressure light enough that your skin doesn't move—that's the key. If you press too hard, it becomes friction. As you continue massaging quickly, you'll notice the cream gradually becoming lighter as phase inversion occurs.
For eye makeup, ideally you'd use a point makeup remover first, but today I intentionally skipped that to test how well this cleanser alone could remove it.
The lips aren't an area prone to pigmentation, so if you're wearing heavy lipstick, gently massage it in circles to blend. Do the same along the jawline, and be extra gentle around the eyes since that area is very delicate—never scrub, just wash gently.
I hope this gives you a good sense of the circular massaging technique. If you have pigmentation on your cheeks, be sure to be extra gentle there.
Now let's add water. At this point, you can massage areas like the nose once more if needed. It's also a good idea to check in the mirror for any spots where the cleanser hasn't blended in properly.
Now let's rinse everything off at once, focusing on massaging along the jawline as we rinse.
And there we go—cleansing is complete. Can you see how well it's come off? Even the eyebrows are gone. Ideally, you'd use a point makeup remover for the eyes and lips for a more thorough clean, but since I wanted to test how much circular massaging with just the cleansing milk could achieve, I skipped that step today. Even so, I think it came off quite well.
Many of you have asked how exactly to massage in circles during cleansing, so I wanted to demonstrate it today. The key is to touch your skin smoothly without letting it move.
As I've mentioned before, I recommend choosing your cleanser based on your makeup intensity rather than just your skin type. If your makeup is very heavy, cleansing oils or balms that work without circular massaging are convenient. But if your makeup is lighter and you don't have much dryness or pigmentation concerns, cleansing milk—used the way I demonstrated today—won't cause friction, so it's a safe option.
So it's a good idea to have about two types of cleansers on hand based on your makeup intensity: cleansing milk for light makeup days, and cleansing oil for heavier makeup days. If you find that cleansing oil dries out your skin, you might switch to cleansing milk instead. Having both on hand and choosing based on your makeup intensity or skin condition on any given day is key.
I'll say it again: "rubbing" and "gently stroking" are different. Also, your face has different zones—some areas produce more oil than others. For me, the T-zone has a lot of oil, so I make sure to massage thoroughly there to properly mix and remove the cleanser, makeup, dirt, and oil.
The reason friction is discouraged is that it can cause inflammation, leading to pigmentation, or worsen dryness. But if you don't have much dryness, gently massaging in circles like stroking is not a problem—please keep that in mind.
How was it? I think this completes the series on cleansing oil, balm, and milk. Again, I recommend having about two types of cleansers that match your makeup intensity and skin condition, and using them accordingly.
Thank you so much for watching until the end today. If you haven't subscribed yet, please consider subscribing. I'd also appreciate likes and comments—let me know if today's video was helpful, or if there's something you'd like me to explain further. I'll see you all in the next video. Goodbye!
