Hello everyone, this is Yuri Tomo (Yuri Tomoshin). Are you doing keratin/exfoliation care? When you hear 'exfoliation care,' you probably imagine people who are concerned about acne or pores, but actually, exfoliation care is so important that I'd even say people who want beautiful skin absolutely need to do it. So today I want to talk about why exfoliation care is important, and what types of people need to be careful with it, so if you want beautiful skin, please watch until the end.
When you think of exfoliation care, peeling is probably what comes to mind first. There are various peeling products available today. 'Peel' means to strip away, so it's the image of using acids or chemical agents to slightly dissolve and remove the dead skin cells.
Why is this necessary? Our skin's turnover rate slows down year by year. As it slows down, the stratum corneum (outer skin layer) becomes thicker. When turnover slows and the stratum corneum thickens, cells containing melanin and other substances accumulate there. Normally these would be shed as dead skin, but if they keep accumulating in the stratum corneum, this alone can cause dullness. Also, when the stratum corneum reaches a certain thinness, a signal is sent to the cells in the basal layer. This signal triggers new cell production, which normalizes the turnover process.
By the way, why is turnover necessary for beautiful skin? As new cells are born from the basal layer during turnover and continue to grow, intercellular lipids and ceramides—the moisturizing components of our skin—are produced simultaneously. So when turnover slows down, production of these ceramides and intercellular lipids decreases, leading to dryness. Also, when turnover slows and the stratum corneum accumulates, cells containing melanin, or those discolored by oxidation or glycation, which would normally shed as dead skin, fail to be released, causing dullness.
So in that sense, it's important to do exfoliation care to thin the stratum corneum and keep it at a good thickness. The key point here is that the stratum corneum is bad both when it's too thick and when it's too thin. Maintaining a good condition is extremely important.
So while exfoliation care is very important, it's also very delicate, and depending on the product used, it can have the opposite effect. The peeling methods mentioned earlier use acids—mainly glycolic acid, AHA, or BHA—to dissolve and remove the top layer of the stratum corneum, promoting turnover by adjusting the thickness of the stratum corneum. This works fine for people with oily skin or normal skin, but for people with dry skin, when the layer is removed, moisture inevitably gets stripped away along with it. This makes the stratum corneum thinner, and while the body tries to normalize turnover by producing intercellular lipids to fix the dry skin, production can't keep up precisely because the layer has become thinner, leading to decreased barrier function and worsening dry skin.
So does this mean people with dry skin shouldn't do it at all? Not necessarily. As mentioned, as we age, turnover slows down and the stratum corneum tends to thicken regardless of skin type. Since this causes both dullness and dryness, rather than forcibly stripping or dissolving it, it's important to activate the mechanism that naturally sheds cells once they reach a certain thickness—since cells have that mechanism built in already.
So does this mean these people shouldn't do peeling at all? That's not the case either. As I mentioned, peeling is needed to promote turnover, and thick stratum corneum causes dullness. So people with dry skin who previously couldn't do exfoliation care even though they wanted to—for those people, and for adults wanting to care for enlarged pores, some great products have come out, so I'd like to introduce them.
These are the two products. First is Dr.365's Moist Renewing Lotion. The second is Sofina iP Suikou Peeling Foam Serum.
Neither uses acid to dissolve and strip away the stratum corneum. These are 'peel-free' peeling products. Our skin has a property where, when the stratum corneum thickens to a certain degree, the 'glue' holding the cells together thickens too, and naturally the cells shed and fall away as dead skin. Unfortunately, as we age, the strength to break down this glue weakens, so cells stay stuck together for longer.
Focusing on this point, rather than forcing things apart, a unique peptide works on this adhesive area to loosen the bond, supporting the natural shedding process. This is Dr.365's original Peel Care Peptide. Rather than dissolving the stratum corneum, it supports our skin's natural renewal process, so there's less dryness involved.
What's also interesting is the focus on calcium. Actually, calcium is extremely important for turnover. There's a layer near the stratum corneum called the granular layer, which is said to have a high concentration of calcium. Having plenty of calcium in the granular layer seems to make cells feel they need to grow toward where the calcium is, and research data shows that having sufficient calcium normalizes turnover. So it's very important to properly deliver calcium into the granular layer, and Dr.365 does this.
So on one hand, it creates an indicator for cells to grow toward calcium for turnover, and on the other, it enhances the function of loosening the adhesion within the stratum corneum itself. Rather than forcibly stripping cells away, it enhances our own functions to allow natural, gentle shedding. This results in smooth, refined-textured skin without the dryness. It's great for dry skin types, of course, but I'd also highly recommend this lotion for people with 'inner dry' skin—those who are oily but experience dryness underneath.
The other product is Sofina iP's Suikou Peeling Foam Serum, a carbonic acid peeling product. Similar to Dr.365, but when carbon dioxide enters the skin, it lowers the pH. This activates the enzyme that cuts the 'glue' connecting stratum corneum cells, as mentioned earlier, when the pH drops. While Dr.365 uses a unique peptide to activate this, Sofina iP uses high-concentration carbonic acid to lower the pH and enhance the activity of the enzyme that breaks down the adhesive. Though similar, the approaches are completely different.
High-concentration carbonic acid not only enhances enzyme activity but also improves blood flow, and importantly, suppresses inflammation. Sofina iP's carbonic acid serum is good for people with dry or sensitive skin. Since it does peeling using carbonic acid while incorporating moisturizing ingredients, it allows for exfoliation care alongside hydration. This means people with sensitive or dry skin can use it with peace of mind. These are exactly the people who often struggled with exfoliation care and ended up with dull skin, so I really want them to try this product.
As we head into July and August when UV rays get stronger, we need to cultivate good quality stratum corneum. The stratum corneum serves as our natural sunscreen. Rather than having old, accumulated stratum corneum, having a layer of just the right thickness—not too thick, not too thin—enhances this natural sun protection effect. Of course, some skin types are still suited to the traditional stripping-type peeling, but especially for people prone to weakened barrier function, like those with dry skin, sensitive skin, or inner-dry skin, I really recommend incorporating peel-free peeling products during this season of strong UV rays.
So, what did you think? Today I talked about peel-free peeling, a type of exfoliation care. As I mentioned, nurturing the stratum corneum is very important, so even though exfoliation care might seem like something only for people with visible pores or oily, shiny skin, I hope people who aren't like that will also try peel-free peeling to achieve beautiful skin during this season.
