Hello everyone. I'm Dr. Nitta Tōmori, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Today, I'd like to talk in detail about trending ingredients that can serve as alternatives to retinol, so please watch until the end.
Most of you watching this video are probably already familiar with retinol, but let me give a quick overview. Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A. In terms of how it affects the skin, retinol promotes skin cell turnover. Normally, when skin turnover accelerates, it can actually cause dryness, but the reason accelerated turnover from retinol is beneficial is that it encourages the renewal of healthy cells. While the typical turnover cycle is about 28 days, when this cycle speeds up without retinol, immature skin cells get pushed to the surface, which impairs the skin's barrier function. With retinol, however, cells mature properly even as turnover is promoted, so there is no damage to the skin.
A second benefit is improvement of skin elasticity. The dermis, which governs the skin's resilience, contains a network of collagen and elastin. When this network is intact, the skin stays firm and wrinkle-free. There is an enzyme called matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) that breaks down collagen and elastin, and retinol inhibits the activity of this enzyme, which is why it is effective for skin improvement. Retinol also suppresses sebum production, making it useful in treating acne. I personally incorporate high-potency retinol and other vitamin A derivatives into my own skincare routine for skin improvement and firmness, as I have mentioned repeatedly in my videos.
However, retinol is not without drawbacks. A phenomenon known as the "retinoid reaction" can cause redness and significant skin peeling. This is not an allergic reaction but a response unique to vitamin A. With continued use, the skin builds tolerance and the redness and peeling tend to subside, but for some people the reaction can be quite severe, making retinol difficult to use. While starting at a low concentration generally minimizes the issue, for those who are still apprehensive or who strongly dislike the redness, research into plant-based extracts with effects similar to retinol has been growing.
The most well-known such ingredient is bakuchiol. Bakuchiol is extracted from a plant in the legume family. It is a relatively newly recognized ingredient that gained popularity—particularly in the United States—as a natural alternative to retinol. While there is an abundance of research on retinol, scientific literature on bakuchiol is still limited. The most notable study was published in 2019 in the British Journal of Dermatology. In this study, a U.S. research team compared groups applying retinol and bakuchiol, respectively, and assessed the degree of wrinkle improvement. The results showed that after one month, wrinkle reduction was comparable between the two groups, which sparked a surge in bakuchiol-based cosmetics in the United States.
However, there is an important caveat to this study. Because retinol is photosensitive, it is not recommended for daytime use (if used in the morning, it should be at a very low concentration and paired with adequate sunscreen). The study used 0.5% retinol and bakuchiol over four weeks, but the retinol group applied it only at night, whereas the bakuchiol group applied it twice daily—morning and evening. In other words, bakuchiol was used at twice the frequency of retinol. I do believe bakuchiol has genuine effects, but I think that achieving results comparable to retinol requires a higher concentration of bakuchiol.
One interesting point about bakuchiol: some websites claim it has the same chemical structure as retinol, but that is incorrect. Nevertheless, its mechanisms—such as inhibiting enzymes that degrade collagen and elastin—are very similar to those of retinol, making high-concentration bakuchiol products a worthwhile option for those who are concerned about retinoid reactions.
For those who find it difficult to shop on overseas websites, I also looked into Japanese alternatives. I discovered that a brand many of you are familiar with has been researching a different plant extract that achieves similar results to retinol. That brand is L'OCCITANE.
L'OCCITANE may bring to mind hand cream for many of you, but it is actually a brand deeply committed to research on plant-based oils. What L'OCCITANE has been researching for many years is an extract from a plant called Immortelle. Immortelle extract is used by various brands and is traditionally known for its anti-inflammatory properties, among others. L'OCCITANE, however, has developed a proprietary process in which already-extracted Immortelle extract undergoes a second specialized extraction to obtain the most concentrated form of the ingredient. Since plant cells have rigid cell walls, thoroughly extracting the components from within them is crucial. The result is what the brand calls "Immortelle Core Extract"—an ingredient exclusive to L'OCCITANE.
Research into how this Immortelle Core Extract works on the skin has shown notable effects on type VII collagen, which connects the epidermis to the dermis. Although type VII collagen represents only a small proportion of total collagen, it plays a vital role in anchoring the epidermis to the dermis, and increasing it leads to visibly firmer skin. Immortelle Core Extract has been shown to double the proliferation of type VII collagen. It also promotes collagen production by 1.7 times and stimulates epidermal cell generation by 1.7 times. Electron microscope images have also confirmed the increase in type VII collagen.
As a retinol alternative that is available in Japan and can be used with confidence, I believe Immortelle Core Extract is a very promising option. The product containing this ingredient is the L'OCCITANE Immortelle Divine Intensifying Oil. As it is an oil, personal preferences regarding texture may vary, but I think it is an excellent choice for those who are hesitant about retinol or who have experienced severe retinoid reactions in the past. Personally, when I use retinol aggressively and experience peeling, I find that applying this oil helps calm the peeling while also providing effects similar to retinol—making it a great moisturizer to use alongside retinol.
I personally love retinol and tend to use it intensively, but for those who prefer plant-based alternatives, I encourage you to try products containing the ingredients introduced today.
