Hello everyone, this is Chimori Nitta. Today I'm filming an emergency video. It's October 23rd today, and when I woke up this morning, some really wonderful news came in. What is it, you ask? Actually, from October 14th to 17th, at a place called Iguazu, famous for the Iguazu Falls in Brazil, IFSCC—essentially the 'Olympics of cosmetics'—was held, which takes place once every four years. There, L'Oréal's technology won the Best Award in the Oral Presentation Applied Research category. Wonderful news! This is truly an honor, and I often mention on this YouTube channel when someone wins an IFSCC award, or how researchers aim for this kind of recognition in their research. Now, what's interesting about L'Oréal winning this time is that it's not actually about skincare. L'Oréal, as well as Shiseido, Kao, and many other Japanese brands, have won in the skincare category before, but this time L'Oréal's win wasn't for skincare—it was for makeup. I think that's pretty amazing. It's not that common for makeup products to receive this kind of award, I think. So what was the technology about? Sorry for the long introduction, but in short, it's about foundation—specifically, adding a blue pigment to make the skin look beautiful. To be more precise, the presentation was about achieving a beautifying skin effect by using a blue pigment instead of black pigment. Normally, foundation is made using red, yellow, and black pigments, plus a colorless or transparent pigment. It's not that it starts out as skin-colored—rather, various colors are combined to create the skin tone. You might wonder, 'Black in foundation?' but since human skin is actually a combination of many colors, a bit of black needs to be included. What's amazing this time is that they incorporated blue. Specifically, they used a blue pigment called ultramarine blue, which contains minerals. Now you might wonder, what's the big deal about that—why hadn't blue been used before? The reason is that adding blue tends to make things look dull; if your complexion looks bluish, the tone drops. So blue had been minimized in the past. But this time, by incorporating this ultramarine blue pigment, they created a foundation that looks exactly the same as before—you can't really tell that blue has been added, and the color is no different from a regular foundation—yet when applied to the skin, it actually produces a beautifying effect, giving glow and transparency, which has been clearly demonstrated with data. So why does adding blue make the skin look more beautiful? The key turned out to be near-infrared light. Near-infrared light is essentially red light. I'm filming this in natural light today since it's an emergency video, but sunlight and everyday light generally contain this reflected red light in the near-infrared range. It turns out that this blue pigment, this ultramarine blue, properly reflects the red light in this near-infrared range. The transparency of foundation or skin comes from light entering the skin and then reflecting beautifully—that's what creates transparency and glow. So in short, rather than shining strong direct sunlight, ordinary ambient light is mainly red-toned, and if that red light reflects properly off the surface of the skin instead of penetrating into it, the skin looks beautiful even without any special lighting. Unfortunately, until now, red, yellow, and black pigments have had a hard time reflecting this red light in the near-infrared range. That's why, even though powder could be layered on top to create some diffusion, the foundation itself couldn't reflect this near-infrared red light. So by adding this blue pigment, the skin now looks beautiful in natural light, without needing any special lighting. What product contains this technology? It's Shu Uemura's new foundation, the Unlimited Tsuya Hada Serum Foundation. I actually introduced this product a while back as one of the notable foundations for the second half of 2024, and I talked about this blue pigment then too. But I think what everyone loved about the glow was, besides the blue pigment, the fact that it contains niacinamide. It also contains hyaluronic acid and glycerin, providing a good amount of moisturizing ingredients—about 10%, with maybe half of that being niacinamide, I believe. So I think people had the impression that the glow came from strong serum and moisturizing effects. But this time, at IFSCC, it was proven that—more than the beauty ingredients—it's really this blue pigment that matters. This blue pigment brings out more transparency in the skin than regular pigments and properly reflects red light, making the skin look beautiful, and that itself won the Best Award at this 'cosmetics Olympics.' Pretty amazing, right? Actually, since I decided to film this video right after waking up this morning, I'm wearing this Shu Uemura foundation today. I intentionally didn't turn on any lighting and I'm filming in natural light, so I think you can see this kind of natural glow coming through. When you take it in your hand, it looks like this—even though blue is included, you can't really tell there's any blue in it. But when you spread it out, as a foundation it glides smoothly and doesn't create any unevenness. I think you can see it creates a nice, clean glow like this. By the way, of course pigments like this matter, but color selection is also important for foundation, right? Shu Uemura was originally founded by the famous makeup artist Shu Uemura, so the brand offers a huge variety of shades. Their method of choosing shades is amazing. First, there's the base color—whether it's pink-based or yellow-based—which changes the number; for example, pink base might be 3 or 4. Then there's brightness, based on how light or dark your skin is, ranging from 2 to 9. Next is saturation—I wondered what this meant, but it refers to the intensity of color payoff. The artists have carefully selected whether the color payoff is subtle or vivid, and this is also divided into levels from 2 to 5. I asked Suzuki-san, who always does my makeup, which one would suit me, and we went through the chart together. Since my complexion has a yellowish undertone, I always use pink base, so I chose pink base 4. Then, since my skin is somewhat bright, I went with 7, and since I don't want too vivid a color payoff and prefer something more subtle, I ended up with 472, which is apparently a new shade. There are also standard colors like 574. Essentially, you choose your base color, then decide if you want something brighter or matching your undertone (warm or cool), then whether your complexion leans lighter or more tan, and then saturation, which I felt was about whether you want a natural skin-like finish or more coverage. Being able to select shades in this much detail really shows what an artist-driven brand this is. On top of that, having this blue pigment's excellence properly proven at IFSCC, the 'cosmetics Olympics,' is truly wonderful, I think. There are so many foundations released this season, but I wanted to share that this one is a foundation containing a blue pigment recognized by the world, so I decided to film this emergency video today. If you're interested, please check out Shu Uemura's Unlimited Tsuya Hada Serum Foundation. That's all for today's emergency video. If more interesting news like this comes up, I'll keep filming these emergency videos from time to time, so please subscribe to my channel. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
