Hello everyone, this is Tomo Kanata. Today I want to talk about carbonated gas packs (carbonic acid gas facial packs). Actually, one year ago I made a video on this same channel explaining carbonated gas packs. If you haven't seen it, I'd be happy if you checked it out. At that time, I made two main points. First, there are many different types of carbonated gas packs, and their effects vary greatly depending on the concentration of carbon dioxide gas they contain. Since I hadn't tried every single product, I couldn't say which one was best. Because of this, I mentioned that I personally don't use carbonated gas packs, but instead use a serum with a research-backed high concentration of carbonic acid. Please check out my previous video for more details. A year has passed since then, and on social media, new carbonated gas pack products keep appearing one after another. As a beauty YouTuber, I felt I couldn't pass up the chance to try them, so I decided to study this topic thoroughly again and share what I learned with you. In this video, I'll explain how to identify carbonated gas packs that release a high concentration of beneficial carbon dioxide gas to the skin. If you use carbonated gas packs, or if you're having trouble choosing between different brands, please watch until the end. **How Carbonic Acid Gas Affects the Skin** When carbon dioxide gas is applied to the skin, the negative ions of the gas interact with the positive ions of the skin, which temporarily loosens the skin's barrier function. When the carbon dioxide gas enters the bloodstream, something called the Bohr effect occurs: the oxygen bound to hemoglobin is exchanged for carbon dioxide, so hemoglobin binds with CO2, and the released oxygen enters the cells, activating them. In the case of skin cells, this is thought to promote cell turnover and wound healing—likely through this same cellular activation mechanism. Carbon dioxide gas also has a vasodilating effect, meaning it improves blood circulation. This is why your face can turn slightly red and flushed after using a carbonated pack—the gas widens blood vessels that were constricted, releases oxygen, and that oxygen is taken up by skin cells, activating them. In fact, in medical settings, some doctors use carbonic acid therapy to help heal wounds. This suggests that improved circulation may enhance wound healing and boost skin cell turnover. The brightening and glow effect often reported after using carbonated gas packs is likely due to this combination of cellular activation and improved blood circulation. **The Difference Between Carbon Dioxide Gas and Carbonic Acid** Let me explain what a carbonated gas pack actually is. "Carbon dioxide gas" and "carbonic acid" are actually different things. Carbon dioxide gas is CO2 itself, while carbonic acid is CO2 dissolved in water, with the chemical formula H2CO3. They may seem similar, but there's a crucial difference. Carbon dioxide is very difficult to dissolve in water, so it requires strong pressure to be dissolved. In carbonic acid form, without continuous pressure, the gas quickly escapes as bubbles and evaporates. Carbon dioxide gas, on the other hand, can remain on the skin for a longer period. This doesn't mean carbonic acid is ineffective. The Kao serum I mentioned in my previous video contains a high concentration of carbon dioxide gas, designed to penetrate the skin quickly and intensely—that's a different mechanism. But if you want the effects of carbon dioxide to last longer while sitting on the skin, a product that evaporates too quickly loses its purpose as a "pack." **Three Types of Carbonated Gas Packs** After purchasing and researching various carbonated gas pack products, I found they generally fall into three categories: 1. Foam-type packs that come out as bubbles, applied to the face for about 10 minutes, then rinsed off 2. Products where you mix reagents to generate carbon dioxide gas, apply to the face, then rinse off 3. Products where you mix reagents, apply to the face, let it solidify, then peel off Foam-type products are actually often "carbonic acid" rather than pure carbon dioxide gas. For example, men's hair growth mousse also comes out as foam—this is created using a propellant gas to form bubbles. Since the goal is just to create foam momentarily, these aren't necessarily high concentration or fine molecular structures. Similarly, foam-type carbonated packs likely use propellants to force carbonic acid into a serum, meaning the gas starts evaporating the moment it's applied. While convenient, I believe the skin benefits from carbon dioxide gas are likely weaker with this type. Among the reagent-mixing types, there are two varieties: rinse-off and peel-off. Upon investigation, I found these work by mixing an acidic substance with an alkaline substance to generate carbon dioxide gas. I found a patent related to trapping carbon dioxide gas, filed on February 4th, 2016 (Heisei 28). This patent describes technology to prevent carbon dioxide gas from escaping—essentially, a method of solidifying the product so the gas stays trapped inside. This allows the carbon dioxide gas to remain in the pack for an extended period, continuing to benefit the skin. However, if it becomes too hard, it would be uncomfortable, so the patent also covers turning it into a gel form that can be peeled off. Based on this, I concluded that peel-off type products likely contain a higher concentration of carbon dioxide gas than rinse-off types. When I actually ordered several products, I found some that did peel off nicely. However, reading the patent details more carefully, I realized that to trap high-concentration carbon dioxide gas while still forming a gel, you need to mix two separate gel-based reagents together—and this currently seems to be the most effective method available. **About Concentration Labeling** Carbonated gas packs range from affordable to expensive, and some brands clearly state the carbon dioxide concentration while others don't. This might be because stating the concentration could lead to snap judgments based solely on that number. However, I realized that it's genuinely difficult for an average consumer to tell whether that concentration is momentary or sustained over time. This is likely why carbonated gas packs come in such a wide price range—there's real depth and complexity to this category. **Conclusion** Based on my research into patents and other information—though I might be slightly mistaken on some points—I believe that products where two gel-based reagents are mixed together, applied to the face, allowed to gel, and then peeled off like a sticker are likely the most effective type of carbonated gas pack. A reputable manufacturer should clearly state that it's safe to leave on for an extended period. I'm not saying the first two types are bad. However, if you're looking for maximum effectiveness, I think the key points to look for are: a high concentration of carbon dioxide gas, and special gel technology that prevents the gas from escaping quickly. Today's topic was a bit technical, but since carbonated gas packs are extremely popular right now, I hope this helps you all become better at identifying quality products. If you're using a particular product, or think you've found one that matches the patented technology I discussed, please let me know in the comments! Thank you for watching until the end. See you in the next video. Goodbye!
