Hello everyone, this is Real Da. Today is a day I've been eagerly anticipating—I've come to the 'Dior Scientific Conference in Tokyo,' where Dior is unveiling its latest technology in Japan. This is the reveal of Dior's cutting-edge hyaluronic acid technology, with technicians from around the world gathering to present. Much of what will be shared hasn't been made public yet, and even as a dermatologist, there's a lot I'm hearing for the first time, so I'm really excited. Here's a look at the venue. I got special permission to film before everyone else arrived. This event will feature new products incorporating the latest hyaluronic acid research. On my channel, I've talked before about Dior's research foundations, repair technologies, and delivery systems for active ingredients—but today's theme is the 'Hyaluronic Acid Paradox,' which challenges the common assumptions everyone has about this well-known ingredient. At our clinic, we regularly perform hyaluronic acid injections, so hearing that this might be challenged by something new really caught my interest. The packaging design is also quite unique. Today features not only these new product announcements but also presentations from leading researchers at the forefront of hyaluronic acid research, with simultaneous interpretation to help explain the details thoroughly. There's more happening in the hall ahead, so I'm going to go listen in. ―― I'm joined by the two speakers who just presented: Dr. Patricia from Dior and Ms. Ozawa, Senior Manager at the Asia Innovation Center. Thank you both for joining me. That presentation was absolutely fascinating. What struck me especially was a survey question about wanting to look younger—about 80% of Japanese women said yes, compared to about 60% of French women. It seems the French may be more inclined to embrace aging. Also interesting was that over 70% of Japanese women responded positively to the question of whether they could accept their age, and 81% said that if they could accept their age, they wouldn't feel as pressured to look younger. Of course, appearance, lifestyle, and looking young aren't necessarily the same thing, but the concept of 'knowing who you are' is a fascinating theme. ――I imagine it must be challenging to develop skincare suited to so many different needs. In terms of medical aesthetic dermatology trends, anti-aging approaches used to focus on the deeper dermis layer—firming and reducing wrinkles. Recently, though, it seems the focus has shifted to the epidermis. Is this reflected in product development as well? Dr. Patricia: That's an interesting question. When we look at skin, the first thing we see is the epidermis. While understanding of the deeper layers has advanced, attention to the epidermis itself had diminished. But the epidermis plays a critical role in maintaining the overall health of the skin. It's rich in hyaluronic acid, but as we age, this amount decreases. As a result, the environment for the cells that make up the epidermis—including stem cells—deteriorates, and their function declines. Until now, much of how epidermal hyaluronic acid is lost remained a mystery. But this time, focusing on the phenomenon of 'leakage' led to a major discovery. Ms. Ozawa: Recent aging research studying what makes skin look youthful has revealed that when epidermal turnover functions normally, skin appears healthy and youthful. This led to more research on the epidermis, which revealed that when proteases invade the basement membrane, hyaluronic acid leaks out from the epidermis. We also focused on stem cells and discovered that they're connected to the basement membrane via collagen and similar components. When proteases attack this collagen and the connection is lost, it becomes even easier for proteases to invade further—creating a vicious cycle. This time, we discovered that fermented hyaluronic acid itself has the ability to inhibit these proteases. This feels like a very Dior-esque piece of research. Dior has long emphasized the importance of basement membrane adhesion, believing that when the basement membrane is healthy, skin appears beautiful. The discovery that holes forming in the basement membrane cause epidermal hyaluronic acid to leak out was truly surprising to us. This leads to reduced epidermal hyaluronic acid, thinner-looking skin, and loss of moisture and radiance. Arriving at fermented hyaluronic acid as a solution to strengthen the basement membrane feels like a very fitting story for Dior. ――This time, the focus seems to be on hyaluronic acid again. At our clinic, we perform hyaluronic acid injections almost daily, but unfortunately, the effects tend to fade after about six months, requiring regular treatments. Could this new technology help supplement that? Is there a special technology to properly deliver both high and medium molecular weight hyaluronic acid into the skin? Ms. Ozawa: There are many types of hyaluronic acid—high, medium, low molecular weight, and cross-linked varieties. We place great importance on quality, using injection-grade, impurity-free, premium hyaluronic acid generously in our cosmetic formulations. The high molecular weight, cross-linked hyaluronic acid isn't so much about penetration but rather about retaining moisture at the epidermal level and resisting breakdown—that's its key benefit. The other ingredient we incorporated is medium molecular weight hyaluronic acid. As reported in published research, this type strengthens intercellular adhesion and is unique among hyaluronic acid types for its 'repair' effect. Aiming to repair the epidermis, we combined this medium molecular weight hyaluronic acid with the other type. Reaching this combination took considerable trial and error, and we ultimately patented the formula we discovered—this is Dior's breakthrough this time. Our long-standing focus on hyaluronic acid research aligned with our years of basement membrane research, resulting in this new scientific development. ――I'm looking forward to following Dior's beauty research going forward. Thank you so much for today. ―― Welcome, Virginie. This was the topic that stood out to me most today. We already knew that epidermal hyaluronic acid decreases, but the exact cause wasn't well understood. Until now, most approaches focused on promoting hyaluronic acid production. Is suppressing the leakage more effective for maintaining epidermal hyaluronic acid levels? Regarding the basement membrane, previous focus was on adhesion—are there other new areas of focus this time, besides preventing leakage? Virginie: What's crucial is for the skin to have a healthy basement membrane, which builds resistance against external aggressors. Our major discovery this time is the link between hyaluronic acid, stem cell anchoring proteins, and the dermal-epidermal junction. Preventing hyaluronic acid from leaking out through this junction is extremely important, and that's what we need to address. We need to help the skin build resistance through hyaluronic acid—essentially balancing the 'in and out' of hyaluronic acid. Maintaining good concentrations of hyaluronic acid in the epidermis is a challenge relevant across all age groups. ――I have a four-year-old daughter, and when I touch her skin, I can really feel that plumpness—like it's full of hyaluronic acid. Getting back to that level might be difficult, though... Virginie: Maintaining the connections at the dermal-epidermal junction, along with proper care to support that, is key. ―― We knew that epidermal hyaluronic acid decreases with age, but the mechanism wasn't well understood. This time, we learned that holes forming in the basement membrane allow hyaluronic acid to leak out, causing epidermal hyaluronic acid levels to drop. Since epidermal hyaluronic acid is essential to the skin's barrier function, damage to the epidermis also affects the dermis, leading to sagging, wrinkles, and loss of firmness throughout the skin. The key finding presented today was the discovery of fermented hyaluronic acid as an approach to address this. While I can't say this will completely replace hyaluronic acid injections, the idea that combining approaches could help maintain results really impressed me today. Until now, hyaluronic acid injections were said to need repeating about every six months. If that could become just once a year, it might not be great for business as a practitioner (laughs). But honestly, I think that's a good thing. It means people's wishes to look and feel youthful and beautiful can be fulfilled more easily. As we understand more about why skin ages, we'll be able to discover more ingredients that address those mechanisms. Following Dior's announcement today, other manufacturers will likely pursue their own new research as well. I want to go home tonight and really process everything I learned. The future truly looks bright. We might just end up unable to age anymore (laughs). Today, we got to hear in depth from Dior's cutting-edge scientists, including researchers from Paris and specialists in iPS cell research from Kyoto. It really was a special video. The takeaway: we might just become unable to age! On this channel, I cover all kinds of cosmetics reviews, but I also bring you insights from experts like these on the latest research. If you enjoyed this, please subscribe and give it a thumbs up. See you in the next video—goodbye! I'm honestly so moved by today.
