Hello everyone, I'm Dr. Tomori Nitta, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. The sun is getting stronger and early summer is here. One question I've been receiving frequently lately is: "Since wearing a mask outside causes my sunscreen to come off, I'd like to use an oral sunscreen instead — which one do you recommend?" I've been getting this question both in comments and in person. Oral sunscreens have suddenly exploded in variety recently. Today, I'd like to share my perspective as a dermatologist on whether these oral sunscreens actually work. To get straight to the point: taking an oral sunscreen alone does not provide the same level of protection as applying a topical sunscreen. The American Academy of Dermatology has even issued a public warning stating that oral sunscreen supplements cannot replace topical sunscreens. That said, this doesn't mean oral sunscreens are completely ineffective or fraudulent. I personally think the problem lies in the name itself. The term "oral sunscreen" creates the impression that simply taking a pill will fully block UV rays without needing to apply anything to the skin. In reality, however, the plant-based ingredients commonly found in these products — such as citrus and rosemary extracts — don't actually block UV rays. Instead, they have antioxidant properties that help repair and reduce the damage caused by sun exposure. In other words, a more accurate description would be "oral antioxidant supplement" rather than "oral sunscreen." If I were to name such a product, I would call it something like "drinkable brightening serum" or "oral antioxidant supplement." The name "oral sunscreen" is simply misleading. If you rely solely on an oral sunscreen without applying a topical one, you will still get sunburned and your skin will still sustain significant damage. There is absolutely nothing wrong with using these supplements as an added bonus on top of properly applied sunscreen — but they should never be used as a replacement. Keep in mind that sun exposure is responsible for approximately 70% of skin aging. I hope you'll arm yourself with accurate knowledge and take proper UV protection seriously. This channel covers a wide range of topics related to beauty and health, so please consider subscribing. See you in the next video. Goodbye!
