Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori (Yui Tomori). Today I want to talk about mist toners, which for some reason there are a lot of this year. I'll thoroughly explain why mist cosmetics are good and what skin types they suit, so if you're curious, please watch until the end.
Have you all used mist toners? Until recently, mist toners were mainly about moisturizing—used in autumn and winter for full-body and facial hydration, protecting against dryness during the day rather than in summer. But for some reason, this season a lot of products aimed at different purposes are coming out.
One advantage is that mist toners are easy to carry around and easy to use over makeup, so you can moisturize on top of your makeup. Another point is that since it's very hot this year, rather than just relying on sunscreen every day, people want to add ingredients that provide hydration plus suppress inflammation—applying beauty ingredients during the day. But with toners or serums, makeup can get smudged. That's probably why mists have become popular, in my analysis.
This time I gathered some products available at drugstores. Among them, there are these three, plus one more I couldn't buy—Matsukiyo's original product—making four in total. All of them commonly contain vitamin C. In terms of beauty ingredients you're exposed to during the day, I really feel vitamin C is important. So brands seem to have come up with mists because people want to use vitamin C during the day without ruining their makeup.
Let me explain them one by one. First, this is Melano CC's whitening mist toner. Of course it says "whitening," but I think this is especially good for people with acne, enlarged pores, or oily skin. The active ingredient is a vitamin C derivative called L-ascorbic acid 2-glucoside, which is a water-soluble vitamin C derivative. In addition, it contains dipotassium glycyrrhizinate, an anti-inflammatory ingredient. It also contains salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is an oil-soluble ingredient that dissolves easily in sebum and has a peeling effect, which softens the keratin layer a bit—helping with skin troubles, acne prevention, and also suppressing sebum. For people concerned about sebum, pores, and acne, this mist seems great for preventing spots and reducing pore visibility during the day.
Next is this one—Derma Laser's Delays VC, categorized as a mist serum. This contains five types of vitamin C derivatives, adding up to about 10% total. The combination is really interesting—it includes both water-soluble and oil-soluble vitamin C derivatives, as well as fast-acting vitamin C derivatives. Layering several types of vitamin C like this is fascinating. With 10% concentration, the antioxidant effect is very strong, and it also contains azelaic acid, which is great for enlarged pores and slight stickiness. Among all these products, this one has the highest vitamin C concentration, so I think it has the strongest antioxidant effect.
Next is the Kansosan Moisture Barrier Mist. Given the name includes "dry," you'd think it's just a hydrating mist, but actually it also contains a vitamin C derivative—ascorbyl glucoside, which is water-soluble, so it's more about reducing stickiness than whitening. It also contains a peptide called glycyl glycine. This peptide helps prevent the funnel-shaped pores caused by inflammation from excess sebum, meaning even if sebum increases, it helps prevent inflammation. Beyond that, it also contains niacinamide, water-soluble ceramide, and adsorptive hyaluronic acid, so rather than being about antioxidant vitamin C, it seems more focused on suppressing inner-dryness. It leans more toward moisture care, but since it does contain vitamin C, the antioxidant effect isn't zero—so I think this is great not so much for oily skin, but for people with inner-dry skin.
There's one more I couldn't buy—Matsukiyo's original vitamin C mist. This is called the Ultra High Concentration Vitamin C Mist Toner, limited to one per customer, and it was sold out when I went. It contains an oil-soluble vitamin C derivative called ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate. Since it's oil-soluble, I think it absorbs well and blends nicely with skin during this season when sebum increases. It also contains ceramide and hyaluronic acid, so along with hydration, I think the antioxidant power is quite strong too. It also contains niacinamide. I'd say Melano CC suits people concerned about acne and shine, Kansosan suits people with inner-dry skin, and this Matsukiyo original falls somewhere in between.
The Derma Laser product stands a bit apart—it works for all skin types while focusing more on caring for skin aging through strong antioxidant power. Since it contains 10% vitamin C derivatives, it likely helps cover things like enlarged pores through its antioxidant effect as well.
Different in positioning from the four products introduced so far is d'Alba's First Spray Serum. I think this is a mist spray meant for people with very dry skin. It's separated into two layers—an oil layer and other moisturizing ingredients—so you need to shake it before use. The main reason it went viral is that flight attendants use it because airplane cabins are extremely dry, and that's how it broke through. As for ingredients, it contains niacinamide and antioxidant truffle extract. According to d'Alba's official information, it has high antioxidant power. Unlike the other products that boost antioxidant power with vitamin C, this one doesn't contain vitamin C, but truffle extract is said to protect against oxidative stress, so it seems to include antioxidant ingredients meant for daytime use. However, since it contains oil among its moisturizing ingredients, people other than those with dry skin might feel it's a bit sticky when used in summer. Still, its moisturizing power is the highest among these, so I think it's highly recommended for people with dry skin who are also concerned about daytime oxidative inflammation.
To sum up, what I want mist sprays to do is provide antioxidant support—suppressing daytime inflammation. Since many brands equate suppressing inflammation with vitamin C, a lot of these products focus on exposing your skin to vitamin C this season. But some brands also include their own unique antioxidant ingredients. With such strong sunlight and UV rays, your skin really does oxidize during the day and lean toward inflammation, which can lead to enlarged pores and spots. So even if you're wearing sunscreen and blocking UV rays, applying antioxidant products during the day is likely to become a trend going forward. I hope you'll choose a mist spray with antioxidant power that suits your skin type and spray it on during the day to help suppress oxidative inflammation this summer.
So, how was it? Today I introduced mist toners to all of you. If you're interested, please check each one out. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
