[About Skincare for Spots, Wrinkles, and Sagging]
Q: I'm currently using Kiehl's retinol, Obagi C25 serum, and Epistème's RX cream for spots, wrinkles, and sagging, but it's costly. I'd like to simplify to just Lancôme's Renergie H-CF and Ripple Serum. Would this be less effective?
A: Renergie H-CF contains both vitamin C and niacinamide, so I think it's worth trying the switch first and seeing how your skin responds. Cosmetics aren't medicine, so I don't think it will make things worse. Also, being able to continue using an appropriate amount every day is very important. So if you feel your current routine is overkill for you, it's completely fine to scale down.
[About Treatment Frequency]
Q: Should treatment frequency change with age? I'm in my late 50s and don't have much sagging.
A: It really depends on the type of device used rather than age. With Ulthera, once every six months is fine, but with devices that mimic Ulthera like Ultracel or Ultracel Q Plus, or Doublo, it's more like every three months. Among treatments, shower-type devices like Liftera would be once every one to two months. It's more about the device than age.
[About Melasma and Under-eye Sagging]
Q: I'm almost 50, and recently my melasma and under-eye sagging have become more pronounced. From your talks I understand cosmetics can't cure it, but I'd like to slow it down as much as possible. I'm currently confused, using Muji cosmetics, Fancl, and Astalift jelly. I've never had cosmetic surgery.
A: For melasma, it's better to take oral medication too, so Tranexamic acid (Transino) or L-cysteine supplements would help. Muji and Fancl are fine too, but Astalift contains nano-sized ceramide well, which is good for dryness. However, for melasma, it's better to have products containing tranexamic acid, so something like Ihada's whitening line, or Transino's whitening serum would be good to incorporate.
Also, vitamin C should be included, so things like Obagi's Clear C Lotion, or the Real C Serum from Spa Treatment that I also use. People often ask which vitamin C to use since there are so many types—water-soluble vitamin C like Obagi or Spa Treatment tends to suit oily skin better. As for APPS—like the one in Cira's products, or Blanc Doux's Switch Shot (a powder-mixed APPS) which I loved and used up—these are better for people wanting more firmness or who are concerned about dryness. It's good to use salt-type vitamin C and APPS depending on your needs.
If possible, I'd also recommend adding a retinol product, like Kiehl's Renewing Serum or Clé de Peau Beauté's essence. There's also The Mytol Essence from Taisho Pharmaceutical, which contains retinol, vitamin C, and niacinamide all together. I've used more than half of the bottle myself and really think it's great, so if you want to simplify to one product, The Mytol Essence would be good. I was honestly a bit moved when I discovered it.
[About Melasma Treatment Progress]
Q: I had laser treatment for melasma last year, and since then I've been taking oral tranexamic acid and applying tretinoin-hydroquinone for over a year, but I still have a hazy, melasma-like discoloration. Should I continue applying tretinoin-hydroquinone going forward?
A: So you've been using it for over a year since the laser treatment last year. I think it would be better to take a break from hydroquinone and increase the tretinoin percentage, or try a different approach. Was the laser melasma treatment done only once, or multiple times? If it was just once, I think doing another full course would be good.
[About Spots and Dullness Concerns]
Q: Due to age, I'm troubled by spots and dullness on my face. I'd like to go to a cosmetic clinic rather than use cosmetics—what treatments would you recommend?
A: I can't say without seeing your face. Whether it's dullness from thickened stratum corneum or melasma—I really need to look at it to tell. So definitely go to a clinic, explain your concerns, and get care suited to you. Even when people say "spots," it could be age spots, freckles, or even seborrheic keratosis (a type of wart-like growth), and the approach differs completely depending on which it is. So rather than deciding what treatment you want, it's better to consult about your specific concern.
[Introducing Products I Loved Using]
One product I really loved was IPSA's Time R Aqua limited edition bottle. The contents haven't changed, but the limited bottle is a nice blue color. I was planning to film a video after a while and Time R Aqua was supposed to be in stock, but when I went to film, it was gone. Then I heard a limited bottle was coming out, so I got this blue one.
This is really "Aqua in Blue"—it contains ingredients that help retain and circulate moisture in the skin properly, plus tranexamic acid, and glycyrrhizinic acid too. So it's good for sensitive skin, for those wanting to whiten their skin, and of course for acne-prone skin as well—it's truly an all-purpose, wonderful lotion, so I think it's worth having one bottle.
I tend to splash lotion generously all the way down to my décolletage, so I really love this one. The reason I thought about this product is because of THREE's Emming Lotion—the cleansing, face wash, and lotion line—I thought the cleansing oil was also really great to use. This lotion has a strong rose scent. I believe it uses roses from Wakayama, and I saw evidence that it helps balance hormones.
Lately, partly due to age I suppose, I sometimes feel a bit down or unstable emotionally. But when I apply this all over my face and then onto my décolletage too, the rose scent wafts up beautifully, and it feels really pleasant. There's also data suggesting it helps with pre-menstrual acne, and since I do sometimes get acne before my period, this Emming series—the pink line—is really good for those concerned about hormonal fluctuations specific to women. The cleansing felt really nice, and the lotion (emulsion) was good too.
I really loved this lotion so much that I wanted to apply it not just to my décolletage but all over my body, so it's disappearing quickly. I was thinking of repurchasing the same one since it's almost gone, but since I had an opportunity to feature something in a video, I decided to go with IPSA this time. I still plan to continue using the THREE lotion as well. In summer, I tend to want to splash on lotion generously, so yes, I'm definitely the type who likes to apply toner liberally.
