Hello everyone, I'm Tomori Nitta. Today I'm going to get my second COVID-19 vaccine shot, exactly three weeks after my first dose. I've heard that side effects are more common with the second dose, so I'm a little nervous. I should also mention that I've been feeling a bit under the weather for the past couple of days — it seems I caught a sore throat from my daughter — though I haven't had a fever, so I decided to go ahead with the appointment. I'll also be addressing some of the comments I received on my first vaccine video. Off I go! [4 hours after vaccination] I'm back. The clinic was different from last time, so I wasn't able to film the injection very well, but it went smoothly. So far I don't notice much difference from the first time — my left arm feels a bit heavy when I hold the camera, and it's a little sore when pressed, but no fever, headache, or anything unusual. I'll film another update tomorrow morning. [The next morning] My temperature is 37.4°C — a slight fever. Last night I felt completely fine, maybe even better than before the shot, so I ended up working on a manuscript until around 1 a.m. I had no symptoms at all at that point. But after falling asleep, I started to feel chills and joint pain. This morning I woke up feeling sluggish and found I had a low-grade fever. I'm going to take Calnoc (acetaminophen) and rest today. [48 hours after vaccination] Honestly, the second dose was really rough. The appointment itself went smoothly — I arrived at 2:30 p.m. and was out by 3:00 — but I had been debating right up until the last minute whether to go ahead, given that I was still recovering from my daughter's cold. I was fine when I went to bed, but about 12 hours after the shot — around 2 a.m. — I started feeling chills. By morning I had fatigue, a temperature of 37.5°C, joint pain, and a headache, and I spent the entire day in bed. The four main side effects of COVID vaccines are: arm soreness, fatigue, headache, and fever. Comparing the first and second doses of the Pfizer vaccine: - Arm soreness: ~60% → ~66% - Fatigue: ~30% → ~40% - Headache: ~24% → ~40% - Fever: ~7% → ~20% Among the five people I know personally who have been vaccinated — my mother, my sister and brother (both healthcare workers), Dr. Nishikawa, and myself — I was the only one who developed a fever, which is consistent with the roughly 20% statistic. I woke up the following morning feeling completely recovered, with no remaining symptoms. My side effects lasted only one day. I want to be clear that I do not believe everyone should get this vaccine. Having experienced the side effects firsthand, I feel strongly that each person needs to weigh the pros and cons of getting vaccinated — and of not getting vaccinated — for themselves. I received many comments asking about side effects and reported deaths. I am aware that some people have experienced serious adverse reactions, and that some families have been affected as well. It is genuinely a difficult issue. No medicine or vaccine is 100% safe. [On ADE — Antibody-Dependent Enhancement] Many commenters raised concerns about ADE. ADE is a phenomenon that first came to attention in dengue fever research, where antibodies produced after an initial infection can worsen the outcome of a subsequent infection. It has been observed with some vaccines. Many people have been citing a paper from Osaka University, but that paper describes the possibility of ADE occurring when someone is infected with the coronavirus itself — not as a result of vaccination. The paper's conclusion suggests that, since the region responsible for enhancement was identified, future vaccines could be designed to exclude that region, thereby further reducing an already low risk. There are currently no globally reported cases of ADE caused by COVID vaccines. For a clear explanation, please see the summary published by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), linked in the description. [Magnet test] Some viewers asked whether magnets stick to the injection site after vaccination. I tested this using a refrigerator magnet — confirmed it sticks to the fridge — and then tried it on both my vaccinated arm and my unvaccinated arm. It did not stick to either. No magnets are involved in this vaccine. [On information gathering] Smartphone algorithms show you more of what you've already been searching for. If you've searched for vaccine dangers once, you'll keep seeing content that reinforces that view. If you're worried about vaccines, I encourage you to also actively seek out sources that support vaccine safety — scientific papers, expert commentary, and official public health guidance — and judge for yourself which sources are more credible. Look for content that cites primary sources and original research, not just secondhand claims. Recommended resources: - COVID-19 Vaccine Q&A (official Japanese government resource) - CoV-Navi - YouTube channel:緩和委員長 (Kanwa Iinchou) — covers the Osaka University paper and debunks common misinformation about COVID death statistics with clear citations I'm not claiming that everything I say is 100% correct. I simply ask that you gather balanced information and make the choice that is right for you. Please also refrain from attacking people who hold different views — it rarely leads anywhere good. I sincerely hope this pandemic ends soon and that everyone can live safely. [Managing side effects] For my fever and joint pain, I took Calnoc (acetaminophen). The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare states that both acetaminophen and ibuprofen-based medications (such as Loxonin) are acceptable for managing vaccine side effects. However, acetaminophen is generally considered safer for elderly individuals and pregnant women. An over-the-counter option is Tylenol. Please note that taking pain relievers prophylactically before symptoms appear is not recommended — only take them once symptoms develop. See you in the next video. Goodbye!
