[Q&A Summary: May 24 Livestream]
Q1. I have a date on Saturday. Do you have any lipstick that looks clean/innocent but still has a sheer, translucent feel?
A1. Here's a great option! This season, I'd recommend Vaunce De Couleur's limited edition color, the "Southern Mucosa Lip." It has a bit of shine while still looking clean and innocent. If you want to splurge a bit more, Dior's Lip Maximizer in shade 043 gives a plump look while still appearing clean. Also, classic pink is always a safe bet—Jill Stuart's lipstick in shade 05 gives an innocent look too. And though it has some red in it, Dior Addict Lip Glow is also quite nice.
Q2. I understand sunscreen application amounts are set by international standards, and that's quite a lot. But sunscreen-containing primers usually only recommend a pearl-sized amount. Does that amount actually provide effective protection?
A2. I mention this often, but primer isn't something you use specifically to get UV protection effects. Even if it says "UV primer" on the label, you really need to apply the proper amount to get the stated SPF effect. The international standard is 0.2g per square centimeter, but people don't apply primer that thickly—they apply it as a thin layer. So if you apply it as a typical primer amount, you won't get the full SPF effect. If you applied a ton of primer, you probably would get the effect, but since most people don't apply that much, it's understandable that you won't get the full protection.
Q3. I'm 37 with combination skin. I've recently become concerned about dullness around my pores, so I started using Amritara's Age Solution Cream. Do you have any other recommendations, or something to add to my routine?
A3. Since you're using Amritara, I imagine you like organic skincare. If that's the case, though not 100% organic, I'd suggest trying Eno Organic's enzyme cleanser, or their newly released sheet mask containing arbutin.
Q4. I work outdoors and sweat a lot, causing my sunscreen to wash away. My eyes hurt and my skin gets very dry, so I spray facial mist and reapply sunscreen throughout the day. By evening, my face gets itchy and irritated. Do you have any affordable, moisturizing toner recommendations? Also, is there a sunscreen that's okay to reapply many times?
A4. It depends on what you consider "affordable," but if your skin gets extremely dry, I'd recommend Carte HD products, which you can get at drugstores. They also have a daytime mist you could use during the day, plus creams and gels you could carry with you to reapply. As for sunscreen, generally it's fine to reapply as many times as needed, but for someone with your concerns, I'd especially recommend La Roche-Posay. It has a tone-up effect and strong moisturizing properties, so please give it a try.
Q5. I have a kindergarten field trip the day after tomorrow, and it looks like there'll be a lot of UV exposure and sweating. What foundation do you use on days like that?
A5. This is something I think about often myself. On days I expect to sweat a lot, I use Cosme Decorte's AQ Meliority Fluid. If I think my makeup will really melt off that day, I skip foundation almost entirely and instead apply La Roche-Posay as a base, layer a bit more, then use Clé de Peau's cushion compact on top. For an outdoor event like a field trip, I'd wear a big hat, apply sunscreen thoroughly, and use just a touch of Clé de Peau for foundation.
Q6. I'm bothered by hair above my upper lip, but since I just had a baby, I can't really go get it professionally removed. Would shaving with a facial shaver at home be my only option?
A6. Honestly, I'm not very knowledgeable about home hair removal devices. Since they can't provide permanent hair removal, they're more of a temporary fix—so I'd think going to a clinic would actually be better if possible. Since these devices essentially work by burning the hair with heat, I'm honestly not sure if they're safe to use on the face. For safety, I'd recommend using a facial shaver on your face for now, and getting professional treatment once you have time.
Q7. What skincare products are safe to use during pregnancy?
A7. Generally, most products are fine. However, you should avoid certain ingredients like retinol or retinyl palmitate, and stronger products like those from Zo Skin Health that are more intense, especially those from overseas. Generally speaking, standard commercially available products are safe. That said, if your skin peels, turns red, or becomes irritated from any product other than sunscreen, you should stop using it immediately. If you don't want to waste a product, try patch-testing it on your body first, and if there's no reaction, it should be safe to use on your face.
Q8. Do you have any recommendations for stick-type sunscreens?
A8. This season I've been using Harry Putu's "Miracle Sun Band Duo" quite a bit. Applied normally, it gives a nice sheen, but if you apply it deliberately in certain spots—like your collarbone—it creates a beautiful sparkly, glowing effect, perfect for summer body makeup looks.
Q9. Sensei, you always look glowing and beautiful, but I have a lot of freckles, which really gets me down. Do you have a recommendation for a high-coverage foundation?
A9. I'd recommend the cushion foundation released by YouTuber Marilyn. I really love how she does her makeup—she's incredibly skilled at concealing freckles, and the cushion foundation she developed has really strong coverage. Previously it only came in darker shades, but recently lighter shades were added too, so you can now match it to your skin tone. If you search "Marilyn Foundation" as a YouTuber, it should come up—I believe the product is called "VIM." Definitely worth checking out.
Q10. A lot of YouTubers say that scalp massage leads to facial lifting. Is this true? I've been doing it every day, believing it works.
A10. There is likely a temporary lifting effect. Massaging the scalp can relax muscle tension, triggering a kind of reflexive muscle response that causes a momentary lift. So it's not entirely false. However, this effect doesn't accumulate over time to create a permanent smaller/tighter appearance. It's similar to how swelling temporarily goes down—there's a brief lifting effect, but it returns to normal afterward. So it's not a lie, but it's not something that lasts long-term either.
Q11. My child developed a lot of acne, and now there are red marks left behind. They've been using Heparin cream and Epiduo prescribed by a dermatologist daily, but it's not improving much.
A11. That redness is post-inflammatory pigmentation, so it won't improve quickly. Since your child is in high school, the priority right now should be preventing new acne from forming. For skincare, make sure to cleanse thoroughly, and moisturize with just toner—no need for a lotion/emulsion on top. If they're already using Heparin cream and Epiduo, I think continuing with that regimen should be fine.
Q12. I started drinking coffee to get more chlorogenic acid, but it's been giving me bad stomach pain. Supplements cause the same issue. I want to increase my skin's moisture levels—what should I do?
A12. Try focusing on gut health. It's known that increasing beneficial gut bacteria raises skin moisture levels. If chlorogenic acid doesn't agree with you, try improving your gut health through other means to increase good bacteria instead.
Q13. After orthodontic treatment, the area around my mouth has sagged overall, giving me a double-chin-like appearance. Are there any treatments you'd recommend to improve this?
A13. If the whole mouth area has sagged, I'd recommend HIFU or Thermage treatments. If you really want a dramatic before-and-after result, thread lifting might be a better option.
Q14. I had laser treatment to remove a dark spot. What kind of skincare should I do to prevent it from coming back?
A14. The most important thing is sun protection—make sure to apply sunscreen diligently. Also, certain brightening products (like last year's version of a particular whitening serum) contained ingredients that help suppress recurrence after laser treatment, and this year's updated version builds on that even further. I'd recommend using such whitening products as part of your routine.
