Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Today I want to correct two beauty terms that have become quite widespread on social media but are actually being misunderstood. One is fascia release - misunderstanding this can cause your face to sag and even cause bodily issues, so I'll talk about fascia release. The other is 'moisturizing acne-prone skin,' which is actually also a misconception - it can actually worsen acne. If you're curious, please watch until the end. Fascia release works by releasing adhesions in the fascia to improve muscle movement - it originated from things like relieving pain and loosening stiffness. As this idea spread, it evolved into misconceptions like 'it makes you lose weight' or 'gives you a smaller face.' I don't think fascia release itself is suspicious or wrong - I just think the claims about it have gone too far. Especially for the face, please don't massage it. This is because friction can cause inflammation, but also because there's something called a ligament that holds muscles in place. Doing improper massage can loosen even the ligaments. If it were just the fascia loosening and improving blood flow, you'd get a smaller face, but if the ligaments loosen too, things start to sag. That becomes a cause of sagging skin. Continuously pressing the same spot or pressing the wrong areas too much isn't good either. I think everyone somewhat understands that stroking massages are bad, but pressing various areas can also loosen not just the fascia but the ligaments too, so this is quite a mistaken practice. However, there is a correct way to massage - things like lifting up and pressing, or lifting up and applying stimulation are fine. But doing the same spot repeatedly or doing it too aggressively should be avoided. Also, doing fascia release on your body doesn't make you lose weight. It's something athletes do to relieve pain, and it can improve swelling. But losing weight and reducing swelling are different things. You shouldn't think that excessive fascia release is absolutely justified. That said, when you have swelling, tired heavy legs, body pain, or shoulder pain, it can be very effective - but please be careful with fascia release on the face. Now for the other point - there's an old logic that says 'when skin gets dry it produces oil, so people with acne need to moisturize.' Is this 100% wrong? Not exactly, which makes it tricky - there are indeed people who get oily when dry, and that's acne-prone people. People with dry skin don't produce sebum at all - they have a low capacity to produce sebum. So no matter how dry their skin gets, dry-skinned people won't produce sebum. Conversely, people with acne-prone skin do produce oil. So there are people who get oily when dry, and people who don't. So should acne-prone people moisturize after all? Of course they should. But you shouldn't moisturize in a way that adds oil. Moisturizing that adds water is fine - for example, using ceramides or increasing natural moisturizing factors is okay. But when people are told to 'moisturize for acne,' for some reason they start applying emulsions or creams. That's adding sebum - and since they're already producing excess sebum, adding oil on top causes acne to worsen and pores to widen. So it's not 100% wrong, but you shouldn't moisturize in a way that adds oil. The key point is to use products like toners that increase natural moisturizing factors or ceramides. So if you think 'I have acne but my skin gets dry, so my acne will get worse' and you're applying emulsion or cream - that's a mistake. However, if that emulsion or cream has a non-comedogenic formula, it's still mostly fine. But many people use products like Curel. Curel itself isn't bad - it's designed for people with dry, sensitive skin, for people who don't produce oil. Having acne and also feeling dry doesn't mean you have dry sensitive skin - it means you have high sebum but low internal water content, which is called 'inner dry' skin, and that's why acne increases. So there are products made for such people that say 'it may feel sticky but please moisturize too,' and using those is fine - but please don't get confused. People with dry skin absolutely cannot get acne - that's certain. If you have acne, you don't have dry skin. People who have acne but also feel dry have high oil production but low ability to retain moisture. So you can supplement that with appropriate moisturizing, but please stop adding oil. Many people apply cream or emulsion because they were told 'you need to moisturize more than worry about acne' - but no, that's not right. I wanted to say that people with acne basically have high oil production. People with dry skin don't get acne. So moisturizing for acne can actually make things worse for some people, so please think it through properly before doing it. So, how was that? Surprisingly many people get this wrong, so if you're doing fascia release because you're worried about it and think it'll give you a smaller face, please be careful. And if you're applying cream or emulsion thinking you need to moisturize for acne, please switch to moisturizing that retains water instead. Please be careful about this, and when posting on social media, please be careful about what you share too. Today I talked about how some things that are trending on social media are actually a bit different from a medical perspective. If there's anything else you're curious about medically, please feel free to write it in the comments. Thank you for watching until the end today. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
