Hello everyone, I'm Arata Tomori, an internal medicine and dermatologist. The hot days keep continuing, don't they? UV rays are also strong, so are you all wearing sunscreen? For those of you watching this channel, I can already hear you saying, "Of course! There's never a day I don't wear sunscreen." A question I often get is: "I apply sunscreen in the morning, but I'm told to reapply it every 2-3 hours for UV protection. How am I supposed to reapply it?" It's true that with SPF50, calculations suggest you can be protected all day, but that's based on applying 2mg per square centimeter. In reality, most people don't apply that much, and sunscreen can also wear off from sweat or masks, so reapplication is really important. For men, it might be relatively easy, but women typically wear makeup—sunscreen, then foundation, then powder and blush on top. So the question of "how do you even reapply sunscreen over all that?" comes up a lot, and honestly, it does seem physically impossible. Even I don't remove all my makeup to reapply sunscreen underneath—that's simply not feasible. Ideally, you should do that for perfect protection, but it's unrealistic. Redoing your face from scratch would mean redoing your entire skincare routine too. So today, I want to demonstrate how I actually reapply sunscreen in practice. In the morning, I apply a generous amount of sunscreen, then layer foundation on top. Let's say 3 hours have passed since then—I'll now reapply sunscreen over my makeup. What you'll need: a milk-type (lotion) sunscreen (I use La Roche-Posay's "UVIDEA XL Protection"), a mirror, and a sponge. This isn't so much "reapplying sunscreen" as it is "fixing makeup breakdown while adding sunscreen." Makeup is oil-based, so when sebum comes out, it mixes with the makeup and causes it to break down. Similarly to how cleansing oil uses oil to lift and remove makeup, the oil content in milk-type sunscreen can lift and remove the broken-down makeup. Specifically, I place a small amount of sunscreen on areas prone to breakdown, like under the eyes, and pat it in gently. This lifts away the excess broken-down makeup. Once it looks reasonably cleaned up, I pat on more sunscreen. This particular product also has a tone-up effect, so it blends well even when mixed with makeup. This layering technique works well with milk or gel-type products, but might be difficult with more liquid formulas. If you're concerned about looking too white afterward, you can layer cushion foundation on top. Since this La Roche-Posay product also functions as a makeup base, it blends in naturally without leaving noticeably light patches. I carry this milk-type sunscreen along with a sponge in my pouch, and reapply whenever I'm heading out, or when I notice my makeup breaking down while playing with my kids, for example. Another option I'd recommend is a sunscreen powder like ETVOS's "Mineral UV Body Powder" (SPF40 PA+++). However, powder alone isn't enough for full coverage, so it's best used as a touch-up after a proper sunscreen base—just pat it on top. But if even that feels like too much hassle—carrying a sponge and mirror—there's a product I've been really excited about this year: Shiseido Pharmaceutical's "Clear Wellness Smart Milk Compact" (SPF43 PA+++). This is a genuinely novel concept: a "tinted milk lotion" that's been compressed into a compact solid form. Milk lotions are normally difficult to solidify, but by doing so, this product becomes portable while still providing enough thickness when applied to the skin. Since milk lotion contains oil, it works great for touch-ups, and because it's tinted, it also evens out your complexion. In addition to the wrinkle-care ingredients common across the Shiseido Pharmaceutical lineup, it also contains Centella Asiatica extract (CICA), which is known for its anti-inflammatory and skin-barrier-strengthening properties—potentially helpful for skin irritation caused by mask friction as well. I wouldn't recommend using this alone as your entire base makeup, but rather as a touch-up option when you don't want to carry sunscreen around, or as a substitute for foundation over a base of sunscreen you've already applied properly in the morning. It doesn't offer as much coverage as foundation, but unlike a milk lotion that fully absorbs into skin, it maintains some thickness on the surface—giving you color correction, skincare benefits, and touch-up capability all in one. It really feels like something that should have existed before but didn't. Since this summer is expected to be especially hot, if you're struggling with how to reapply sunscreen, you could use the milk-type reapplication method I demonstrated first, or if that feels like too much effort, try this Smart Milk Compact. Combining both might be the ideal approach, but please find whatever method works best for you. Today, I covered a question I get asked frequently: how to reapply sunscreen. As I mentioned at the beginning, completely redoing your sunscreen application isn't realistic. The most important thing is applying a generous amount in the morning. But for areas where your makeup has broken down, rather than reapplying everywhere, it's more practical to just add sunscreen to those specific spots. In particular, focus on areas like the T-zone and jawline, which are prone to UV exposure and pigmentation. Whether you use a milk-type sunscreen or one of the products I introduced today, touching up these key areas is the most realistic approach. UV levels remain strong throughout the summer, so please make sure to protect yourselves properly. See you in the next video. Goodbye!
