Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. Do you all like acai? I feel like there was a huge boom for it at one point that seemed to fade away, but now I keep seeing things on social media saying acai is good for your health or that eating it helps you lose weight. So today I'm going to thoroughly analyze whether acai is really good for your body. If you're eating acai or have been curious about it, please watch until the end. So let's get right into it—what exactly is acai? You probably think of it as a berry that helps you lose weight when you eat it, but did you know that about half of its nutritional content is fat (oil)? Its nutrient composition is actually similar to nuts like almonds. It's very low in carbohydrates, and roughly 50% of its nutrients come from fat. You might be thinking, "Wait, that's different from the acai I imagined," but don't jump to conclusions yet. It looks similar to blueberries at first glance, but please remember that it's actually a nut/seed-like fruit. So what are the nutrients in it? First, there's anthocyanin. This is the same component found in blueberries, and it's said to be good for your eyes, has antioxidant properties, and anti-inflammatory effects. Acai contains about 320mg of anthocyanin per 100g. Next is dietary fiber. It supports gut health and helps with bowel movements—about 44.2g per 100g. Then there's the fat I mentioned earlier—omega 3, 6, and 9 fatty acids, at about 4.5g. There's also vitamin E, known as tocopherol, which has powerful antioxidant properties that help slow aging and improve blood circulation—about 3.7g. And then there's iron. It contains heme iron, which helps prevent anemia and is necessary for oxygen transport—about 0.5g. Since the fat is mainly oleic acid, that's part of why I said it's similar to nuts. It has anthocyanin like blueberries do, plus iron—so it's kind of like getting the best of both worlds. Many people think eating acai makes you healthier or helps you lose weight, but unfortunately, this hasn't been scientifically established. There's no clear scientific evidence in proper research papers. I checked various sources, and even the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare states that "clear scientific evidence regarding the health effects of acai on humans has not yet been sufficiently established." So it's hard to say that drinking acai will definitely produce specific results. Even in animal studies, when rats were given acai juice, their body weight didn't change—there's no data showing weight loss. However, there are some preliminary studies suggesting it may slightly lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels. I don't think it's harmful to consume, but I don't think eating it or drinking it as juice will make you lose weight. Since it contains antioxidant components like tocopherol and anthocyanin, I do think it may help suppress inflammation and oxidative damage in the body. There's an interesting study using mice. When acai was administered to mice, data showed increases in red blood cell count and hemoglobin. You might think this is simply because of the iron content, but there's a hormone called erythropoietin, also known as the "blood-making hormone," and its secretion was found to increase 2-3 hours after eating acai. This suggests that acai may not just provide iron, but may also send a signal to the body saying "make more blood"—recent research is starting to point in this direction. Blood production relates to anemia prevention and also fatigue recovery. For example, marathon runners and athletes who exercise intensely are prone to anemia. Having good blood-production function may help reduce fatigue and improve performance, so research is being conducted on potential benefits for athletes. Women tend to be more prone to anemia, so this might be particularly beneficial for them. But I think the biggest benefit really comes from the antioxidant components. Anthocyanin and tocopherol have strong antioxidant power, suppressing oxidative damage in the body. Vitamin C is famous for antioxidant properties, but acai works through a different pathway to suppress oxidation in the body. In summer, when we're exposed to more UV rays, our bodies become more prone to oxidative damage, so it might be good to consume acai actively during such seasons. Also, since it's rich in dietary fiber, it serves as food for gut bacteria. This helps balance the immune system. So overall, I think the positive aspects outweigh the negative ones. However, one thing to be careful about is what you eat it with. Isn't everything with acai in it usually sweet? Acai juice and acai bowls are sweet because acai itself contains almost no sugar, so other fruits or sugar are often added for flavoring. I once bought unsweetened acai, and honestly, it wasn't that delicious. It's precisely because sugar is added that we perceive that familiar "acai taste." So even though you might think eating acai improves your bowel movements or provides antioxidant benefits, consuming sugar along with it can spike your blood sugar and actually cause inflammation in the body. So when eating it, it might be better to keep the sweetness to a minimum—maybe flavor it with fruit or add just a little honey. Things like granola tend to be quite sweet too, so please be mindful of that. Also, I'd say it's not a good idea to consume it together with caffeine. Caffeine inhibits iron absorption, so even though acai contains iron, caffeine can interfere with its absorption. Since acai has that blood-production function I mentioned, having iron as a material component helps that function work even better. Acai bowls are often paired with morning caffe lattes or coffee, but I'd recommend avoiding that combination. To summarize, acai itself has strong antioxidant power, contains dietary fiber that supports gut health, and has a great balance of omega 3, 6, and 9 fatty acids—so overall, I think it's good for your body. However, I don't think it will help you lose weight the way many people expect, and there's currently no evidence that eating it will make you look younger or improve your skin. Perhaps as research progresses, we'll learn more about such effects. As I mentioned, sugar often gets consumed along with it, so please be careful not to overeat. It's not necessarily bad, though I find it a bit mysterious how it became such a health trend. I personally really like acai bowls and find them delicious—eating them with oatmeal does seem to improve my bowel movements. But what I really want people to be careful about is that many acai bowls contain quite a lot of sugar and fruit, so please keep that in mind. So today, I talked once again about what nutrients are in acai and what it might be good for. Previously, when I did a deep dive into natto, there was a lot of interest, so I'd like to continue exploring not just cosmetics but also foods that are commonly believed to be good for your health. If there's something you've heard is "good for you" but you're wondering if there's actual evidence behind it, please leave a comment. Also, if there's something you eat that makes you feel good, please share that in the comments too. Thank you for watching until the end today. This channel focuses on deep dives into beauty and health topics like this, so please subscribe if you enjoyed it. Also, every Tuesday I do a members-only livestream where I share things like the latest cosmetics information and supplement updates. It's 990 yen a month, so I'd love for you to join the membership as well. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
