Dr. Tomori, is it true that in Korea people no longer use toner and milky lotion? I saw that too. It's the thing where Korean skincare skips toner and milky lotion and just uses serum and cream, right? That's right. So that's half correct and half incorrect, I'd say. Korean and Japanese people's skin types shouldn't be that different, since we're both Asian after all. But what's overwhelmingly different is the climate. Korea is extremely dry and extremely cold, right? So it's really important to create a film with oil to protect the skin. But Japan has four seasons with high temperature and humidity. For example, someone from Okinawa like me has basically zero dryness. If anything, it's more about eliminating oil—since oil naturally comes out on its own, the focus becomes more about adding moisture. Skincare is about adding what's missing, so it's not that the Korean skincare method is wrong. Their serums have a bit of thickness, containing both oil and water, and on top of that, because it's extremely dry, they layer on a cream that's rich in oil. Korean creams aren't just oil-based either—they're more like water-creams. For example, Laneige's Sleeping Mask is exactly like that, so that makes sense and suits Korean people well. That said, for someone in Japan with dry skin in winter, that skincare routine would be totally fine. But conversely, if someone with oily skin or someone in very hot weather does that, they'll definitely end up with clogged pores or acne. The reason you use toner is that if you naturally produce oil, you don't need extra oil. In that case, toner or just a little milky lotion to add a bit of oil is enough. It should be decided based on where you live and your own skin type. I'm not saying you have to use toner, serum, and milky lotion all together—but if you have oily skin, you should use something light and watery, and if you have dry skin, you should use something rich in oil. It's really just that simple, so saying you don't need milky lotion or toner at all seems a bit off to me.
