Transcript (English)
Hello everyone! I'm Arata Tomori.
Is everyone sleeping well? Your facial sagging might actually be caused by lack of sleep.
So, Noborikun, what do you mean? Are you sleeping well?
"I'm still young, so I'm doing my best."
How many hours do you sleep a day?
"I really don't sleep much."
You don't sleep?
"About 4 to 6 hours."
4 to 6 hours?
"When I'm busy, sometimes it's just 4 hours."
I see. Setting aside the duration, if you rate how well-rested you feel out of 100, where would you say you are?
"I know that sleeping 7-8 hours makes me feel better. So on weekends I might get that, but overall I'd say about 60%."
So you're a bit dissatisfied right now.
"Yes, I am."
I see. You've probably heard that Japanese people are known as a nation that doesn't sleep much. Among the 33 OECD member countries, Japan ranks last in average sleep duration.
The percentage of people who sleep less than 6 hours a day on average is 37.5% for men and 40.6% for women. Women sleep even less.
Thank you, mothers, always.
"That's true. After putting the kids to bed, you wash dishes, and for me, I think about YouTube content or update Instagram."
Right, right. I think many men also don't sleep enough because of work, but especially women in their 40s to 50s and above—over 40% of them are sleep-deprived.
Japanese people really don't sleep, and among them, women in the older generation sleep even less. Of course being busy is part of it, but as women get older, their sleep tends to become lighter, and regardless of gender, elderly people often wake up to use the bathroom. Also, in the menopausal generation, sudden hot flashes or sweating occur, and when the autonomic nervous system becomes unbalanced, it becomes very hard to sleep.
Not being able to sleep obviously affects your physical condition, but sleep and beauty are also closely related.
"I kind of understand that. They talk about the 'golden time'—if you sleep between 10pm and 2am, growth hormone is released and you get beautiful skin."
It's not that you have to sleep exactly from 10pm to 2am—the key point is entering deep sleep. Even if you sleep during that time, if it's light sleep, it's not very effective. It's said that within 30 minutes of entering deep sleep, growth hormone increases to 5 to 10 times the normal amount. So it's not about the time, but how deeply you sleep that matters.
We've also released videos about getting good sleep, like warming your body, not looking at your phone, dimming the lights, or having a bedtime routine. When your body temperature rises and then drops, that's when you enter deep sleep—the bigger this temperature drop, the deeper you sleep. So it's important to raise your body temperature once beforehand.
That's why taking a proper bath is important—your temperature rises, and then falling asleep right as it cools down is ideal. Children also get warm right before sleeping, and then it gradually returns to normal as they sleep. Creating this temperature gap is very important.
So you should definitely take a bath, but if your bath time is irregular, the timing of your temperature rise won't be consistent. So it's important to go to bed around the same time each night, and take your bath before that.
We've covered this many times before, but now for the scary part I mentioned at the beginning—about facial sagging. Collagen is constantly being generated, and existing collagen is broken down and remade in a repeating cycle. The enzyme that breaks down collagen is called MMP, a collagen-degrading enzyme.
MMP becomes more active due to various factors—skin inflammation, UV exposure, and of course aging. According to research from the University of Michigan in the US, lack of sleep increases collagen-degrading factors, causing more collagen breakdown compared to people who sleep well. This means collagen that shouldn't be broken down gets destroyed too, which may lead to facial sagging and deep wrinkles.
So the fact that lack of sleep makes your face look tired might actually be related to this.
Especially for the menopausal generation, collagen-degrading enzymes are already prone to becoming more active, and in summer, UV exposure also activates MMP more easily. If sleep deprivation is added on top of that, it becomes like a triple punch. Many cosmetics for collagen repair are available now, but all that effort could go to waste, so it's better to sleep properly.
Also, the body has clock genes—even without looking at a clock, your body knows whether it's morning or night. In the morning, more collagen is produced and repair ability increases. So keeping your body clock in order strengthens your body's defense abilities.
By the way, around 9am, the skin's ability to protect against UV rays is heightened, and around 10pm, DNA repair ability increases threefold. So sleeping properly during that time means the degrading enzymes decrease, DNA damage gets repaired, and collagen breakdown is suppressed. That's why proper sleep is so important.
As I always say, balancing the autonomic nervous system is very important, and the only way to do that is through breathing. Deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, putting your body into relaxation mode, while rapid breathing activates the sympathetic nervous system.
Waking up at the same time every day helps balance your body clock. As I mentioned, in the morning your UV protection ability increases, and at night your repair functions become active. So to avoid disrupting your body clock, it's important to wake up at the same time and eat meals at the same time each day, teaching your body when it's morning, noon, and night. This is extremely important.
So while skincare, supplements, and diet are all very important for beauty, sleep might be the best beauty method of all. So if you love skincare and aesthetic medicine, sleeping well will likely make those treatments even more effective.
Unfortunately, Japanese people already don't sleep enough, and in summer, sleep time becomes even shorter. There are fireworks festivals and music festivals, after all. Summer is full of events, and since daylight hours are longer, it stays light later, which disrupts daily routines, autonomic nervous balance, and body clocks. Preventing this disruption can help prevent sagging, so along with UV protection, please try to sleep well to prevent facial sagging.
So, did you learn how important sleep is today?
"Yes, I understood very well."
What time will you sleep tonight?
"I'll try to sleep early today. How much do you sleep, doctor?"
Well, I know I should, but I try to sleep before midnight... though I'm often still awake. You know how you get LINE messages at night?
"You get a lot of replies, don't you?"
I don't often feel like I can't sleep, but I end up doing things late at night. During the day I'm busy until noon, and at night once the family finally goes to sleep, that's my only free time, so before I know it, it's already this late.
I keep saying this in videos, but everyone, please be careful too.
"Let's be careful."
I'll try to sleep early today.
