Hello everyone, this is Tomori Nitta. Do you ever feel groggy after waking up even though you slept for a long time? Or feel tired even after a long sleep, or somehow feel like you haven't slept enough? Today I'd like to talk about sleep concerns that are a bit different from insomnia. Please watch until the end. 【Why Do You Feel Groggy When You Wake Up?】 Feeling groggy when you wake up in the morning basically means you haven't achieved deep, restful sleep. Many people believe that longer sleep is better, or that sleeping during the "golden hours" from midnight to 2am is ideal, being bound by these time-based beliefs. But actually, this golden hour concept doesn't really exist. Growth hormone and other hormones are released about 2-3 hours after falling asleep, so when you really think about sleep properly, it's not necessarily midnight to 2am. In other words, not everyone needs to be asleep between midnight and 2am—what matters is that you're in deep sleep during whatever hours work for you. 【What Does Deep Sleep Really Mean?】 "Sleeping" might sound simple, but without proper deep sleep, your brain continues processing information even while you're lying down with your eyes closed. Sleep exists to rest the brain that has processed so much during the day, but if your mind stays alert like an antenna standing up all night, your body won't truly rest either. As a result, no matter how long you sleep, you'll still feel groggy. This is especially true during the pandemic, when people spend more time at home overthinking things, or checking social media for longer periods—activities that overstimulate the brain. Overthinking too much lowers the quality of sleep, and even with long sleep hours, you'll have vivid dreams and wake up with shoulder pain or fatigue. The first step is to focus on improving sleep quality. 【The Role of Sleep】 The most important thing about sleep is resting the brain. While resting, various hormones like growth hormone and melatonin are released, which helps maintain and repair the body. But if your brain stays alert and overloaded the whole time, these functions decline, and your overall bodily functions suffer too. So first, you need to calm down this "tired brain." 【New Common Sense About Sleep】 To achieve deep, restful sleep while calming your tired brain, you need to understand sleep correctly. Let me share some updated knowledge about sleep. People often think longer sleep is better, but it actually varies greatly from person to person. Terms like "short sleeper" and "long sleeper" exist because sleep has cycles that alternate between deep and light sleep, and the number of cycles needed to feel rested differs by person. Some people need many cycles, while others are fine with fewer. What matters isn't the total time, but whether these cycles repeat properly in a way that suits you—if they do, your brain's fatigue and body's issues will improve regardless of total sleep time. So it's worth checking what sleep duration makes you feel best. It's recommended to keep a sleep log noting what time you went to bed, what time you woke up, and how you felt. The cycle from deep to light sleep typically ranges from 70 to 110 minutes, with quite a bit of individual variation. Many people assume it's a 60-minute cycle, but there's actually about a 10-minute range on either side. By tracking your own patterns, you can figure out whether 6 hours or 7-8 hours works best for you. Since sleep length varies by person, I recommend checking your own sleep cycle—devices like Apple Watch can help with this too. 【The Importance of Pajamas and Bedding】 Another important factor is pajamas. They're often overlooked, but should actually be chosen according to season. Many people wear hoodies or sweatshirts to sleep, but humans are surprisingly sensitive, and even slight constriction can cause stress on the body. This stress reaches the brain, making it feel uncomfortable, and the stress cycle keeps running even while you sleep. So it's important to wear something relaxing. Changing bedding by season matters too. In summer, choose materials that absorb sweat and dry quickly since you tend to sweat more. In winter, while you want warmth, if you get too hot, your body temperature rises and then drops suddenly—this can wake you up midway or create stress that prevents your brain from truly resting. So look for something that keeps you warm while still being breathable. Also, avoid wearing socks to bed. For comforters, rather than layering thick blankets in winter or using heavy ones in summer, it's better to use a single comforter that retains warm air appropriately for the season. If you want to sleep deeply and wake up refreshed, it's worth paying close attention to your bedding—focusing on temperature and humidity control, avoiding stuffiness, and choosing breathable materials that you switch out between spring/summer and fall/winter. 【How to Take a Bath】 Many people take a hot bath and go straight to bed, but this can actually cause the brain to work hard trying to lower body temperature, making it difficult to fall asleep. While taking a warm bath to warm your body is beneficial, it's best to fall asleep once your body temperature has dropped slightly—without getting so cool that you feel chilly. If you take a bath at around 40°C and your surface temperature rises by 0.5 to 1 degree, it takes about 30 minutes to an hour for that to come back down. So bath timing is actually very important for achieving deep sleep. 【Food Tips】 Food choices matter too. Eating can make you drowsy due to digestion, but it also puts strain on your stomach and intestines, so it's best to wait about 3 hours after eating before going to bed. During this time, it's good to consume foods containing ingredients that help relieve brain fatigue. That ingredient is called "imidazole peptide." Not many people have heard of it, but it's commonly found in chicken and has antioxidant properties that are said to help calm brain excitement. It's especially abundant in chicken breast, which is also a good source of protein for your skin—so eating chicken breast at dinner is a great choice. 【Tips for Waking Up】 How you wake up matters too. Sleeping and waking are a set—they go together. So it's good to set a fixed wake-up time as much as possible. Melatonin, the hormone that promotes sleep, decreases when you wake up and are exposed to light, then increases again after some time has passed, making you sleepy. So adjusting your light exposure is very important. When waking up, it's best to wake to light rather than sound. Waking up suddenly to vibration or sound can startle you, causing an abrupt shift in your brain's nervous system. Using devices with gentle vibrations or gradually brightening lights helps you wake up without unnecessary stress. 【Complete Darkness While Sleeping】 On the other hand, make sure to completely block out light while sleeping. Sleeping in complete darkness also helps reduce stress on the brain. There's an interesting study showing that sleeping in complete darkness can help prevent obesity. Comparing people who sleep in bright rooms versus completely dark rooms, those sleeping in darkness have lower obesity rates. When the brain is fatigued, it can lead to unnecessary appetite increases. So make it a habit to sleep in complete darkness, wake up gradually to increasing light, use light strategically to sleep soundly, and wake up feeling refreshed. 【In Conclusion】 Sleep really is one of the most important things. While many people focus on skincare or exercise to maintain healthy skin and overall health, sleep is actually the most fundamental factor. If you're not feeling well, taking medicine is important, but getting proper rest through sleep is essential too. However, simply lying down isn't enough—you need to make sure both your body and brain are truly resting. I hope you'll find what I discussed today helpful. Thank you for watching until the end today. Once you finish watching this video, please turn it off and get some good, restful sleep. See you in the next video—goodbye!
