Hello everyone, this is Tomomi Arata. Today I want to introduce five sheet mask habits that you should absolutely never do.
On this channel, I've covered many sheet masks and recommended some great products. But even if a product is good, if you use it incorrectly, it won't work properly—and it could even backfire. Looking at comments, I noticed some concerning habits, so today I'll share the wrong ways to use sheet masks. Please watch until the end.
【1】Using a sheet mask when your skin is irritated
Please never do this. The best thing about sheet masks is that they raise your skin's moisture level, giving your stratum corneum plenty of hydration for a radiant, clear look, and they help beauty ingredients penetrate deeply. That kind of extra care is fine, but using a sheet mask because you feel your skin condition is "off" and you want to give it a boost is actually a mistake.
It's fine to use one when your skin is just sensitive or a bit dry, but if you have a lot of acne breakouts or itchiness, applying a sheet mask can actually irritate your skin further. If you only have one or two pimples, that's okay, but if breakouts cover your whole face, the basic rule is: don't touch it.
Of course, there are sheet masks designed to be gentle enough for sensitive skin (like Curél, for example). But these aren't meant to be used when your skin is severely irritated—they're meant for people with sensitive skin to use regularly, to help prevent skin from becoming more sensitive. If your skin is red, stinging, or itchy, please never use a sheet mask at that time.
【2】Warming or cooling the sheet mask to change its temperature
I often hear that chilling a sheet mask feels refreshing, or that warming it up opens your pores. I understand the appeal—wanting a cool sheet mask when your face gets sweaty under a mask in summer, or wanting a warm one to improve blood flow when your face feels cold in winter.
However, cosmetics need to be stored at the right temperature. If the temperature gets too high or too low, the product's intended function can be compromised. Cosmetics are normally formulated to perform best at room temperature. If you just want that pleasant sensation, that's fine, but if you want the sheet mask's ingredients to work at their best, you shouldn't intentionally change the temperature.
Of course, this doesn't apply to products the manufacturer specifically recommends refrigerating. But intentionally warming or cooling products that aren't meant for that is essentially pointless, and could even degrade the ingredients—so please avoid doing that.
【3】Using a sheet mask in the bath
I've mentioned this before, but while it might seem like your pores open up and absorption improves in the bath, the truth is you're actually sweating while bathing. If you apply a sheet mask while sweating, the sweat—rather than the mask's serum—becomes the base layer, preventing proper absorption.
Using a sheet mask after your bath, once you've wiped off your sweat, is fine. But using one in the bath while still sweating isn't just ineffective—the sweat actively interferes with proper absorption. So it's best to use sheet masks after your bath, not during it.
【4】Being stingy with sheet masks
You might wonder what this means. Broadly speaking, there are two types of sheet masks: individually packaged serum-type masks (often found in department store cosmetics, a bit pricier, one per pack), and bulk packs containing many sheets.
Some people save bulk packs for "special occasions" and rarely use them, but this isn't a good idea. With bulk packs, repeatedly opening the pouch, taking out a sheet with a spatula, and resealing it can cause oxidation. Ingredients like vitamin C inside can lose their effectiveness once oxidized.
Saving individually packaged masks for special occasions isn't necessarily bad, but even those will degrade if left unused for too long. Rather than saving them preciously, use them regularly—especially bulk pouch-type masks, which should be used up quickly once opened.
Of course, antioxidants and preservatives are added to minimize skin irritation to some degree, but cosmetics that have been opened and left for a long time will generally still degrade. So instead of buying huge bulk packs, choose an amount you can realistically use up quickly, and don't be stingy—use them promptly.
【5】Leaving a sheet mask on for too long
I always mention this, but leaving a mask on longer doesn't mean better absorption—that's a misconception. Just like how your fingers get wrinkly if soaked in water too long, when your skin becomes "waterlogged" like that, important barrier components like ceramides and natural moisturizing factors (NMF) start to leach out. Please always follow the manufacturer's recommended time, typically 5 to 10 minutes.
Finally, here's one more point that isn't exactly a "wrong" way to use sheet masks, but is often misunderstood. I often see comments saying "using a sheet mask every day will damage your skin, so you should stop," but this isn't necessarily true. Using one daily doesn't inherently harm your skin.
The most important factor with sheet masks is the duration of a single application—not the cumulative time over multiple uses. If you leave a mask on for over 10 minutes in one sitting, your skin may become waterlogged as I mentioned. But using a mask once in the morning and once at night, with time in between, won't cause that kind of waterlogging. As long as you're not overdoing it, using a sheet mask daily isn't a problem.
However, when doing so, please keep in mind the five points I covered today:
1. Don't use it when your skin is irritated
2. Manage the temperature (don't intentionally warm or cool it)
3. Don't use it in the bath
4. Don't be stingy—use it up promptly
5. Follow the recommended application time
As long as you follow these five rules, using a sheet mask every day is perfectly fine. If you're already a daily user, rest assured and just keep these five points in mind.
Sheet masks are a wonderfully easy way to add moisture to your skin, and having that hydration in your stratum corneum instantly boosts your skin's radiance. But using them incorrectly can lead to disappointing results, so please use this as a reference for using them the right way.
How was that? On this channel, I explain beauty and health topics in an easy-to-understand way like this. If you haven't subscribed yet, please consider subscribing.
