Hello everyone. I'm Arata Tomori, an internal medicine and dermatologist. Today I'd like to talk in detail about why I take collagen, so please watch until the end. Many people say things like "my skin feels plump the next day after eating collagen-rich foods" or "my skin feels moisturized." To put it bluntly, that's a misconception. You might then wonder, "Why do you take collagen if it doesn't work that way?" The answer lies in understanding what type of collagen to consume, which is exactly what I'll explain today. First, why do we need collagen? Most people associate it with healthy-looking skin, but collagen is actually essential not just for skin, but for blood vessels, eyes, and virtually every organ throughout the body. Foods commonly thought to be rich in collagen include pig's feet and chicken skin. However, even if you eat these foods, it's actually very difficult for the collagen to be properly absorbed and delivered to where you want it. This is because collagen is a protein—a chain of amino acids—and unless it's broken down into small enough pieces in your body, consuming it has little effect. In other words, eating collagen-rich foods does not necessarily mean you're effectively absorbing collagen. Since collagen is needed not only in the skin but also in blood vessels, nails, hair, and eyes, it is highly recommended for anyone interested in anti-aging and long-term health. So what kind of collagen do I take? I take "collagen peptides." The difference between collagen peptides and regular collagen is that collagen peptides are collagen that has been pre-broken down into smaller peptide units—even smaller than amino acids—making them easier to absorb. I take these in powder or supplement form. Collagen peptides have been studied by companies such as Shiseido and FANCL, and numerous research papers have confirmed their effectiveness. For example, a study by Nitta Gelatin involving Japanese women showed that taking 5g of collagen peptides daily for 8 weeks led to significant improvements in skin moisture, elasticity, and texture. Similar findings have been reported by research institutions in the United States and South Korea. Since around 2015–2016, it has become well established that collagen peptides—as opposed to regular collagen—can improve skin hydration and address dryness and rough skin texture. More recently, an even more groundbreaking discovery has come to light. Collagen naturally exists in our bodies, but it decreases with age due to damage from UV radiation, chronic inflammation, and stress. Our bodies do have a mechanism to collect damaged collagen and recycle it into new collagen, but this ability gradually declines from around our 20s. In 2018, FANCL studied the receptors involved in collagen recycling. Three receptors were already known to play a role: DDR2, integrin β1, and Endo180. FANCL investigated which of these was most critical for collagen recovery and production. The results showed that when DDR2 was inactivated, collagen production declined the most, identifying DDR2 as the most important receptor for collagen regeneration. This finding was also presented at the Japanese Society for Aging Skin Science. This meant that activating DDR2 could not only increase skin moisture levels but also promote collagen production and improve skin elasticity. Then, in March 2021, FANCL announced at a pharmacology conference the discovery of a compound that stimulates DDR2: "isoquercitrin." Isoquercitrin is a plant flavonoid—a compound known for its strong antioxidant properties—with a sugar molecule attached. When this compound activates the DDR2 receptor in fibroblasts, it accelerates the collection of damaged collagen and promotes the reconstruction of stronger, more resilient collagen. This means that the deterioration in collagen quality that comes with aging can potentially be counteracted. Additionally, FANCL has patented a specific method of breaking down collagen peptides: cutting the collagen chain at glycine residues, which appear at every third position in the amino acid sequence. This produces peptides that are more efficiently absorbed than those cut at other positions. In summary, FANCL's collagen peptide product features two key innovations: (1) a proprietary peptide fragmentation method that enhances absorption, and (2) the inclusion of isoquercitrin to activate DDR2 receptors and promote collagen regeneration—addressing both the intake and recycling of collagen. Personally, I take this in both powder form and as a jelly-type snack for when I'm slightly hungry. Beyond FANCL, collagen peptides are also available from many other brands, including Shiseido. If you want to effectively consume collagen, always make sure the product is labeled as "collagen peptide," "hydrolyzed collagen," or "low-molecular-weight collagen"—anything indicating that the collagen has been broken down into smaller molecules. Regular collagen is not sufficient. My general philosophy is to get nutrients from food first and supplement only what's lacking. However, collagen peptides are uniquely difficult to obtain through diet alone, so I make an exception and take them as a supplement. Whether you're looking to improve skin hydration, firmness, and elasticity, or support the health of your blood vessels, eyes, and brain, collagen peptides are worth considering—not just for women, but also for men concerned about conditions like arteriosclerosis.
