Hello everyone, I'm Arata Tomori, an internal medicine and dermatologist. On October 8th, a magnitude 5-plus earthquake struck mainly in Tokyo and Saitama — the first of such intensity in about 10 years, and the strongest since the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.
At around 10:30 that night, after putting my children to bed and finishing some work, I had just stepped out of the bath when everything started shaking. The earthquake alert went off and it brought back vivid memories of 10 years ago — it was truly frightening. It reminded me how important it is to regularly review your emergency preparedness supplies.
So today, I'd like to introduce items that are often overlooked in emergency kits — specifically those related to beauty and personal health. Our household already has food stockpiles, emergency blankets, and portable toilets, but going without something to clean your body becomes very difficult after 2 or 3 days, especially when water and electricity are cut off. With that in mind, here are 13 beauty and wellness items I recommend including in your disaster preparedness kit.
---
**① Curel Skincare Sheet**
Contains pseudo-ceramide and is safe for both face and body. A great first-response item when you have no access to water.
**② Body Wet Stick Towel**
A large-format wet towel (similar to a warm towel at a restaurant) that can cover your entire body. It's alcohol-free, fragrance-free, and contains Lipidure (moisturizing ingredient) and Gomono-han extract (anti-inflammatory). It can even be warmed in a microwave, making it comfortable to use even in cold conditions when no bath is available.
**③ MUJI No-Rinse Shampoo**
A spray-type dry shampoo that you simply spray onto your hair and wipe off. Contains Lipidure, persimmon tannin (deodorizing), lemon juice, bergamot, and essential oils that leave hair feeling fresh and clean.
**④ Perfect Beauty Moist Diane Dry Shampoo**
Features a stronger, fresh shampoo-like scent and is great for taming bangs or refreshing sweaty hair. Since it can also be used in everyday life (e.g., for quick styling or after wearing a hat), it's easy to incorporate into a rolling stockpile system.
**⑤ Pyuora Tooth Cleaning Sheet**
A sheet-type oral care product that requires no water. Originally designed for disaster use, it's also handy during travel or on-the-go situations.
**⑥ Curel Moisture Spray (Travel Size)**
Works as a toner substitute for both face and body. After wiping down with a cleansing sheet, a quick spritz of this helps maintain moisture — one bottle goes a long way.
**⑦ All-in-One Skincare Product**
After the 2011 earthquake, I visited an evacuation shelter in Sendai as part of a L'Oréal initiative. The women there told me, "Just having good skin makes such a difference in how we feel day to day." Stocking your usual skincare items — even all-in-one products for simplicity — can be a powerful way to maintain emotional well-being during a crisis.
**⑧ La Roche-Posay UV Idea Protection BB Cream**
Sun protection is important even during evacuations. Choosing a formula that can be removed with soap or cleansing sheets is especially practical.
**⑨ Sweets Sweets Eyebrow Wax**
At the evacuation shelter, eyebrow products were among the most sought-after items. Many people mentioned that without eyebrows, they didn't feel like themselves. Having an affordable eyebrow product in your kit in your own color can make a big difference to your confidence.
**⑩ Rohto Lip The Color Tint Cream**
Just like eyebrows, a touch of lip color can brighten your complexion and lift your spirits. This tint also contains oil treatment to prevent dryness. An affordable option is perfectly sufficient.
**⑪ Vitamin A + D Supplement (Reactive Doctor Supplement)**
Vitamin A supports mucous membrane repair (important for preventing colds), while Vitamin D helps regulate immune function. Both are essential for maintaining health during a disaster.
**⑫ Umami Supplement (Powdered Soup Type)**
Contains digestive dextrin (a soluble dietary fiber) that feeds beneficial gut bacteria. It's a comforting warm drink that also helps prevent the constipation that often occurs when physical activity is limited and dietary fiber is scarce.
**⑬ Kale Green Juice Stick**
Rich in potassium and calcium. When mixed with milk or apple juice, even children will drink it — making it an easy way to address vegetable deficiency during evacuation.

The key takeaway is to use a "rolling stockpile" approach — keep extras of the things you already use daily and rotate them. This way, your emergency supplies never go to waste, and you reduce the stress of adapting to unfamiliar products in an already difficult situation.
Disasters can strike at any time. The best strategy is to stay prepared. I hope this video gives you some useful ideas. Thank you so much for watching until the end. See you in the next video. Goodbye!
