Hello everyone, this is Arata Tomori. I think a lot of people are concerned about their pores. Some of you have tried various things like sebaceous plug approaches or blackhead treatments, but nothing seems to really work. Actually, the cause might not be clogging at all—it might be sebum that has turned 'bad' (oxidized/degraded sebum). So today's video is for people whose pores are open, who also have redness, and who seem to have 'inner dryness.' I'll explain why your skin can feel a bit dry even though you have a lot of sebum, and why your pore care isn't improving things no matter how hard you try, along with the causes and the products to address them. So if you're concerned about pores, ruddy complexion, or inner dryness, please watch until the end. Now, let's get right into it. That stickiness, open pores, redness, yet dryness—the cause is definitely sebum that has turned 'bad' (oxidized). Think about it: there are people with a lot of sebum whose skin still looks radiant and glowing. But on the other hand, there are people who are equally shiny but look somewhat red and rough, almost like their skin is peeling. What's the difference? Even though both have the same amount of sebum, what's different? In the past, it was thought that the ability to retain moisture in the skin was low—so people with inner dryness were thought to be producing oil because their skin was dry. But it turns out that's not quite right. What's actually happening is that it's not a lack of moisture—the oil itself was 'bad.' But you might ask, why do some people with a lot of sebum not experience dryness? That's because it's not about quantity, but quality. Sebum contains many different components, and among them are free fatty acids—including oleic acid—which get reabsorbed into the skin and are known to damage the skin's barrier function. Even with a lot of sebum, if these free fatty acids are low, the sebum acts like a natural cream, giving skin a lovely glow. But if these free fatty acids, like oleic acid, increase, instead of being a natural cream, they damage the skin barrier and cause dryness. Damaging the barrier function means inflammation occurs in the skin, leading to redness, rough-looking skin, and moisture loss leading to dryness. If someone with this condition uses products that stop sebum production entirely, while stopping sebum might sound good, it ultimately leads to more dryness. So instead of reducing the amount, it's important to use products that remove only the 'bad' sebum, or that prevent the formation of bad sebum in the first place. For example, in cosmetic dermatology, one approach is to prescribe medication that suppresses sebum production overall—that's isotretinoin. It's a medication given to people with severe acne. People with severe acne often have quite red faces—partly due to inflammation from the acne itself, but people prone to acne also tend to have a lot of this 'bad' sebum, giving their face a reddish-brown tone. But when isotretinoin significantly suppresses sebum, the skin gains remarkable clarity—not because the acne redness disappeared, but because the sebum that was damaging the skin barrier decreased, reducing inflammation and giving the face a brighter, more toned-up appearance. However, I wouldn't recommend taking isotretinoin just because you're concerned about pores or ruddy complexion. So the key point is how to remove free fatty acids or inflammation-causing sebum using cosmetic products instead. Recently, there have been quite a few products that feature technology specifically designed to remove only the sebum that destroys barrier function and causes skin inflammation. So in the second half, I'll introduce these products. Let's start with cleansing products. Washing away impurities is really important, right? First up is the Perfect One Focus Smooth Cleansing Balm. This is popular as a cleansing balm for pore care, but it doesn't just dissolve sebaceous plugs—it also contains an ingredient that adsorbs 'bad' sebum. That ingredient is called hydroxyapatite. There's data showing that this hydroxyapatite adsorbs only the 'bad' sebum, so this cleanser leaves necessary sebum in place while removing the sebum that causes skin inflammation. Since it's a cleanser, it removes makeup thoroughly too, but since not all sebum is bad, it removes makeup oil and bad sebum while leaving the moisturizing sebum behind—this selectivity is truly impressive. After cleansing comes face washing, right? That's this: Cle De Peau by Astalift's Creamy Clear Foam. Wait, this is the 'Cresque' brand by Astalift—a brand for sensitive skin. People with sensitive skin tend to have more 'bad' sebum, and Astalift discovered that this was damaging the skin barrier function. Even more alarmingly, they found that this 'bad' sebum itself was inhibiting ceramide synthesis. Isn't that even scarier? Not only does it damage barrier function and cause inflammation, but it also reduces ceramide synthesis, which is responsible for skin's moisture retention—so inner dryness progresses even further. That's why Astalift also focused on selectively removing this 'bad' sebum, incorporating their own unique ingredients. It's somewhat similar to hydroxyapatite, but they use a cleansing agent containing spherical abrasive particles. Perhaps because spherical particles have good adsorption properties, they selected spherical cleansing agents that thoroughly adsorb the bad sebum that damages barrier function. Because these particles are fine, the cleanser reaches deep into the pores, reducing inflammation around the pores as well. Use cleansing balm when you're wearing makeup. And on mornings when you're not wearing makeup but wake up feeling a bit greasy, that's when you should use this type of face wash—I think that's the key point. After washing, of course, you need to moisturize your skin. That's where I recommend Kanebo's Skin Harmonizer and Skin Conditioner. The Skin Harmonizer lotion increases skin moisture content like a regular toner, but what's interesting is that it has a trap function that prevents 'bad' sebum from being reabsorbed into the skin. In other words, it creates a film that prevents sebum from getting into the skin even when it's produced. Of course, you can use this all over your face, but applying it specifically to areas where pore redness is a concern—like the T-zone or chin—not only boosts moisturizing power but also somehow reduces redness because the sebum isn't reabsorbed. I often recommend this to patients with inner dryness and redness, and many report that their redness has noticeably decreased. I remember raving about this product when it came out about two years ago too—but essentially, it only suppressed reabsorption of sebum without stopping sebum production itself. This time, the new cream contains an ingredient that prevents sebum from turning 'bad' in the first place. By using these two products together, even if 'bad' sebum is produced, it won't be reabsorbed into the skin, and this cream provides proper moisturizing without adding excess oil. Despite having a light texture, the cream prevents sebum from turning bad—so this completes your moisturizing routine. By thoroughly washing away and preventing the formation of bad sebum, and even if it does form, preventing its absorption into the skin—by taking these steps, you can care for the 'bad' sebum that damages skin barrier function, causes pore inflammation, and is the root cause of inner dryness. How was that? I think quite a few of you are concerned about open pores, pore redness, and inner dryness, so instead of choosing products that simply suppress sebum, try choosing products designed to remove 'bad' sebum specifically. I think this will improve not just pore redness but also overall skin dullness. If you're concerned about these issues, please check out today's product lineup. So, how was today's video? It might have been a bit niche, but if you're struggling with pore redness, ruddy complexion, or inner dryness, please use this as a reference. Thank you for watching until the end today. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
