Today I'd like to introduce my top 3 recommended new high-end department store cosmetic ("depakos") toners for spring. In my previous two videos, I covered recommendations for budget and drugstore cosmetics, so this time I'm focusing on the more premium depakos category. The biggest difference between budget, drugstore, and department store cosmetics is that depakos products pack each brand's latest research and technology into a single bottle. Because companies invest the most in R&D for these lines, they contain the newest ingredients—and while the price reflects that, the expectations for skin benefits are extremely high. Many ingredients are exclusive to department store cosmetics. With that in mind, let's dive in. ■ #1: Lancôme Clarifique Dual Essence Water First up is the product I'd call my absolute favorite toner for spring/summer 2020: Lancôme's Clarifique Dual Essence Water. As you can see, the bottle is almost empty—I love it so much that I've already bought a second one! The keyword for this toner is "enzymes." Enzymes are essential for making our cells function, and they play a crucial role in the skin as well. Lancôme has placed great emphasis on "enzyme science" and has conducted deep research in this area. For example, enzymes are involved in transferring melanin synthesis to skin cells, promoting cell turnover by expelling old cells, and stimulating the production of natural moisturizing factors (NMF)—all of which are related to healthy, beautiful skin. Lancôme's research has worked to identify each of these enzymes and determine which ingredients best support their activity. The result of this enzyme research is an ingredient called Beech Bud Extract, found in Clarifique. Specifically, it activates enzymes called Kallikrein-7 and Kallikrein-5 in the stratum corneum to regulate skin cell turnover, and it activates enzymes that promote the production of NMF, which supports the skin's barrier function. By activating these enzymes via Beech Bud Extract, cell turnover is accelerated—helping to expel melanin-containing cells—and more NMF is produced, which can significantly improve dry skin and boost moisture retention. This toner also contains an oil component. If you shake the bottle, you'll notice fine bubbles—this is because oil is emulsified within the water-based formula. It doesn't feel greasy at all; instead, it provides hydration from within while forming a light protective film on the surface. It's ideal for those with dry skin or anyone looking to add brightening care as UV rays grow stronger in the coming months. ■ #2: KANEBO GP Conditioning Serum Moisturizing Next is KANEBO's GP Conditioning Serum Moisturizing. Although labeled as a serum, it has a lotion-like texture, so think of it as a toner packed with active beauty ingredients. The keyword here is "autophagy"—the protein-degradation and recycling system for which Professor Yoshinori Ohsumi of the Tokyo Institute of Technology was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2016. KANEBO collaborated with Professor Tamotsu Yoshimori of Osaka University, who had been researching autophagy alongside Professor Ohsumi, and together they made a world-first discovery: autophagy occurs in living skin cells. The melanin pigment that causes age spots exists in a clumped state packed inside protein sacs called melanosomes. If autophagy doesn't function properly, these protein sacs aren't broken down, and melanin is delivered to skin cells as a dense clump—appearing as a visible dark spot. However, when autophagy works correctly, the protein sacs are broken down, dispersing the melanin into tiny particles, making spots less visible and less likely to form. Building on this research, KANEBO developed a proprietary ingredient called "GP Cycle Complex," a combination of rosemary extract and phytosphingosine, which activates autophagy in skin cells. The inclusion of GP Cycle Complex makes it highly likely to boost skin autophagy, so it's a product I'd recommend for anyone concerned about age spots or noticing that their spots are getting darker. ■ #3: Dior Capture Totale Cell Energy Lotion The third recommendation is Dior's Capture Totale Cell Energy Lotion. The keyword for Dior is "stem cells." Stem cells are the source of all tissues in the body—cells with the potential to become anything. Dior has been focused on stem cells since 1990, conducting nearly 30 years of research. Most recently, they announced the launch of a joint research initiative with the Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA) at Kyoto University, led by Professor Shinya Yamanaka, who won the Nobel Prize for his iPS cell research. In that joint research, comparing skin cells from 20-year-old and 40-year-old donors revealed that while the number of stem cells remains unchanged, the "cellular activity"—the energy capacity of those cells—decreases by as much as 50%. Since the number of cells doesn't decline, the key is to boost cellular activity, and for that purpose Dior developed a proprietary ingredient called Floral Complex. In addition to Floral Complex, this toner contains Ascorbyl Glucoside—a water-soluble vitamin C derivative known for its high stability and sustained efficacy—as well as Niacinamide, which has recognized anti-wrinkle and skin-brightening benefits. It combines cutting-edge technology with well-established vitamin actives, making it a toner you can expect to deliver both moisturization and brightening effects. ■ Conclusion So, what did you think? Department store cosmetics are truly remarkable, aren't they? Each brand pours its most advanced technology into these products, often collaborating with leading research institutions, and the results are condensed into every bottle. Of course, not every technology may reproduce perfectly on actual skin, but there's something inspiring and exciting about using the most cutting-edge products available. That sense of possibility and luxury is, I believe, the true appeal of depakos. When you use a depakos product, I encourage you to embrace that excitement—the feeling of giving your skin the very best—because that positive mindset may just enhance the results even further. While it would be ideal to visit a department store counter to experience the scent and texture in person, that's a bit difficult right now.
