Hello everyone, I'm Arata Tomori, a physician YouTuber.
The state of emergency has been extended, centering on major cities. I think many of you are feeling anxious, lonely, or in other words, stressed.
This is being treated as a serious problem in the medical field as well. For example, elderly people who keep catching only anxiety-inducing information from various media end up falling into severe depression, and it has also become a problem that their dementia progresses.
Of course, this isn't just a problem for the elderly. It's often the case that whenever humans feel anxious, they tend to fall into a depressive state.
So today, amid this coronavirus pandemic, I'd like to introduce 5 ways to refresh your COVID-fatigued brain.
First, being kind to others.
Many of you might think, "Kind to others? That's a way to refresh myself?" But it's actually scientifically recognized that elderly people who actively engage in volunteer activities show improved cognitive function in the brain—meaning dementia is less likely to occur.
Why is this? When you're being kind to someone, the brain's reward system is stimulated. This reward system is the area that, when stimulated, makes you feel happy, joyful, or good—basically, it's the area that lifts your mood.
When you're kind to others, this area gets stimulated, and scientifically it's known that the same kind of excitement occurs as when you receive money from someone.
So being kind to others is actually a behavior that makes yourself happier and more joyful. Isn't that wonderful?
When we feel anxious or irritated, we tend to want to attack others, but this is actually hugely detrimental to ourselves. On the contrary, being kind to others can refresh your brain and relieve anxiety. So when you feel anxious or down, try actively being kind to others.
Second, exercising.
Exercise, of course, improves the function of the cardiovascular system and strengthens the body itself, but it actually has a huge benefit for refreshing the brain too.
It's known that people with a higher "fitness level"—meaning a habit of exercising—have a larger brain volume, and it's also known that cognitive ability increases in the elderly.
However, the key point about exercise is that it's not simply a matter of exercising blindly. Rather than running hard for a long time, it's better to do walking at a pace where you can still hold a conversation, with your heart rate slightly elevated.
Of course, during the state of emergency, we're told to refrain from non-essential outings, but walking alone in a park or similar place carries quite a low risk of infection. So doing light walking in a green area as much as possible will help refresh your brain and also reduce stress, so please give it a try.
Third, eating well.
Actually, under this state of emergency, many people's eating habits and balance have changed. That's because, until now, going to school or work meant you had to wake up at a proper time and eat breakfast, and eat lunch too. Of course, there's no particular need to eat three meals a day, but there was a cycle of eating meals properly at fixed times. Now, staying at home, people tend to eat in a sloppy, unstructured way.
This can cause obesity, and also, because the satiety center is constantly stimulated, appetite can increase further. Eating well means first properly maintaining your own eating habits.
If you're a one-meal-a-day person, one meal is fine. If you're someone who feels unwell without three solid meals, then make sure to eat three meals at fixed times.
As for what to eat, a study of 20,000 registrants in the UK Biobank found that people who eat grains high in dietary fiber have a larger volume in the brain's hippocampus, the area that enhances cognitive function.
Conversely, it's known that people who eat foods high in sugar or high in saturated fatty acids—found in animal fats such as meat—show reduced formation of synapses, the neural connections in the brain. This can lead to reduced cognitive function and also anxiety due to reduced communication within the brain.
So try to eat plenty of high-fiber grains, vegetables, and fruits, while reducing sugar and animal fats.
Fourth, maintaining social connections.
I think everyone understands all too well that loneliness really lowers your mood. This loneliness, regardless of age, gender, or nationality, is known to increase mortality rates.
Having social connections excites the brain's reward system, as I mentioned earlier. Conversely, when you become lonely, there are fewer things that feel enjoyable, and your mood keeps declining more and more. So preventing social isolation is actually very important from a public health perspective too.
So how can we maintain these social connections in the current situation? Have you heard of the SNS app called Clubhouse recently? What I think is wonderful about this tool during this time is that you can quickly connect with people—and it's an app where you can actually have conversations.
For those unfamiliar with it, let me briefly explain: it's an invite-only app where you can essentially listen in on people chatting, like eavesdropping on a casual conversation—not peeking, but listening in.
So you can join in on conversations where various people are talking, and someone might say "Oh, so-and-so has joined, want to talk together?" and you can actually end up talking.
Nowadays, casual chit-chat—which is the most important part of social connection—has become less common, and I think this is a big reason leading to loneliness.
Right now this app is very popular among young people and company executives, but as it spreads more and more to various people, especially the elderly and those living alone, I think social connections can be created in various places, and I really understand why this app is becoming popular.
Also, recently there are things like online communities where you can connect over the internet—not physically connected, not meeting directly, but connecting online. So please use things like that, and try to reach out to people whenever you feel anxious.
Fifth and finally, learning something new.
Having a new language or a new hobby increases the areas of excitement in the brain.
For example, there's data showing that elderly people who did visual-motor activities like juggling showed improved cognitive function and improved mood disorders.
So when people learn something new or get excited about something new, this anxiety gets resolved.
This might come across a bit like a sales pitch on my part, but I do think that discovering something new on YouTube, or joining something new like an online community and learning there, is actually important during times like these.
With that in mind, I've actually launched something called "Weekly Arata Tomori," a site/tool where you can exchange audio, video, and Slack-like messages.
It does come with a monthly fee, but if you're feeling anxious these days, or if you want new encounters and new learning, I'll put the link in the description, so please check out "Weekly Arata Tomori."
To summarize: when you're feeling very anxious, be kind to others. Get moderate exercise, eat a balanced diet, and try to connect with others as much as possible—this applies whether online or offline. Especially now, since offline isn't really an option, try making use of online connections. And finally, try to gain new learning.
This doesn't have to be just formal study. For example, looking into cameras, or researching beauty topics, or anything you find enjoyable—actively go get some new learning that excites you.
How was that? This show is a channel where I talk about beauty and health topics in an easy-to-understand way for everyone. As I briefly mentioned, I've also launched a video media platform called "Weekly Arata Tomori" where we can interact with each other, so please check it out if you're interested.
See you in the next video. Goodbye.
