超ロングセラー伝説のデパコス化粧水を解説します

皆さんこんにちは。内科・皮膚科医の友利新です。今日は伝説のデパコスシリーズ第2弾をお届けします。前回も大変好評をいただき、ロングセラーで売れ続けているデパコスを2つご紹介しました。イプサさんとコスメデコルテさんのマイクロリポソームですね。その回を受けて、他のロングセラーデパコスも取り上げてほしいというリクエストをいただきましたので、今日も2つご紹介したいと思います。 早速1つ目がこちら、SK-IIフェイシャルトリートメントエッセンスです。デパコスにあまり興味がない方でも、SK-IIという名前は一度は聞いたことがあるのではないでしょうか。SK-IIを代表する化粧水で、見た目は透明というよりも、よく見ると少し黄みがかった色をしています。 私はデパコスには必ず「秘伝のタレ」が入っていると申し上げていますが、SK-IIの秘伝のタレはもちろん皆さんご存知の「ピテラ」です。ピテラとは一体何かというと、成分表記には「ガラクトミセス培養液」と記載されています。ガラクトミセスは酵母の一種で、これを培養したときに得られる液体がガラクトミセス培養液です。 ガラクトミセスは現在約12種類が確認されており、原料として市販もされています。そのため、「SK-IIと同じ成分が入っている」として、ガラクトミセス培養液配合の化粧水を紹介している動画も見かけます。しかしこれは、「木を見て森を見ず」という言葉が当てはまる状況かもしれません。 酵母は味噌や醤油の製造にも使われるように、生きている生物です。そのため、同じ種類の酵母であっても、培養条件によって全く異なる性質のものが生まれます。人間も同じで、同じ人間でも生活環境や習慣が違えば、性格や体格が変わりますよね。ガラクトミセスも全く同様で、培養条件によって全く異なる成分が生成されます。SK-IIのピテラは、その中でも特殊な効果・効能を持つ固有のガラクトミセス培養液なのです。 しかも、SK-IIのピテラの培養条件（温度や環境など）は企業秘密で、社内でもごく一部の人しか知らないトップシークレットだそうです。つまり、他の製品にガラクトミセス培養液が入っていても、それがピテラと同じかどうかはわかりません。恐らく、全く別物と考えるべきでしょう。 では、このピテラにはどのような作用が期待できるのでしょうか。SK-IIさんがピテラについて徹底的に研究していることは非常に注目に値します。英語の論文をもとにかみ砕いてお話しすると、人間のあらゆる細胞には「芳香族炭化水素受容体（AHR）」というスイッチのような受容体が存在します。このスイッチは、何が押すかによって、肌に良いシグナルが送られるか、悪いシグナルが送られるかが決まります。 例えば、ダイオキシンのような化学物質がAHRを刺激すると、肌に炎症を引き起こすシグナルが発生します。一方、ポリフェノールなどがAHRを刺激すると、肌に良いシグナルが送られます。ピテラがAHRを刺激すると、肌のバリア機能を強化する「フィラグリン」という成分の生成が促されることが、正式な論文で証明されています。これは他のガラクトミセス培養液では確認されていない効果です。 さらに、ピテラはAHRを介して、炎症性サイトカイン（IL-6やIL-4など）の産生を抑制することも明らかになっています。つまり、バリア機能を担うフィラグリンを増やしながら、炎症シグナルを抑えるという二重の働きをするのです。加えて、ピテラがAHRに結合することで、細胞内の「長寿遺伝子」のスイッチが入ることも報告されています。 SK-IIは「肌が乱れたときに透明感を生む化粧水」として知られており、以前は桃井かおりさん、現在は綾瀬はるかさんがCMに出演されていますが、まさにその謳い文句通り、ピテラには皮膚のバリア機能を高め、炎症を抑え、透明感を引き出すという効果が科学的に裏付けられています。 酵母由来の成分ということもあり、独特の香りがありますが、これは好みが分かれるかもしれません。またピテラはSK-IIの全製品に配合されており、その代表格がこのフェイシャルトリートメントエッセンスです。名前が同じでも全く異なる成分であることを理解した上で、きちんとしたデータに裏付けられたピテラを安心してお使いいただけるかと思います。それがロングセラーの理由でもあるでしょう。 続いての伝説のデパコスはこちら、アルビオン薬用スキンコンディショナーエッセンシャル、通称「スキコン」です。こちらも日本を代表するロングセラー化粧水で、解説してほしいというご要望を多くいただいていました。 スキコンはなんと1974年発売。私（1978年生まれ）よりも年上のデパコスで、約50年にわたるロングセラーです。こちらは医薬部外品で、有効成分はグリチルリチン酸。炎症を抑える効果が期待できる成分です。ただし、グリチルリチン酸だけなら他にも多く配合されている製品があります。 スキコンの秘伝のタレは「ハトムギエキス」です。市場にはハトムギ化粧水が数多く存在しますが、アルビオンのスキコンに使われているハトムギは北海道産です。ハトムギはもともと亜熱帯地域に生息する植物ですが、あえて冷涼な北海道で栽培することで、過酷な環境下に置かれたハトムギが持つ高い有効成分を引き出せると考えられています。またオーガニック栽培であり、海外産が多いハトムギにおいて国産・有機というのは安心材料です。 抽出方法にもこだわりがあります。一般的には圧搾（物理的に潰して抽出）する方法が用いられますが、スキコンのハトムギはポップコーンのように加熱・爆発させて抽出することで、成分を壊さずに純粋に取り出しています。 また、スキコンは他のハトムギ化粧水に比べて明らかに白濁しているのが特徴です。この白濁の正体は油分です。1974年の発売当時、油分の品質が悪く「油焼け」や肌荒れの原因になることが多かった時代に、アルビオンは良質な油にこだわって開発を行いました。アルビオンのスキンケアでは「洗顔後まず乳液を塗る」というステップが推奨されていますが、これは油分で肌のバリア機能を整え、続くスキンケアの浸透を高めるためです。スキコンはその考え方を体現した処方で、水分と油分をバランスよく配合し、1本でしっかりと肌をケアできるよう設計されています。 グリチルリチン酸による抗炎症作用、ハトムギエキスの肌荒れ抑制作用、そして油分と水分のバランスにより、肌が揺らぎやすい方に特に適した化粧水です。 ただし残念な点として、アルビオン独自のハトムギエキスに関する科学的データがまだ十分に公表されていないため、他のハトムギエキスとの違いを明確に示す論文等が今後出てくることを期待しています。 一方で、業界紙「wwwbeauty」のコロナ禍のヒット製品ランキングでスキコンが第3位に入ったことは注目に値します。「季節や環境の変化でコンディションが乱れがちな肌をみずみずしく健やかに整え、肌荒れや乾燥を防いで肌を引き締めるロングセラー化粧品。コロナ禍でも変わらず人気をキープし、営業再開後にまとめ買いに来るお客様も多かった」と紹介されています。外出が制限される中でもリピートが続いたという事実は、多くの使用者が実感として効果を感じている証拠ではないでしょうか。 今回ご紹介したSK-IIフェイシャルトリートメントエッセンスとアルビオンのスキコン、どちらも親子2代・3代で愛用しているという方も多い、まさに超ロングセラーの名品です。SK-IIはピテラの科学的検証を大学との共同研究でしっかり行い、アルビオンは長年にわたる使用者の体感に支えられています。どちらにも、ロングセラーたる確かな理由が秘められていると思います。 このチャンネルでは美容や健康についてわかりやすくお伝えしています。ぜひチャンネル登録よろしくお願いします。また次の動画でお会いしましょう。さようなら。

Hello everyone. I'm Tchia, a physician specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. Today I'm back with the second installment of my "Legendary Department Store Cosmetics" series. The first episode was very well received, and today I'll be introducing two more products that have remained consistent long-sellers. Following that episode, many of you requested that I cover additional iconic department store cosmetics, so let's dive right in. The first product is the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence. Even if you're not particularly interested in high-end cosmetics, chances are you've heard of SK-II. This is the brand's signature toner — slightly translucent with a faint yellowish tint. As I always say, every legendary department store cosmetic has its "secret sauce," and SK-II's is none other than Pitera. On the ingredient list, Pitera is listed as "Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate." Galactomyces is a type of yeast, and the liquid obtained from culturing it is called Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate. About 12 species of Galactomyces have been identified, and the raw material is commercially available. As a result, you may have seen videos online claiming that certain toners contain "the same ingredient as SK-II" because they include Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate. However, this is a classic case of missing the forest for the trees. Yeast is a living organism — just like the kind used in making miso or soy sauce. The same species of yeast can produce entirely different compounds depending on its cultivation conditions, just as people raised in different environments develop different personalities and physiques. SK-II's Pitera is a unique Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate with specific properties that arise only from SK-II's proprietary cultivation process — a process that is a closely guarded trade secret known to only a handful of people even within the company. Therefore, while other products may contain Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, they are almost certainly not the same as Pitera. So what can Pitera actually do? SK-II has conducted extensive scientific research on this. To summarize the findings from peer-reviewed literature: every human cell contains a receptor called the Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AHR), which functions like a switch. Whether this switch triggers a beneficial or harmful response depends on what activates it. For example, chemicals like dioxins can activate AHR in ways that cause skin inflammation. In contrast, polyphenols and, as research has shown, Pitera, activate AHR in a way that promotes good outcomes. Specifically, it has been demonstrated in published scientific papers that Pitera activates AHR to stimulate the production of filaggrin, a protein essential for maintaining the skin's barrier function. This has not been demonstrated for other Galactomyces Ferment Filtrates. Furthermore, Pitera's interaction with AHR suppresses the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and IL-4. In other words, Pitera simultaneously strengthens the skin barrier and reduces inflammation. Research has also shown that Pitera's binding to AHR activates longevity genes within cells. SK-II has long marketed its Facial Treatment Essence as a product that "gives the skin radiance when it's in disarray," and this claim is scientifically substantiated. Pitera is present in all SK-II products, making the Facial Treatment Essence its most iconic representative. The distinctive fermented scent may not appeal to everyone, but you can use this product with confidence, knowing it is backed by rigorous scientific evidence — and that is precisely why it has remained a best-seller for decades. The second legendary product is the Albion Medicated Skin Conditioner Essential, commonly known as "Skikon." This is another iconic Japanese toner, and I received many requests to cover it. Skikon was first launched in 1974 — making it older than I am (born in 1978) — and has been a best-seller for nearly 50 years. It is classified as a quasi-drug, with glycyrrhizic acid as its active ingredient, which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. However, glycyrrhizic acid alone is not unique to Skikon. Skikon's secret sauce is its Job's tears (Coix) extract. While many "Job's tears toners" exist on the market, Albion sources its Coix from Hokkaido, Japan. Job's tears typically grow in subtropical climates, so cultivating them in the cool climate of Hokkaido represents a challenging environment for the plant. It is believed that this stress may produce a more potent extract. The Coix used is also organically grown, which is noteworthy given that much of the world's supply is imported. Albion also uses a unique extraction method. Instead of conventional cold pressing, the seeds are rapidly heated and expanded — much like popcorn — to extract the active components without damaging them. Another distinctive feature of Skikon is its milky-white opacity, which sets it apart from most other toners. This opacity comes from oil. When Skikon was developed in the 1974, oils in cosmetics were often of poor quality and could cause "oil burns" or skin irritation. Albion was committed to using high-quality oils, and this philosophy is central to their skincare approach. Albion recommends applying their emulsion immediately after cleansing — before toner — because oil helps prepare the skin's barrier and enhances the absorption of subsequent products. Skikon embodies this philosophy by balancing oil and water in a single product, providing both hydration and a light lipid film that supports the skin barrier. With anti-inflammatory glycyrrhizic acid, skin-soothing Coix extract, and a carefully balanced oil-and-water formula, Skikon is especially suited for those with sensitive or reactive skin. One area for improvement is the lack of published scientific data specifically on Albion's proprietary Coix extract, which would help distinguish it from other Coix-based products on the market. I look forward to seeing that research in the future. That said, it is worth noting that Skikon ranked third in a sales ranking of hit products during the COVID-19 pandemic, published in the beauty industry trade journal "wwwbeauty." The publication noted that it was a "long-selling product that keeps skin moisturized, healthy, and firm even when affected by seasonal or environmental changes, with many customers coming to stock up once stores reopened." The fact that consumers continued to prioritize this product even when access to department stores was restricted speaks volumes about the satisfaction and loyalty it inspires. Both SK-II Facial Treatment Essence and Albion Skikon are products loved across generations — it's not uncommon to hear of families where mothers, daughters, and granddaughters all use the same product. SK-II backs its star ingredient with rigorous scientific research conducted in collaboration with universities, while Albion's Skikon has earned unwavering loyalty through decades of real-world results. Both products have earned their legendary status, and their secret sauces are very much real. On this channel, I share approachable insights on beauty and health.
