Hello everyone, I'm Toshiyoshi Tomi. Today I'd like to introduce five methods that I actually use to avoid fatigue.
"Sensei, you seem incredibly busy, but you're always energetic. Are you doing something special?" I get comments like this quite often. Friends I meet in person also ask, "You're raising children, working, doing YouTube with a really packed schedule, so why are you so energetic?" I'm asked this fairly frequently.
Of course, since I'm a doctor, I'd really like to say that I use secret medications or special IV infusions, but that's not the case. Rather, I practice methods that anyone can do—things that eliminate fatigue on the same day or prevent fatigue from occurring in the first place. I'd like to share these with you today. If you've been thinking "even though I sleep a lot, I'm still tired" or "I want to have more energy," please refer to these methods.
So let me immediately introduce what I do to avoid fatigue. The first method is "eating to only 80% fullness." You might think that's sudden, but eating, exercise, and sleep are the three major things that help heal fatigue. While sleep and exercise are important, I think diet is actually the biggest factor.
When people eat, they often think they need to consume various nutrients or eat well to be energetic. However, eating too much actually causes the body to spend a long time on digestion and leads to fatigue. Don't you sometimes get quite sleepy after eating, and then feel more tired afterward? You're energetic in the morning, but after lunch you're basically useless—this is often because you're eating too much. Unless you have a medical condition where you can't have empty stomach time or have been told to eat well, eating to about 80% fullness instead of completely full means digestion doesn't take long, there's no energy loss from digestion, and you can stay flat throughout the day. This is also important for preventing diabetes, hypothyroidism, and lifestyle diseases, so please try to eat mindfully at 80% fullness.
The second method is "don't eat sweets alone as a single food." This relates to the 80% fullness I mentioned earlier. You might think, "I'm tired, so I'll eat something sweet to get energy," imagining that fatigue will improve. While you might feel energetic momentarily, many people experience serious fatigue afterward.
I experience this too. Sometimes I can't eat breakfast and can't eat lunch either, then when evening comes I eat the sweets provided by staff thinking I'll replenish my blood sugar, and it rapidly spikes—and then I feel incredibly sluggish for about an hour. I think many of you have experienced this too.
When blood sugar spikes rapidly, in healthy people, insulin is released to bring it back down. These blood sugar fluctuations are very stressful on the body and lead to an easily fatigued body. Of course, carbohydrates are the brain's energy source, so eating carbohydrates isn't entirely bad. That's why eating sweets alone is the problem. When you want something sweet, try eating granola or dried sweet potato, which has sugar but also lots of dietary fiber. If you're constantly eating just chocolate or just sweet drinks, your blood sugar really fluctuates, making your body very prone to fatigue, so please be careful about this.
The third method is "to consciously eat foods with protein and vitamins." This is also about food, but when people eat out, they tend to have just pasta, bread, or a sandwich—basically just carbohydrates. This leads to the blood sugar fluctuations I mentioned, which really does make your body prone to fatigue. However, your body really needs protein and vitamins.
Protein in particular is the building block of muscle, and having strong muscles raises your metabolism and makes your body less prone to fatigue initially. If you don't have enough building materials, muscle fatigue recovery slows down. So you should definitely get enough protein. While there's meat and fish, it's also important to eat plant-based proteins like soybeans evenly. When people hear "eat protein," some only eat chicken or only eat beef, but it's very important to consume various types of protein. If you can't get enough from food, I think it's fine to also take protein consciously, but taking protein alone doesn't make you lose weight or immediately recover from fatigue. However, when protein is insufficient, recovery becomes problematic, so try to get protein from food, and if you can't, use supplements as support.
From the same perspective, vitamins are important too. When running your metabolism, vitamins are crucial. If you eat vegetables and other foods containing vitamins, your metabolism works better, making fatigue easier to recover from and harder to accumulate. The basics are getting these from food. Supplements exist to supplement vitamins you can't get from food, so rather than relying on supplements and health products for everything, try to focus first on getting protein and vitamins from your regular diet.
The fourth method is "to massage your lower body muscles thoroughly." This is my theory: we humans are subject to gravity, which makes blood tend to flow downward, so the lower body is particularly prone to coldness and swelling. Large muscles are concentrated in the lower body—your thigh muscles, gluteal muscles, and calf muscles. When muscles become supple, your overall metabolism increases.
When you commute by train or car a lot, you end up walking less. Actually, to become less prone to fatigue, light walking is better than intense exercise or strength training—walking with your lower body fully engaged, light enough that you can chat with someone next to you. However, if you can't do that, massaging your lower body muscles well or stretching is very important for making muscles supple. On days when you feel tired is especially important. If self-massage tires you out, use a massage device properly, letting it vibrate, stretching your calves, doing leg bends, or doing stair-stepping motions—even just that makes a big difference. I myself have a small massage device like this and massage my legs thoroughly, from my glutes to my feet, after bathing. The difference between days I do this and days I don't in terms of next-day fatigue is quite significant, so I think fatigue is eliminated by that day.
The fifth method is "don't let your body get cold." This is also something I do constantly, and I think it's truly important. The body naturally gets cold year-round—in summer there's coldness from air conditioning, and in winter the cold air outside makes your body contract and muscles stiffen. This reduces blood flow and easily leads to sluggishness, headaches, and general health problems.
So while I do love fashion and sometimes think light clothing or going barefoot would be nice, in those moments I'll bring a shawl or warm accessories to keep my body at a warm temperature constantly. Really, this significantly reduces fatigue.
You might think that's such a small thing, but maintaining body temperature is really important. Always bathe rather than just shower, take half-body baths to warm your body, or use saunas while properly hydrating. Keeping your body warm and maintaining good blood flow is what leads to fatigue recovery, so please try it.
To summarize: first, eat to 80% fullness. Second, avoid foods that rapidly raise blood sugar like pasta or eating sweets alone. Just these two things make blood sugar fluctuation much more stable. The fatigue you'd normally feel after eating or that general lack of energy that won't go away becomes completely flat.
Third, eat meals centered on protein and vitamins. Recovery when you feel tired becomes incredibly fast. The key is getting these from food, but if you lack them, try supplements. Fourth, work your large muscles—especially your lower body. The best is walking. Not intense weight training, but light exercise is best, so try to walk often, stand and walk every hour even if sitting, walk to the bathroom on purpose—do things like that. If you can't, there are massage devices now, so try using them for fatigue recovery.
And fifth, absolutely don't let your body get cold. When your body gets cold, you become sympathetic nervous system dominant, which worsens blood flow and paradoxically prevents sleep. Cold temperatures cause muscles to stiffen, creating pain that leads to fatigue, so please warm your body carefully.
So, how was that? None of this is magic—it's all completely ordinary stuff. However, even I, as someone in a profession where I can't really take days off no matter how busy the schedule, and as a mother, which is a 24/7, 365-day job with no breaks, find that when my own body feels bad, my performance drops. So I practice these small things consistently to avoid leaving fatigue accumulated and to not get sick, and I think that's the important thing. I hope this was helpful.
Thank you for watching until the end today. Especially as we near year-end, I know many of you are fatigued, so please watch this video, review your lifestyle habits, and build a body that doesn't get tired easily. See you in the next video. Goodbye.
