Transcript (English)
- Oh, doctor.
- Yes, what is it, Noburu-kun? What?
- I thought your switch just flipped on.
- I really want a Arata Tomori for the meeting room, you know.
- When you put on the white coat, you kind of switch into doctor mode, and it's like there's this feeling of "I have to be proper now," right?
- Let's stop that, please.
- I don't intend to act like that, you know.
- That's why it's interesting, that behind-the-scenes side.
- Behind-the-scenes. Stop that, come on.
- I'm not trying to be crude or anything. It's just interesting.
- So, what's up?
- I think it's been a hot topic in the SNS world, this skincare concentration issue.
- Ah, I get it.
- When a number is written, like some percentage, 25 or something, you want to buy it, right?
- That's true.
- This has been kind of a rumor in that circle for a while, but what's the actual truth?
- You know, I've always wanted to talk about this at some point, but I was thinking about how to say it without creating misunderstandings.
- First, as a problem, one thing is concentration.
- For example, you said earlier that if it says 25, you get curious, right? So if one says 25 and another says 15, then you'd go for the 25, right?
- Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
- Like, that one seems better, kind of?
- Yes, kind of, kind of.
- Thinking higher numbers are better is an illusion.
- An illusion?
- Another thing is, honestly, whether that percentage is really in there or not — I personally don't think all of them actually contain what they claim.
- Huh?
- I know this might make you feel a certain way about cosmetics, but I do think there are some kind of tricks used to create a positive misunderstanding, in a sense.
- Honestly, I never deal with that kind of thing myself. I try not to say it's "bad," though.
- True, there are people who it works well for, whose skin suits it.
- That part is fine.
- But let me say this from the start — please stop the misunderstanding that higher concentration is better.
- Why? Let's take Vitamin C as an example. It's said that around 5% or more is good.
- For quasi-drugs, that's roughly the standard, but nowadays you see things like 20% or 30% written everywhere, right?
- Vitamin C is great for the skin, but as the concentration increases, so does the irritation.
- Ah, I see.
- So even if you want to tighten your pores and think you want to use a high concentration of Vitamin C, if your skin type is dry or combination, it might sting or cause irritation.
- So the percentage that suits that person is what matters — for some, 20% is better, for others, 5% is better. It's not necessarily true that higher is always necessary. And this isn't just about Vitamin C — it applies to all ingredients.
- By the way, how can you tell what percentage suits you?
- First, whether there's irritation or not.
- From using it yourself?
- Yes, exactly. The higher the concentration, the more irritation there tends to be.
- So it's bad if there's irritation?
- Yes, it's bad. Even if it's stated on the package that a slight tingling is normal, I still wouldn't really recommend it.
- Like thinking that the stinging feeling means it's working?
- That's you with your Showa-era "try hard and it'll pay off" mentality.
- Heisei it, Heisei it.
- Oh, Heisei? That's absolutely not okay.
- Like with Retinol, for example, if your skin peels, you can't keep using it long term.
- You think you're doing good for your skin, but it turns into irritation and causes inflammation instead.
- The appropriate concentration depends on the ingredient and also on the person, so let's throw away the illusion that "higher is better."
- Also, there's the matter of combinations.
- Combinations?
- Right. For example, Vitamin C and Niacinamide go well together.
- But if both are put in at 20% each, you can imagine they might "clash," right?
- There's an overall balance of combinations to consider, so really, you shouldn't just watch people explaining ingredients on YouTube.
- Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- I mean, don't get fooled by that.
- Ingredients are important.
- Especially you — you're all about ingredients.
- They're important, but not everything.
- First of all, cosmetics are meant to make you feel good and lift your mood when you use them.
- If it causes tingling, redness, or a smell you dislike, that's not good — but it's also not true that a product is bad just because a certain ingredient isn't in it.
- Because it's about combination, so that kind of misunderstanding is a shame.
- There's another issue too.
- Issue?
- Isn't it easier to choose if the percentage is written as a rough guide?
- So it'd be fine if everyone understood that higher isn't necessarily better, but the trend right now is that higher is seen as better.
- So when packages deliberately write things like 20% or whatever percentage, I find that a bit distasteful.
- Another thing is, I don't think all of them actually contain what's stated — of course many probably do, but some make you wonder.
- For example, with Vitamin C, is it pure Vitamin C or a Vitamin C derivative? With Retinol, is it pure Retinol or a Retinol derivative? Recently, with Azelaic acid too, is it pure Azelaic acid or an Azelaic acid derivative? The percentage means something completely different depending on that.
- I think just writing the percentage alone is questionable. For instance, even 0.1% of pure Retinol is impressive.
- But if a Retinol derivative says 1%, it might feel like that's better, right?
- So how much percentage of the ingredient you think it is is actually there — that's kind of iffy.
- Difficult, difficult.
- It is difficult. So, you know.
- I don't get it.
- Right, you wouldn't.
- So even if it says 20%, the actual amount of the ingredient present and how it affects the skin aren't necessarily equal, right?
- Not equal.
- And that doesn't mean the product itself is bad, right?
- It's not bad. Because even if you misunderstood something, that's on you, but if it works as a cosmetic product — not just because of one ingredient, but because of the combination — then that's perfectly fine.
- Right, so it'd be a waste to stop using something good just because you saw some information saying it might not be right.
- But because of that risk, manufacturers should avoid doing things that could cause misunderstanding.
- If I were to make cosmetics, I'd write it properly — pure ingredient, and the actual percentage, if I really believed in it.
- I see.
- People tend to over-trust cosmetics in a way.
- That's true.
- Like it's medicine.
- Like everything can be solved with it.
- I think that's a bit much, so for Noburu-kun and everyone watching, first, writing the concentration doesn't automatically make it good. And not containing something doesn't mean it's meaningless either — how it's included changes things. Like for whitening, it's better if the active whitening ingredient is included — that can be a guideline, but ultimately, it's about how it works for you personally.
- I see, that makes sense. If it works well for you, that's what matters. If it doesn't suit you, you should try something else, right?
- Exactly, exactly. People want quick results.
- Even within a week or so.
- A week or so.
- Right, right.
- Skin doesn't change that fast in a week.
- I've learned something today.
- You should. Also, combining it with cosmetic treatments is a must — proper skincare plus cosmetic treatments. Even I love Retinol and Vitamin C, and I use them, but sometimes, when using them every day, I feel a slight tingling. When that happens, I stop everything for about a week, and just use toner and cream.
- And surprisingly, my skin condition improves.
- I see.
- So overdoing it is a real risk — you should be careful. Especially people who are into skincare should watch out for this.
- I see.
- I'll be careful myself too, even as I'm talking about it.
- I see.
- There are so many good cosmetics out there, so many good cases, that I want to use them all too.
- Yeah, true.
- But sometimes I mess up too.
- To a large audience, huh.
- Yeah, to quite a large audience — but I do slip up sometimes too. So it's not just about percentage, and not just about ingredients — there's also this misleading aspect, so I think it's important to build proper knowledge.
- I see.
- Got it?
- Got it?
- I understood it.
- Yeah, I got it. But still, when you look at the ingredients and don't understand them, that's why people watch your videos, right, doctor?
- There's no single correct answer — what feels right when you use it is the answer. No one else can tell you the right answer.
- I see, I see.
- So everyone, please be careful.
- I understood so well, doctor. Earlier you said if it were you, you'd write all the ingredients — was that a setup for something?
- No, no, no, no, I have no such plan.
- Tomori, is this the skincare line you made seriously?
- The skincare I made seriously.
- I've already decided the name, though.
- Oh, you've already decided the name?
- I've decided the name, but this isn't a setup, it's not a setup. If I say more, people will start saying "Dr. Tomori."
- True.
- Like, "Oh, are you making one?"
- Since I don't have my own research lab, I have respect for that field — ingredients are important, but original formulation is also very important.
- True, having a research lab really matters.
- I'll continue to introduce that kind of thing on my channel from now on, so I hope you'll enjoy watching.
- Well, thank you very much, Noburu-kun, for today.
- Thank you very much.
- Come again.
- Got it.
