Hello everyone! This is Yui Tomori, a dermatologist. Today, I'd like to talk about all-in-one skincare products, which many of you have requested. Often during live streams, people say, 'Doctor, you introduce so many skincare products, but I don't have time to do all that—can I just use an all-in-one?' Well, to answer that upfront: yes, of course an all-in-one alone is perfectly fine. That's because all-in-one products are specifically formulated to be sufficient on their own. When they were first developed, they were actually quite groundbreaking. I believe Dr. Ci:Labo was the first to coin the term 'all-in-one.' Dr. Ci:Labo was developed by a dermatologist named Dr. Shirano, with the concept that after laser treatments, applying multiple products like toner and lotion could cause irritation, so a single product would suffice.
So the advantage of all-in-one cosmetics is this: for those who don't want the irritation that comes from using many different products, or of course for convenience and simplicity—but also for people whose skin has gotten tired from doing too much, or those who are lost in their skincare routine, an all-in-one can be a good way to pause and simplify. That's my own view. So when choosing an all-in-one, since you're relying on just one product for convenience, I think it's best to choose based on your skin type or specific concerns. With that in mind, today I'd like to introduce three notable options.
Let's start with the first one. This is a product I previously introduced when discussing affordable whitening options. This all-in-one contains ingredients that stand out for those who really want to focus on brightening. First is tranexamic acid. Tranexamic acid has anti-inflammatory properties, and it suppresses the melanocytes' production of melanin when exposed to UV rays. Additionally, tranexamic acid is known to help suppress melasma, a specific type of skin discoloration. So if you're concerned about UV exposure, or if wearing masks has led to melasma concerns, or if you already have melasma, this ingredient is worth paying attention to. It also contains proper moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid and trehalose. So this is a product that combines solid moisturizing with notable whitening ingredients, even in an all-in-one format.
Next up is this one: Hada Labo Gokujun Hyaluron Jurée. Hada Labo also has this type of all-in-one product. I was surprised to see it at the drugstore. It contains plenty of the hyaluronic acid that's originally used in Hada Labo's home-use lineup. What kind of hyaluronic acid is it? It includes nano-sized hyaluronic acid that penetrates easily, as well as hyaluronic acid that forms a film on the skin. So it can properly penetrate into the stratum corneum while also serving as both a toner and cream substitute for hyaluronic acid. Another feature is the encapsulation technology, where hyaluronic acid is encapsulated in oil. Why is this significant? Well, skin naturally has sebum on its surface, and oil-based substances penetrate more easily. Since oil repels water, water-soluble substances are made more oil-like to help them penetrate. By encapsulating hyaluronic acid in oil capsules this way, it can penetrate deeply into the stratum corneum.
For those who want to focus mainly on moisturizing, this product incorporates hyaluronic acid in various forms, so it's definitely worth paying attention to. I'd also like to touch on glycerin, which has been a hot topic on social media lately. Moisturizing products always contain glycerin, and recently there's been talk on social media that glycerin might cause acne, leading to many glycerin-free products hitting the market. Of course, glycerin is originally a substance naturally found in the skin, and when broken down, it can become food for acne bacteria. Since it's naturally present, does this mean it worsens acne? There are some reports suggesting this, but there's no research proving it directly causes acne. However, for people who already have a lot of acne or a lot of acne bacteria, products containing glycerin might potentially worsen their acne—the possibility isn't zero. Given this, the Gokujun series is really meant for people with dry skin or skin texture issues caused by dryness, so if you're worried about acne, you might want to avoid this type of product. Personally, I don't worry too much about glycerin as an ingredient, but some people have found their acne improved after switching to glycerin-free products, so if you're concerned, it's fine to avoid it. That said, for the Gokujun series and other products with a lot of glycerin, since glycerin is fundamentally a moisturizing ingredient, I think those products just aren't a good match for people with those concerns in the first place. Since glycerin is the main moisturizing ingredient in this product, I wanted to touch on that topic.
Another thing I liked about this Hada Labo product, unrelated to ingredients, is the form factor—isn't it great? It comes in a pump type, so pressing the pump dispenses a jelly-like product. With all-in-ones, including Chifure products, jar-type containers are quite common. I don't dislike jars—if you use a spatula, it stays hygienic—but using a spatula can be a bit of a hassle. Since this one is pump-type, that's reassuring, and that's another reason I wanted to introduce this one to you all.
Next is this one. This is actually also a pump type. It's shaped like this, but it says 'limited edition pump type,' so I think the regular version probably comes in a jar. It might be a limited edition or perhaps just happened to be this way, so some of you may not find this pump version available, but I do think pump types are better. This one is labeled as a whitening all-in-one gel, so it contains a notable whitening ingredient: arbutin. Arbutin has long been famous as a whitening ingredient, and it also works by suppressing melanocytes' melanin production. In addition to this trusted long-standing ingredient, this product features a unique soy milk fermentation liquid as a moisturizing ingredient—you could call it their secret sauce, so to speak—which seems to provide quite strong moisturizing power. Since arbutin has relatively low irritation potential, this could be a good choice for whitening as well.
This product also contains dipotassium glycyrrhizinate, an ingredient that helps prevent skin irritation. For example, people prone to acne or those with skin irritation can benefit from glycyrrhizinate's ability to suppress inflammation. So while glycyrrhizinate alone might not be enough for active acne breakouts, for those who are prone to acne and struggling with acne scars, arbutin's whitening effect might help improve those scars somewhat—the possibility isn't zero. So if you want whitening effects while also being concerned about acne, acne scar redness, or mask-related skin irritation, this is a product worth paying attention to.
All-in-one cosmetics might give the impression of being a shortcut or lazy option, but if you properly understand the ingredients and choose wisely, they can actually be wonderful products that do everything you need in just one step. So please try finding the all-in-one that's right for you.
