Hello everyone, this is Tomomi. This year, the flu is really going around, isn't it? At my kids' school, I've been hearing about class closures here and there too. There's no way to prevent illness 100%, but along with things like handwashing, masks, and vaccinations, I thought it would be great if there were something we could take regularly to help with prevention—so today I want to talk about Manuka honey. I'm sure many of you have heard at least once that Manuka honey is good for cold prevention, but a lot of people probably wonder, "Is that actually true?" So today, from a doctor's perspective, I'd like to explain in what ways it can actually help with prevention. If you want to prevent the flu or colds, please watch until the end. First, some of you may be wondering what Manuka honey actually is. Simply put, it's a type of honey. However, it specifically refers to honey made from the flowers of the Manuka tree, a type of myrtle that grows only in New Zealand. The Manuka tree itself has records showing that indigenous people used its bark and sap medicinally. Because of this, it's long been thought that the tree itself might have some kind of beneficial effect, and recently it's become known that the nectar from its flowers also has various properties. The biggest discovery came in 2006, when it was found that Manuka honey has powerful antibacterial properties. It's said that around this time, Manuka honey began to be widely used in medical settings in Oceania and Europe. The key to its effectiveness is a unique compound found only in Manuka honey among all types of honey: methylglyoxal. Regular honey has long been said to have antibacterial properties too, mainly due to a compound called gluconic acid. While gluconic acid does have antibacterial and disinfectant properties, when regular honey is eaten, the gluconic acid gets broken down by enzymes in the body, so its effects can't really be expected. For example, when honey's benefits are discussed in the context of beauty, it's usually about gluconic acid or amino acids, which may work when applied topically but typically have no effect when ingested. However, it's been found that the methylglyoxal in Manuka honey doesn't get broken down even when consumed, and it reliably provides antibacterial and disinfectant effects in the body. So while regular honey is good, Manuka honey is the best choice. The methylglyoxal in Manuka honey is said to inhibit the growth of pathogens and viruses. It doesn't necessarily remove viruses that have already multiplied, but since we inevitably take in small amounts of viruses and bacteria into our bodies, preventing them from multiplying is just as important as preventing them from entering in the first place. In this regard, the methylglyoxal in Manuka honey is thought to play a helpful role in preventing infections. In addition, Manuka honey contains B vitamins such as B1, B2, B12, and niacin, minerals like calcium and phosphorus, and abundant amino acids—so just by taking a spoonful, you can also get nutritional benefits. It's also said to promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, helping to balance the gut environment. Since a healthy gut environment has recently been linked to improved immune function, this growth-promoting effect may also contribute to infection prevention by helping regulate our immune balance. There are also some papers suggesting Manuka honey may be effective against H. pylori, the bacteria linked to stomach cancer. If you have stomach issues or are concerned about H. pylori (I actually had it treated myself), it might be worth trying. Manuka honey is definitely something worth incorporating into your diet during this season, but it's important to choose the right one. The key indicator to look for is "MGO." This refers to the amount of methylglyoxal—the compound I mentioned earlier—contained per 1kg of Manuka honey. The higher the number, the more methylglyoxal the honey contains. An MGO of around 300 to 500 is generally fine, but if you want more solid infection-prevention benefits, I'd recommend something higher than that. I've seen some YouTube videos claiming that eating Manuka honey with high methylglyoxal content every day can actually lower your immunity or harm your gut bacteria. However, methylglyoxal isn't an antibacterial drug, so it doesn't disrupt gut bacteria. In fact, there are solid papers showing that honey with higher MGO levels is actually better for gut bacteria. So based on my own research, I don't think there's any harm in eating high-MGO honey daily, and I'd encourage you to incorporate it into your routine. As for how and when to eat Manuka honey, since it's not medicine, there's no strict requirement. That said, I think about one teaspoon in the morning and one in the evening is a good amount. Just be careful not to overdo it, since it does contain sugar. Also, since it's honey, it should not be given to babies under 1 year old. If you want to give it to your children, please wait until they're at least 1 year old. In my house, I have kids aged 4, 7, and 9, and I give each of them a teaspoon of Manuka honey morning and evening. Thankfully, everyone in my family stays healthy. The one I personally eat is a brand I've introduced on YouTube before. That video ended up getting a lot of views, which led to me being approached and now working as a kind of ambassador for this Manuka honey brand—it's called "Strong Manuka Honey," and I eat the MGO 1050+ version. The packaging has actually changed since I first introduced it—it's now easier to hold and has a cuter design. It is a bit pricey, but it's delicious, and for the sake of my family's health, I've been eating it for about 5 years now. Besides the MGO 1050 version, they also offer more affordable options like MGO 860, 550, and 220, so if you're interested, please check out Strong Manuka Honey. So today, I talked about Manuka honey, which has been gaining attention for its potential to help prevent the flu and other infections. As we head into a season with many infectious illnesses going around, let's all make sure to wash our hands, gargle, avoid overexertion, eat well, and stay healthy. Thank you so much for watching until the end today. See you in the next video—goodbye!
